John and Jane Smith just received a new mission: Prime Video has renewed the spy thriller Mr. & Mrs. Smith for Season 2, TVLine has learned. But John and Jane’s identity may be changing, with our sister site Variety reporting that Season 1 stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine may not return for the sophomore run. If so, the series could become an anthology and follow a new spy couple in Season 2. (TVLine has reached out to Prime Video for comment.)
“We are excited to announce that a second season of our groundbreaking spy series, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, is in the works for our global Prime Video customers,” Amazon MGM Studios head Jennifer Salke said in a statement. “The success of the first season, with its incredibly modern, sexy reinvention of the original film, is a testament to the brilliant creators Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane. We are proud to bring you another season filled with unforgettable journeys and new adventures.”
Glover, who also co-created the series with showrunner Francesca Sloane, starred as John Smith, an international spy who’s paired up with fellow spy Jane (Erskine) to pose as a married couple. The pair were sent out on death-defying missions together while slowly developing real feelings for one another. The first season ended on a deadly cliffhanger, with John clinging to life as he and Jane hid from a murderous pair of spies in their townhouse’s panic room. (Read our full finale recap here.)
Mr. & Mrs. Smith’s eight-episode freshman season debuted in February, with Glover and Erskine joined by a parade of guest stars including Sarah Paulson, Alexander Skarsgard and John Turturro. It ranked second on Nielsen’s chart of the most-streamed original series in its first week of availability, with 964 million minutes viewed.

🤷♂️
One important piece you left out of the article is the Glover and Erskine aren’t returning to star in the 2nd season
Wut?
Aren’t confirmed to return is different than not returning.
Having said that, Glover is a good creator. I can see a second season being about a different pair of Smiths with maybe some splicing in of S1 Smiths. Or, they hold out for S3.
Be a shame not having the S1 Smiths on screen though. They could easily turn to investigating who Hihi is.
They killed the cat in the first season.
Screw this show and all involved with it.
Hard pass. Meow
Why the renewal? It was unwatchable.
Because enough people watched it to make it worthwhile. That’s how TV works.
I don’t understand the hate. I really enjoyed this show. It was different and interesting with great performances in my opinion.
Agreed, it’s been one of my favourite shows of the year so far. Excited for more, but it will depend hugely on casting if Glover and Erskine don’t return.
Awesome! Should have been renewed so much sooner! Would love to see them with Ron Perlman’s Toby character again.
I’m fine with another pair, as long as there’s some resolution for the cliffhanger (either an ep where the new Smiths run into the old Smiths, don’t even have to actually meet, like maybe they’re sitting in a cafe watching the new ones run past or something, and we get a scene of “How’s your arm?” “Doing much better today.”, or old Jane shows up with a “Treasure what you have, and don’t trust your handler, and if you screw up, RUN.” warning
I really liked Mr. & Mrs. Smith. However, I hate the fact Amazon loves to play around with it’s viewers emotions. We pay you to have the privilege of watching these shows. Examples: The Baxters, absolutely top list of favorites. But have they decided on a season 4? Maybe we should all get together and drop, Amazon prime video, Netflix, Paramount. It make me cry even saying this because you guys made excellent movies. But we have expectations from you too. Easy. GET THE MOVIES MADE, AND ON TIME, AND WITH ORIGINAL MEMBERS. DONT USE THE STRIKE AS AN ISSUE. WE DON’T BUY IT.
