The original NCIS team almost looked quite different.
In a very fun THR.com oral history that marks the well-watched JAG offshoot’s 20th anniversary, assorted NCIS vets let loose about who else had been eyeballed back in the day for the roles of Leroy Jethro Gibbs, Caitlin Todd and Ducky.
Harrison Ford — who at that point in his film career was between What Lies Beneath and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Csyrtal Skull — “was a name that everybody thought about for Gibbs because he was so perfect,” says Charles Floyd Johnson, who was an EP on JAG at the time that NCIS’ double-episode backdoor pilot was being cast. “But I don’t think it ever got further than; it was [just] a name thrown out.”
Scott Glenn, who also was working steadily in film at the time NCIS took shape, “was considered very strongly” for the role of Gibbs, says Johnson, and Andrew McCarthy was “at one point was in the mix” (and met with NCIS co-creator Don Bellisario to discuss the role). But for casting director Susan Bluestein, “Mark [Harmon] had been on my NCIS list from Day 1. I always felt like Mark really had the gravitas for this character.”
One great meeting between Harmon and Bellisario later, NCIS had its Gibbs!
Robyn Lively played NCIS Special Agent Vivian Blackadder in the two-part pilot, but The Powers That Be “didn’t think she quite worked,” Johnson tells THR. Before Sasha Alexander waseventually tapped to join the cast as Caitlin Todd, the name of none other than Jennifer Aniston — whose Friends run was winding down –“was floated” for the new role, says Johnson.
Other fun casting facts from THR.com’s NCIS oral history, which really must be read on full at your leisure:
◆ The studio initially balked at The Man From U.N.C.L.E.’s David McCallum, an “old character actor” (in their words), playing Ducky, but “Don [Bellisario] said, ‘If you don’t, we’re not doing the show.'” (Fun fact-within-a-fact: the aforementioned Scott Glenn was also eyed to play Ducky.)
◆ Cote de Pablo “was a home run” when brought in to read for the Season 3 addition of Ziva David. “I remember she walked in the room and we all were like, ‘Oh, my God, who is this woman?’ Which doesn’t happen now that much at network tests,” says former CBS casting chief Peter Golden. But as such, “When Cote left, literally there was a ripple in the universe,” recalls former CBS entertainment chief Nina Tassler.
◆ Regarding Pauley Perrette’s kind-of-abrupt exit from the role of Abby after 15 seasons, Johnson confirms that “an incident” with a dog that Mark Harmon would bring to set, and which allegedly bit someone(s), was the catalyst. After lodging complaints, “By the end of that year, [Pauley] just felt like it wasn’t working for her anymore, and it was time to move on.”
This is really cool stuff!
The thought that 20 years ago they could have landed Harrison Ford or Jennifer Aniston to do a procedural is laughable. Aniston already had a film career and Ford had a string of hits in the 90s and was not that over the hill to take a TV gig back then. Remember, 20 years ago, doing TV meant your film career was basically over.
It’s ironic that Mark Harmon’s career was saved by this show since he too was a film actor at one point.
I know I’ve read elsewhere (maybe here) that Katee Sackhoff was up for the role of Abby Sciuto. That would have been different. Looking forward to reading the article in THR.

The oral history says that some had trouble seeing Pauley as a lab rat.
I’m so glad casting really did their job. The show is a hit I still watch it on cable. It’s one of the best shows on TV never.
IMO Bishop (Emily Wickersham) was better than Sasha Alexander or Cote de Pablo.
I rank them Cote, Emily and Sasha.

Maura Isles seems like she was a better fit for Sasha than Kate was. Not that Caitlin Todd was all that bad of a character, but I think Sasha really shined as Maura.
I loved Sasha on Rizzoli & Isles, just not so much on NCIS.
Harrison Ford wouldn’t have been right at all as Gibbs. I’m glad they went with Harmon.
Hard to believe Robyn Lively wasn’t “a match” for the part. I can easily see her on the show. Have always loved her acting. Yikes on the Perrette/dog item. That is a really tough situation, if true. However, Diona Reasonover has been a fantastic addition to the show. The NCIS powers-that-be really know how to cast!
Cote was awesome! Emily was excellent. Katrina Law just doesn’t fit right! She needs to be GONE!
I agree about Cote, what an introduction to her character too! I actually like Katrina’s role and acting more than Emily’s. Maybe it’s because I enjoyed seeing her in Hawaii 5 0.
I’ve never liked Katrina in her Hallmark movies, but don’t mind her in this.
