Following the surprising news that NCIS: Hawai’i will not be returning for Season 4, CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach has spoken about the network’s decision to cancel the Vanessa Lachey-led procedural.
“It is incumbent on us to always keep the schedule fresh, keep momentum going. We had to make some really tough choices this year,” Reisenbach said, according to Variety. “Everything came back [from the Hollywood strikes] really strong, but ultimately we have to look at the cohesiveness of the schedule flow. We have to evaluate the financials and the performance overall, and we make tough decisions.”
Reisenbach said that there was no chance of an “un-cancellation,” as S.W.A.T. (twice) received, while TVLine hears that the series is not being shopped elsewhere.
NCIS: Hawai’i will air Part 2 of its Season 3, now series, finale this Monday, May 6 at 10/9c.
Season-to-date, the island drama has been averaging 7.8 million total viewers and a 0.5 demo rating (with Live+7 playback data), up 4% in viewers vs. Season 2 but down a tick in the demo. Out of the 14 drama series that CBS has aired this TV season, it ranks No. 6 in total audience (behind Tracker, NCIS, FBI, Blue Bloods and The Equalizer) and eighth in the demo.
Reisenbach also said that CBS has no plans to renew the long-running Blue Bloods beyond the current Season 14, despite cast members (Tom Selleck included) lobbying for at least a longer farewell run. Rather, following its upcoming May 17 finale, the family/cop drama will return with the second half of its final season in October, and wrap with a series finale at the end of the year.
“We love this cast, we love their passion for the show. All shows have to come to an end. It’s important to us to refresh the schedule,” Reisenbach noted, per Deadline. “We are going to end the show come December.”
How are you feeling about the NCIS: Hawai’i and Blue Bloods cancellations?
I knew Blue Bloods wouldn’t go beyond this next season, but CBS really should have given them more episodes to go over 300. NCIS: Sydney will do terrible and won’t see a season 3 that airs on CBS anyway.
NCIS S will air on CBS. It’ll air in the summer as a throwaway, basically free after the costs are born by the Aussie outlet.
Don’t waste your time or money. I didn’t like it when it came on the 1st time a L0nd I will not waste my time if you bring it back. I was upset when you ended NCIS: LA and thought well I still have the other NCIS shows. I am not happy about you ending NCIS: HAWAII I will still watch NCIS, and after that I’m sure ABC & NBC will have shows worth watching.
They can air NCIS S in the summer all they want, it’s not going to make it. Summer is the worse time to start a new show. People watch less tv in the summer months than any other ssason. Fall & winter people are home more. Summer months, if I am home, I am looking to watch reruns of shows I may have missed, not new shows.
I am amused at why everyone mentions NCIS: Sydney as a problem for CBS. It was never meant to air on CBS as it was funded primarily by Australian Channel 10 and Paramount+ for the Australian market. And guess what. We liked it. If it wasn’t for the Writers strike Americans probably would have never seen it.
Correct. Although I think it was always suppose to air here, but only on Paramount+ not on broadcast CBS. The strike changed it to both and a Fall 23 release. People can want Sydney cancelled all they want. Wouldn’t changed what happened or change it now. I really liked Hawaii and will miss it, but I can’t blame Sydney for it.
I am not an NCIS: Hawaii fan. See my original comment, as a Blue Bloods fan Sydney did not deserve to have season 2 aired on CBS at BB’s expense of going over the milestone 300 episodes. NCIS: Sydney was about the lowest rated returning show that aired on CBS in the 2023-2024 season, will go even lower moving to Fridays.
I saw the NCIS: Sydney pilot. It was bloody awful.
You can’t rate anything on just the pilot. It took three or four episodes for me to get into it because of the US actors lording it over the locals, but after that I really started to enjoy it and was really upset it finished after only eight episodes. But then I’m British
Enough of their home town crowd liked it, so solution Ben DONT EATCH IT
People mention it because it now takes up one CBS primtime slot that as you said it was never meant to prior to the strikes. Which means, in theory, one of the already established American made shows potentially lost said prime time slot to a show that isn’t well liked here and wasn’t (allegedly) meant for our broadcast channel.
