OK, now it is.
ABC has cancelled the comedy Not Dead Yet after just two seasons, TVLine has learned.
Not Dead Yet has been averaging 2.7 million total viewers and a 0.3 demo rating (with Live+7 playback), down 21% and 40% from its freshman run. Among the three sitcoms that ABC has aired this TV season, it ranks last in both measures.
The series starred Jane the Virgin vet Gina Rodriguez as Nell, a journalist on the obituary beat who can communicate with the ghosts of those she is assigned to write up. The cast also included Hannah Simone (New Girl) as Nell’s friend/coworker, Sam; Joshua Banday (Upload) as Nell’s editor, Dennis; Lauren Ash (Superstore) as Nell’s newspaper boss, Lexi; Rick Glassman (As We See It) as Nell’s roommate, Edward; and Angela Gibbs (On My Block) as Cricket, a widow with whom Nell bonds after Cricket’s dead husband appears to her. Brad Garrett (Everybody Loves Raymond) joined the series-regular ensemble in the second season as Lexi’s dad/newspaper owner Duncan.
The Season 2 finale, which now serves as the series ender, aired April 24. In the episode, Garrett’s character appeared to Nell as a ghost while undergoing surgery. When he came to, Duncan at first didn’t seem to remember anything about his experience on the spiritual plane… until he recalled the feeling of riding in Nell’s Prius as a ghost.
“It sets up a very cool, exciting trajectory for Nell [about] what is life going to be like for Nell moving forward now that somebody, especially this somebody, knows her secret, something she’s kept so super close to the chest,” star and executive producer Rodriguez told TVLine.

Dang it! I really enjoyed this show.
Brad Garrett’s unnecessary character derailed the premise of Not Dead Yet and most episodes of season 2 were disappointing.
It lost focus on the story of the Dead person and their obituary
Like Abbott Elementary, something was missing this year. We enjoyed both shows immensely, but, I don’t know. The glow is gone.
Please someone pick up Not Dead Yet. I really liked this show. And would like to see it have another chance. It’s worked for some shows. I remember TV Line creating a list of shows that went to another network.
Might be popular but shame the network doesn’t want to stick around with that keeps on falling with ratings over time. Seems we will now get to see two new sitcoms as long as they do well with the pilot presentation.
AAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!
It’s ashame it won’t return next year. Is ABC doing 1 hour of comedy vs 2 hours?
Just like ABC did with the Real O’Neals, The Wonder Years, and Home Economics. What a poor choice!
I really hope Not Dead yet gets pickup by another channel or streaming platform… Please don’t take another good show off
This isn’t surprising, but it is disappointing. Season 2 was so much improved from season 1, and I loved that Rick Glassman (who was the least dateable of the Undateable characters) and Lauren Ash (who was drab in khakis and polo shirt on Superstore, and glammed up here) got to play a love affair. Not to mention that the minor characters like Tina the salad lady and Mason the intern were the best bunch of weirdos since Garrett, Leonard, etc. on Community.
Sad, sad ! One of few shows that made me laugh. Not so much this year with Brad Gatret taking so much screen time.
Im so sad this show was canceled. It seems like all clean shows get canceled. This takes an emotional toll on me. I’ll probably have to stop watching series because the good ones are always canceled, even the Good Doctor canceled. I guess I’ll have to tart reading books instead of watching tv.
This is so sad, this show was delightful and getting better and better. It feels like broadcast TV doesn’t understand the Women Under 50 demographic at all, or worse, is absolutely uninterested in trying to keep shows for us on the air. It’s really disappointing and why so many of us flock to streaming (where they understand immediate watch numbers are not everything). Boo.
Why get rid of an entertaining interesting comedy. ABC needs to get in touch with what is good!
Shame on ABC
That’s a bummer. I really enjoyed this show :( They had a really lovely cast
Bummer! I’d rather watch something original like Not Dead Yet than Tim Allen rehash the same show for the third time
So disappointed with this news. I really liked this show and the ensemble cast. The story line was unusual and very clever. We were just getting to connect with the characters and see where Nell might be going in her personal life. I think ABC should have given the series more time. I like the idea that Nell’s secret might have come out in season 3. Networks seem to like to keep reality shows because they are probably cheaper to produce, but who wants to watch crazy people do stupid things. I hope Not Dead Yet gets picked up by a streaming service or another network!
Love this show. Hope some other channel picks it up.
Yes! 😍
Sadly many of us Season 1 viewers tuned out after the unnecessary cast and storyline changes made in Season 2. Not Dead Yet died at the start of Season 2.
It seems like another casualty due to the truncated and disjointed story lines as a result of the disruption caused by the strikes. I would dearly love for the network decision makers to feel the pain that the viewing public and worker bees in their industry have felt this year.
Typical ABC. Gets you hooked, renews for a second season, then whammo it’s cancelled. Any comedy worth watching gets the ax after 2 seasons. Single Parents, Not Yet Dead, Bless This Mess, Home Economics ( they got a magical 3rd season). This network needs to stop making comedies that they aren’t going to support. Stick to your crappy gameshows and then I don’t even need to turn it to ABC at all.
Boo! So disappointed. First CBS cancels my beloved Todd, and now ABC adds to my TV misery by canceling Not Dead Yet. It honestly makes me not want to bother investing in network TV anymore. I am enjoying Elsbeth and was looking forward to Matlock next Fall, but I may just save myself the trouble. Oh well, there are certainly worse problems in the world.
It was such a great show! We will miss it. Here’s hoping it can come back on another network.
I thought it was a good show. I’m sorry to see it get cancelled.
