Suits actor Patrick J. Adams has issued an apology for posting behind-the-scenes photos of the USA Network series during the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.
“The last couple of days I foolishly and thoughtlessly let a trip down Suits memory lane distract me from the very real and ongoing fight everyone in @sagaftra continues to wage in its effort to win our membership realistic 21st century compensation and protections,” Adams wrote in an Instagram Story post on Wednesday. “It was an embarrassing oversight for which I’m incredibly sorry. So grateful to those who gently and swiftly course corrected me here and I look forward to continuing the fight in the days and weeks ahead. #sagaftrastrong”
Members of SAG-AFTRA — the labor union representing more than 160,000 performers — have been on strike since July 13, with negotiations set to resume on Oct. 2; for the duration of the strike, SAG members are discouraged from posting on social media about struck work. Earlier this week, Adams had posted photos from the Suits set that featured co-stars Meghan Markle, Sarah Rafferty, Gabriel Macht, Rick Hoffman, Max Topplin and Gina Torres.
“I miss my friends,” Adams had captioned the photos, which have since been taken down. “Each and every one of them.”
Adams’ social media gaffe comes amid a surprisingly blockbuster summer for Suits, which has earned newfound popularity on Netflix well after its USA Network run ended in 2019. After the first eight seasons (of nine) hit Netflix on June 17, the legal drama has regularly appeared in the streamer’s Top 10 TV Shows in the U.S., and for the week of June 29, Suits set a Nielsen streaming chart record with 3.1 billion minutes viewed on Netflix and Peacock combined. (Find out what that means for a potential revival.)
It was my understanding that it was okay for actors to talk about projects in the past, so if that is indeed the case; why does he need to apologize at all? Besides; I don’t really read that post as a promotion of Suits, but that could be just me.
I believe they can’t talk about any work that is on a struck studio or that was made on a SAG-AFTRA contract, even past works. That’s why the rewatch podcasts all stopped their formatting as well. It’s not just current or future works.
Oh, did the rewatch podcasts all stop? Man, I can’t believe I’ve hallucinated all the episodes of Talkville since the strike started just after their third season. I guess I also imagined them saying that they’d figured out how to keep doing it during the strike.
Idk man I totally understand why ppl can get confused, it really seems like there’s a lot of flexibility out there and people should just contact their union before doing iffy stuff and people on the outside should chill out a bit unless someone is obviously deliberately breaking the rules.
No.I’m listening to How Tude Tannerinos by Jodie Sweetin and Andrea Barber
Rewatch podcasts didn’t stop. Some chose to, but they didn’t have to.
Uh, not the ones I listen to!
The Will & Grace podcast is going strong with the actors.
There was some confusing initial guidance from SAG-AFTRA which they eventually clarified as don’t start a new rewatch podcast, but honor any existing contracts.
Yes my understanding too. However what gives them the right to say what other can do or not? It go’s to show that they have far to much power already.
From my understandings, they were/were not allowed to talk about past work
I don’t think he broke a rule, he got attacked by fans who may not realize it though and caved to that.
SAG-AFTRAs guidelines state that actors should avoid talking about past work for struck studios. That’s why actors couldn’t make convention appearances other than selling photos/autographs
But he wasn’t talking about it, just saying he missed his FRIENDS and showing BTS pics. Lots of people–writers, actors–have been doing that for the whole strike! For far more recent work than Suits to boot. And as someone else here pointed out, showing pics of recently passed people they’d worked with and paying tribute. None of that is really PROMOTION, is it?
IDK, I don’t think it’s worth jumping on someone about all that. Fight the real enemy. It’s important to keep on keeping on in these hopefully final weeks of negotiation but at a certain point extreme strictness backfires.
I hate that he felt he had to do this. He didn’t do anything wrong.
He absolutely did nothing wrong. But sadly too many people have too much access to too much internet, which makes them an authority on everyone and everything. It’s exhausting.
Yeah, I’m obv pro-strike but this is an enormous reach for anyone to get upset about or pretend undermines the cause.
Who cares? I can’t believe he even thought he had to apologize for this.
Whether he had to apologize or not, he did the right thing. This is a funny industry and you do what’s right if you want to be considered for future projects. Its all about your image, connections, contacts, who will work with you and who won’t. Always best to stay in the right lane.
Huh? He didn’t even talk about the show, just posted a pic of him with his fellow actors? How does that break the rules of promoting past stuff? Ehhh, it’s a bit off.
I totally agree. Only logic contortion I can come up with is that anyone unfamiliar with “Suits” who saw the photos might indeed Google “what’s the show with Adams and Markle?” Or something. But yeah I wouldn’t lose sleep over this. 😴
So if actors aren’t allowed to talk about past work (a ridiculous rule, IMHO), why is it OK for other actors to post statements/pictures/messages paying tribute to fellow actors who passed away? There has been some of that during the strike but I didn’t see anyone posting apologies for that a day later.
(Or was all that because those were from different studios that do not fall under this rule?)
Not because they were from a different studio, but because he was “talking” about a SHOW that originated from a studio that is being struck (striked?) against.
It’s a weird rule because suits is currently syndicating on Netflix as a newish show with old episodes It’s viewed as promoting a new or current project.
Where as smallville and will and grace don’t have new contracts for syndication, the always sunny guys stopped as well for this reason.
It’s a weird rule, he’s just trying to cover his butt… his show has been the one they have used the most to prove in streaming world views equal no extra money for actors/writers
Probably because it is a ridiculous rule and doesn’t need to be strictly enforced unless someone is trying to skirt around and promote their project on a technicality. I’ve actually been pretty pleased with the amount of flexibility I’ve seen–the Her Universe Fashion Show at SDCC, rewatch podcast for Smallville called TalkVille still going with actors and writers talking about the show each week, some influencers being allowed to talk about their fandom so long as they don’t promote current live action shows. That’s all been okayed by the union and I’m sure more stuff not on my radar.
I suspect this all is one of those things were its randos getting a bee in their bonnet rather than the actual arbiters laying down the law. I’ve seen plenty of insta posts with behind the scenes shots and op talking about actors they worked with; imo if SAG-AFTRA really thought it was going to damage negotiations they’d say something about it.
House of Halliwell and How Rude, Tanneritos! have also continued. I think the latter actually started during the strike.
So, Kerry Washington never apologised for this ?

Oh well, maybe The Light and the #Olitz hashtag are not related to one of her shows
This is past work that all parties involved has been paid for. I really don’t see the problem with his post and think this is too far.
Personable an great actor in his own Time.
You’d think he would have run into (at least some of) them walking the picket lines (aside from MM, who’s moved on).
He might live in Canada
The world is nuts. Totally unstable.
Who cares? I can’t believe he even thought he had to apologize for this.
No need to apologize for missing anyone. Its not like you were working as a scab. What is wrong with people?
That’s dumb. Just my opinion. Past work should be celebrated.
It threw me off when I saw he posted an apology on Instagram. An apology wasn’t necessary because it’s not like he was making people go watch the show because of his posts. I think if you compare situations, what Amell did was way worse.
Molly Sims did the same thing for the 20th anniversary of Las Vegas (great show, btw), but she took it down without some big apology. I think it’s a little over the top for some big apology for something like this. People are making such a huge deal about this like it’s life or death. Kinda crazy!
Give. Me. A. Break. Really? Dude can’t make an Insta post? So ridiculous.
Huh? I’m just flabbergasted. Some of these people get upset over the stupidiest things while letting more serious and important things that are happening in the industry go unclocked. Smh