Still mostly produced by Aussie’s so it’s super cheap and has a limited episode count that won’t really take space that will matter.
The fact that it is cheap and not produced by any American company is the reason CBS is choosing to give it a time slot that could have gone to one of the shows they canceled. It’s a shrewd business move but a sh!tty one for fans. It absolutely *does* matter. Sad you can’t comprehend that.
Pffft, with the episode count they could have tagged it with Hawaii before it started and have Hawaii start a bit later or lower its episode count. I still think if Sydney was cancelled BB and Hawaii would still have the same fate.
Also if it was cancelled by CBS it would still be made for Australia and Paramount as their overlord could air anytime they wanted in the future in the US.
Yeah, as Tim says, even 2x 13 ep seasons, one in Sydney and one in Hawaii would work for ‘the flow of the schedule’.
Problem is that that sends the cost per episode of the Hawai’i shoot up, because the season costs like flying people and stuff over at the start and back at the end, set and equipment maintenance etc. only get shared between 13 eps not 22, so it’s not as much of a saving as it would be if the cost was proportionally reduced.
I saw a few people suggesting if they could have kept Magnum PI or Hawaii Five-0 going long enough that would have helped defray the infrastructure costs as they could have been shared between multiple shows, but those shows had their own behind the scenes equations against them as well.
Hawai’i has been my favourite NCIS show since I picked it up but I can’t think of anything else that would make it cheaper that wouldn’t end up costing more money – it would be even more expensive to share resources with Sydney if they brought that into the fold, putting another show there is a whole ‘nother show, investing in local production New Zealand style is money out that doesn’t necessarily come back, and it couldn’t be shot anywhere else and have it pretend to be Hawai’i now that they’ve established the visual language of the show and leaned on the locale and culture so much, it would be truly a disservice to Hawai’i and there’s really no way they can dress Vancouver up to match anything they’ve shot outdoors so far even if they could take the indoor sets with them.
It would delight me very much if they could just find+replace the Sydney cast with the Hawai’i cast, but I suspect that none of the characters would actually voluntarily leave Hawai’i even if the cast were on board with moving to Sydney (which I personally do not recommend anyone do unless they absolutely have no other choice).
I love NCIS: Sydney and I am an American! I’ve always wanted to visit Sydney, but have not yet had the chance to do so. I love the English language differences and appreciate the jokes.
I HATE that CBS is ending both shows. It’s in such bad form to end NCIS Hawaii without a proper send off. Instead, we will all be left to a cliff hanger we will never know the outcome of! Shame on you CBS.
Still a dumb idea to cancel Blue Bloods, NCIS: Hawaii, CSI: Vegas and So Help Me Todd with shows they likely will be canceled in short order.
-With Blue Bloods, it feels like a big cost cutting move and them eventually clearing the way for the Fire Country spinoff. They both feel like a lesser version of Chicago Fire/PD with a tad too much soapy drama and unbelievable storylines.
-Even with Origins being about a young Gibbs, prequels are kind of hit-or-miss in their appeal and instead of continuing to push the NCIS franchise forward, it kind stunts its potential and future. I’m not sure how much NCIS: Sydney will help with how few episodes they’ll make and if it can replicate its ratings as filler during the dual strikes.
-I don’t think they’ve set up the Watson show well by sticking an unknown show on Sundays at 10 PM in the spring.
-I don’t believe that the rebooted Matlock is the kind of show to refresh/renew their schedule.
I generally agree with your points. But I get CBS’s thinking, even if I don’t fully agree it will come to pass. CBS LOVES its FBI Tuesdays and NCIS Mondays. They want Fire Country Fridays, and eventually Tracker Sundays. All branded content that they hope fans will tune in for on that day.
.