Katrina is probably the best addition to the show since Cote. She’s filled the comedy void that was created when Michael Weatherly left and breathed new life into this show. She’s a fantastic actress and it’s shown in the ratings that went up after she joined.
Ha! There’s nothing special about Knight at all everything about her is from a female agent before her. Sassy smart ass with a big heart that was Kate, being an experienced fighter was Ziva’s schtick, dating Jimmy direct page from the Michelle Lee playbook, lost her team tragically Paula Cassidy did it first and better. Also comedy the only thing funny about Knight is how a supposed negotiator can’t handle kids. Bishop knew how to handle kids and she was more of a natural without the special negotiating skills Knight seems to never shut up about.
This is going to be long as hell and I regret nothing about it:
No secret Harrison Ford was almost tapped to be Gibbs the first official episode if the show made a lot of not so subtle jokes about it.
Jennifer Anniston outside of Friends I’m not familiar with her work so anyone’s guess if she could play a tough as nails yet empathetic fed like Sasha did with Kate. Something that I miss Kate could handle herself in danger but she knew how to connect with people.
The Ziva years were a mix for me by season 8 I got sick of how she seemed to conveniently know so much it made the role of everyone else on the team seem useless. Her family drama was unhealthy.
Bishop was different until her final season. If Ziva was Black Widow then Bishop was more like Hawkeye the character you don’t expect much from but when push comes to shove steps up. I see what they were trying to do having two agents with back story in another agency and covert ops Bishop was a fresh green probie that was moulded from the start I did like how she had the same sense of heart that Kate did and hated how in the end like Ziva did Tony she left Torres high and dry after stringing him along.
And Knight I really wanted to like her as Katrina Law was in so many of my favorite shows from Spartacus to Arrow and even the short lived Training Day show. Problem is Knight has no discernible traits of her own she’s so far a mix of her predecessors. Like Kate she’s a smart mouth, like Ziva she has a fighter, and like Bishop she has a somewhat well normal backstory better than Ziva’s family of deceased or corrupt official parents and psychopath siblings. You can also add Michelle Lee since she’s dating Jimmy and Paula Cassidy since she lost her previous team. Hard to make a charter their own with that much in common with those before.
Tony I liked the early seasons where despite his behavior he had a sense of creative thinking he knew to look for solutions outside the box but he became flanderized to being nothing but an overgrown frat boy. Him leaving to be a father to his daughter was the best exit for him.
Torres is the opposite he’s like Tony in someways just with more grit he’d rather straight up punch you in the face than run his mouth. Since Bishop left he’s gotten worse so I can take or leave him at this point. Especially after last season finale.
McGee remains the most consistent written character that got development yet never seemed to lost who he was. Compare the awkward Probie of seasons 1 and 2 to a responsible family man that still has quirks like gaming and reading comics.
I like Parker only because he is Gibbs polar opposite. Gibbs was a loner while Parker is the guy who will buy you drinks after work.
I do not like Parker at all! NCIS is nothing without Mark Harmon❣️ I only watch the older ones with Mark Harmon❣️ Lose Parker & bring back Gibbs❣️❣️❣️
So what you get happiness by telling others that like characters why their wrong for doing so? Are you that vitriolic and petty? And kind of hard to bring back Gibbs when Harmon himself has retired from acting.
The problem I have, with any show, is when they stay too long. When the main characters leave, call it quits. It should never have gone on past Cote leaving.
ctfu. You make it sound like the show hinged on her alone. It didn’t it hinged on Gibbs, Tony, Abby and Ducky who were there since they guests Jag episodes. You want to say you like the years with your favorite but don’t be a buzzkill to think it was solely because of Ms. ‘I can kill you with paper clips and done everything that makes a team beneath me.
harmon’s gig on ‘west wing’ was dry run for gibbs
Except for a brief mention of his character, no stories about the actor who has actually appeared in more episodes than anyone, Sean Murray. It would be odd if no one else was considered for the character.
Sean Murray is the universal “everyman” that no one dislikes. An ideal supporting actor. JMO
Sean Murray is Bellisario family, i doubt anyone else was considered.
NCIS has had a mixed bag of actors that I really liked or really couldn’t stand. The plus side included Laura. San Giacomo(sp), Pam Dawber and Emily W.. The negatives included Lauren Holly, Rena Sofer and Jamie Lee Curtis. I know lots of viewers loved Tony DiNozzo, but to me he was a sophomoric prat.