NCIS HI was just too expensive, and the cast/themes just didn’t mesh with NCIS’s core fan base. The core fans of that show love the idea of an older cop who doesn’t rely on fancy science, but uses his gut (which science backs up), and doesn’t play nice wrt to rules. And an earlier set show about Gibbs lets them ignore science a little, and show some he-man stud who operates on gut feelings and “does whatever it takes to get the job done.” I longed for an ep or two when Gibb’s gut was dead wrong and he had to apologize for a mistake, but he was infallible, and that was what he audience loved, and what the new show will lean on.
.
I agree about Matlock. I don’t think it will work, but they are all in at this point.
.
WRT Todd, again, not one of the actors seems all that upset. I feel like something BTS just didn’t click. An hour long show like this was likely far more work than either of the big stars wanted or expected. I think they made out pretty well for two years, and are OK with doing something new.
What themes were opposed by NCIS fans, thats ludicrous, yes it became the only reason to have production crews living in Hawaii, and that by itself sank it, bit every show, maintained the audience from the lead in from mothership
I disagree but we get to do that. I loved So Help Me Todd and so did all my friends. It was a fun, fresh new kind of show with some new kinds of issue moments. Great actors and fun twists and turns. I am sick of their making weird shows and declaring them the best new show.. Tracker is good.. different. Fire country is boring and can’t stand it. Loved Magnum and Hawaii 50. Hated it when they got canceled. Frustrating to see great shows get canceled and then stupid ones started up.. and don’t last. CBS is really lacking a good schedule. Some of the same over and over.
Actually, I’d rather have a Blue Bloods origins show – back when Frank and Lenny rode the streets and Henry was PC.
I would much rather have a Young Frank show for 2025 than another stupid show from Fire Country.
Can’t stand to watch fire country
I love Fire Country 🔥!
Good show!
I was never interested in NCIS: Hawaii. But I am looking forward to NCIS: Origins. Prequel Young Sheldon did really well taking over as their ace comedy from TBBT.
No hardcore fans wish to see another rendition of how Gibbs came to be, we were fed his story bit by antagonizing bit for 20 years, and he changed it whenever he wanted a spinoff, for 12 years ,Mike Franks was his sole mentor, then it was Macy from NCIS decision not to charge him, then it was Mike Franks, and Pride and Gibbs as the backbone of NCIS, then suddenly it was young Ducky that redirected Gibbs from a broken hearted marine, to his full recovery after Shannon’s assassination thru Ducky final days..ok we get it Gibbs is the God of all Agents but CBS that ship and Gibbs has sailed, ADMIT IT
Really upset about NCIS CANCELATIONS of both LA and Hawaii !!!!!!! After reading other comments now I’m really upset your keeping Sydney and not Hawaii? I love British and Australian tv shows, but NCIS is about us. I have a question do you monitor if the shows are watched once they’re sold. I have watched the complete series of Grimm twice since it was canceled, once I found out where I could watch it. Take into consideration that not everyone has the money to pay for the expensive pay to watch apps.
Yes I agree but the management a CBS are not lerning from the past the did the same stupid move in the 1990’s by moveing Murder she wrote to a different day reduceinf the rateings and then canceling it later it was one of the one shows that the had that could deaw an audiance on sunday
With csi:Vegas it was the simple fact once the original leads from csi left in William Petersen and the actress no one cared as that’s why people flocked to it when it came back but after they left it was why watch it when it’s csi: Vegas lite
I think with the short season this year.I think folks thought Blue Bloods would get the 2nd half of the 2024-2025 season. I would venture to guess it was supposed to end this season.
So totally devastated about the end of Blue Bloods. It’s the best show on TV by far. Can’t believe they are cancelling it when there is so much rubbish on our screens. I guess what the viewers want doesn’t count anymore. Shame on you CBS.
I absolutely DETEST this decision CBS has made regarding BlueBloods. I’ve watched this show since its inception some 14 years ago. If a 79 y.o. seasoned Actor like Tom Selleck is willing and able to continue what in HE__ is Wrong with you people❓️‼️‼️
p s. Julie Angus: WELL SAID‼️ Thank You.
Well, I think you identified the problem. Blue Bloods became too expensive for a Friday Night slot. The actors obviously had gotten pay raises along the way (14 years). And I bet that made it untenable over the long term. IIRC, this season only existed because the actors made some sort of dela to reduce costs.
I bet this also applies to NCIS: Hawaii! The production costs with a single Hawaii-based show are probably astronomical.
But in this article which “explains” the cancellation there’s no mention of money; CBS keep saying it’s only about keeping the schedule fresh.
Blue bloods was over mo matter what. Cost are to high this gets another year in the syndication contracts, it’s a cheap way to get the last syndication yr, add a yr of ncis that’s a freebie show makes Friday profitable, along with swat that Sony is giving away cheap, only show that cost anything is fire country, and it was developed fir Friday night so cost are low, cbs has a game plan.
Amy Reisenbach’s actions belie her statement that she’s trying to keep her programming fresh. Really? She keeping on CBS the 22-year-old NCIS, with its declining ratings, over NCIS Hawaii, which is only three years old. Then she brings on NCIS Origins set in the 1990s for next year, which no fan really asked for, to dramatize the backstory to Gibbs, who hasn’t been on NCIS for over two
years. She also is bringin back Matlock, a show that no one under 40 remembers or asked for, starring a 76-year-old actress. How many in the youth demographic will tune in? How “fresh” will this rehash be? My prediction? Matlock and NCIS Origins will be cancelled by CBS’ new owners next year. And so will Amy Reisenbach. If we’re lucky, she’ll never be in charge of programming again.
She really doesn’t come across as a good communicator, or at least someone who shows no respect to the cast, crews and fans of these shows. There’s nothing fresh about so many reboots and spin-offs. It doesn’t look as though she’s even been willing to acknowledge the continued ratings success of shows like Blue Bloods (or TV Line & other sites haven’t mentioned she did).
Exactly. And she thinks The Price Is Right and Hollywood Squares will be hits?! LOL. Why should we watch either of those shows when there are better shows on the other networks or cable.
Occasional primetime TPIR specials have existed for… years.
Just as filler. The TPIR primetime specials have never been hits.
That’s just what I was thinking. Actually, I think CBS doesn’t know who their audience is. Cancelling So Help Me Todd for a rehash of Matlock?
I used to watch reruns of Matlock and I have no interest in watching this reboot no matter how old Kathy Bates is. I did look it up though, and Andy Griffith was only 60 when he played Matlock. Even the actress who played his daughter would only be 69 now.
Matlock? Eww. Gross. What’s next? Diagnosis: Murder?
Forget the lame ’90s show reboots. I would watch gunsmoke remake with grittier, edgier type content.
Great comment. So true. I’m finished with CBS.
Very well said. I think keep Blue Bloods (one of the very best shows on TV), keep NCIS Hawaii and get rid of Matlock and Amy Reisenbach.
I have watched Blue Bloods and SWAT from their first episodes. I just wish that of the two Blue Bloods would have been renewed. SWAT has not been good this season as they were cleaning house since the were cancelled already the show is not the same without Street, Luca and then soon Deacon
Deacon’s retirement arc came before S.W.A.T. was uncancelled. They surely aren’t stupid enough to get rid of Jay Harrington, that can be reversed at the start of the next season.
Perfect example of a non-answer “answer” there Amy Reisenbach. 🤦♂️
That was one of the most PR filled responses ever. Made NO sense at all. She’s speaking “exec” BS right and left.
So did not explain anything. Other than what we already knew in that it was ending. Not why this show over other shows they make, not why this show is ending but going ahead with a new spin-off no one asked for. Nope just the normal we decided to end for no reason other then we wanted to. Not down to viewership, or cost of making the show going up. Also stated it was not down to the writers strike. Which while good to know is also not the reason.
At least NCIS is going forward as the original is still the nest out of them.
I really like both Blue Bloods and NCIS – Hawaii. I also liked the LA and New Orleans versions of NCIS. I only watched the Sydney one and a half shows. I really couldn’t get into it. Not a fan of the accents, even though I have an Australian friend. I wish Hawaii would stay and Sydney go!
I can’t believe that NCIS Hawaii got cancelled and they are putting NCIS Sydney on Friday. SMH. I will not watch Sydney! I’ve always loved the original NCIS but how long is it going to stay on the air? How about cutting costs and cut that show. I would prefer that NCIS LA and New Orleans were still on the air versus Sydney.
I would love for Blue Bloods to go on longer and will miss So Help Me Todd too. With Tracker being such a good show, I’m surprised that wasn’t moved to Thursday.
Shame on CBS for cancelling NCIS Hawaii. It was a tragedy for the CBS line up when NCIS New Orleans and NCIS LA left. CBS is making a HUGE mistake for example: bringing back Matlock etc.
I really don’t understand why they couldn’t film these canceled series and air them durring the summer there is a desert of good choices durring the summer months. or even better let the Freshmen shows earn a fall spot by running in the summer.
that was not an explanation. they need to allow shows to finish story lines – always. and there is nothing fresh about recycling a retired character – that’s the opposite.
Then keep Hawaii and cancel Sydney
I am very disappointed!
Keeping things fresh, by presenting the origin story of Jethro Gibbs?
Jesus
That is a sweet comment by Amy Reisenback. But to me it just they decide to use the budget for Hawaii to fund the two new NCIS shows that NO ONE ask for. Also, has any notice that shows with an LGBTQ characters in it have been canceled? ( yes equalize as one but not an important character arc.) So the the comments are just a cop out. I also don’t think networks should be allowed to cancel a show after a writer/ actor strike and a short sesaon.
Plus from I what I have read the cast and crew found out just like everyone else. That just proves the Amy Reisenback and Paramount had no respect for the cast crew.
I love NCIS Hawaii because of the characters and mostly Kacy fan big time. I was and still am a little depressed and upset about the cancelation. I know shows get canceled but this one really got to me.
TV line should do so investigating to see if the budget is going to the new NCIS shoes or if just make it up.
So Amy Reisenback bring back NCIS Hawaii!!!
Psych sorry if I rambling. I’m just upset.
The Psych part should not be there. Was type on a phone and auto correct didn’t see when posting. Also, Matlock, yeah great choice.
I just think it’s sad for the Hawaii film/tv industry that they are losing their shows. Hawaii 5-0, Magnum, NCIS Hawaii… and now.. nothing
“It’s important to us to refresh the schedule” says CBS exec while renewing NCIS for it’s 22nd season and Survivor for it’s 50th.
I wish they’d shop it around somewhere else…
Very upset. I love both shows. I was upset when they canceled NCIS Los Angeles and now this! Shows that are decent are being canceled and being replaced with stupid I don’t even know shows.
Blue Bloods IS A MUST BE RENEWED SHOW!!!!
Like NCIS Hawaii. Support another season.
Blue Blood old and redundant. Quit watching it years ago.
So totally devastated about the end of Blue Bloods. It’s the best show on TV by far. Can’t believe they are cancelling it when there is so much rubbish on our screens. I guess what the viewers want doesn’t count anymore. Shame on you CBS.
If you are going to “refresh” shows after 2.5 seasons what is the point of getting into any of them? I hope CBS grows to regret their decision to cancel NCIS Hawai’i.
Also hope they regret canceling Blue Bloods!
If you’re canceling these shows why keep Equalizer?
Total B S, I say to the CBS President! It all comes down to money.
When people do not watch Chanel TV,
you only have yourselves in power to blame!
I wasn’t happy when they cancelled NCIS New Orleans – or NCIS LA – and I’m really unhappy with the cancellation NCIS Hawaii! So sad to see these really great shows go – PS we loved the reboot of Magnum PI – but the cancelled that to:-(
I love ncis hawaï i don’t understand your choice it is not a good one
Agreed, we were battered with the homophobes fans having strokes over KACY, Lucy appeared less than 1/3rd of the season, the closest they got to intimacy was their staged marriage, I saw a thousand RW nuts stroking out over it, for no reson
I love them as a couple. Lucy was gone a lot, because the actress was probably filming The Chosen.
