Primo, the coming-of-age comedy inspired by the life of author/journalist/former teacher Shea Serrano, has been cancelled at Freevee after just one eight-episode season.
Serrano — who created the series and served as an executive producer alongside Michael Schur, David Miner, Morgan Sackett, Peter Murrieta and Lisa Muse Bryant — shared the sad news on social media, almost exactly one year after the show’s May 2023 binge release.
Hailing “a short but beautiful run,” Serrano wrote on Tuesday, “sadly we’re not gonna be making any more episodes of PRIMO.
“I will always be indebted to everyone who worked on the show to make it so great and I will always be thankful to everyone who watched and championed it,” Serrano continued. “Thank you for real — long live PRIMO.”
The single-camera, semi-autobiographical comedy followed Rafa Gonzales (played by newcomer Ignacio Diaz-Silverio), a wide-eyed 16-year-old being raised by his clever mother, Drea (United We Fall‘s Christina Vidal), and his five overbearing uncles as they live their lives on the south side of San Antonio, Texas.
Primo also starred Johnny Rey Diaz (Grey’s Anatomy), Henri Esteve (grown-ish), Martin Martinez (Magnum P.I.), Jonathan Medina (Walker Independence), Carlos Santos (Gentefied), Nigel Siwabessy, Efrain Villa (Better Call Saul), and Stakiah Lynn Washington.
BOOOOOOOOO
I guess this isn’t a huge surprise but still, what a shame, this show was so funny and sweet without being corny.
This was such a good show I’m mad now
Every streamer just cancels shows after a season or 2, that seems to be the normal way now.
Well darn. It was a delightful show that I hoped would catch on. It was sweet, smart, and funny, a difficult trio.
Dragging cancellations out for a year seems so cruel, regardless of the business model and other circumstances that factor into the decision. Wishing aligning opportunities on the cast and creative team.
Its too bad this show never got any real promotion as it was truly a hidden gem. Given the story and age of the main character it’s almost better to think of it as a movie than a series. I just hope they don’t pull the series entirely ala Max.
I’m really sad. This show was so great. Couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen next. Can’t believe it was canceled 😢. But shows that should’ve been canceled years ago are still on i.e. Grey’s Anatomy, Law and Order, Csi, and so on. It would of been nice to see if another network would of picked it up. It was really a great cast of characters storyline was different and original. It nice to see a show about latinos in a positive way.
Oh no, what a huge disappointment! Primo is such a wonderful, funny, endearing, laugh out loud show with fantastic casting across the board. What a bummer. I look forward to whatever Shea does next, and hope to see all of the cast pop up in other things in the future.
I’m in Canada where we don’t have access to FreeVee or Hulu (without a VPN, at least), but based on the cast picture, it’s vessel and it’s short, short run, it reminds me of Pig Pen & Platypus Man on the launch of the UPN netlet in 1995. lol If you remember them or want to view them on YouTube (or at least the opening themesongs), you may see parallels. So I can’t say it for sure, not having seen this show, but I think I’m probably right.
That’s unfortunate. This was an excellent, underrated show.
It made me happy to see a Latino show that was actually worth a watch but I feel that it failed to get promotion and make people aware of it. I only knew about the show because I follow Henri Esteve on social media & since he’s in it he would post about the show on his social media. The cast and crew should feel proud of what they did regardless.
This is a shame, really enjoyed Primo and his uncles
I just discovered this series and am greatly disappointed at its cancellation. I wish this decision would be reconsidered. This series is entertaining, funny, heartwarming, fresh and addictive. The cast’s effortless and natural portrayal of his/her character endears us to each episode. Season 2 would have been an even bigger hit than the first. In my opinion, it was more entertaining than “The Wonder Years” (both versions).
Is there any chance Primo will be picked up by another network or service? This show seriously is on par with Young Sheldon and Abbot Elementary in its comedic content. The actors do an exemplary job inhabiting the show’s thoroughly original characters. The plot lines were original, the dialogue organic on and the acting/comedic timing a revelation.
It’s a shame Amazon didn’t market this show with the same vigor of as their other offerings (“Idea of You”, I’m side eyeing you right here).
Primo has an audience. I love truly George Lopez, but his latest sitcom is genuinely cringe worthy. Because I’m such a fan, I kept hoping the comedy would eventually hit a stride – never has. I am really sorry to say that. But – the fact that this show got a second season is a testament to the fact that audiences want to see a show with this concept.
This show deserves to be picked up by another production company (Netflix? ABC?, you listening?) that is ready to provide the marketing for the next big hit.
As a general rule, a creator won’t publicly announce the E-N-D end of a series if there is any chance of it being shopped/”saved” by someone.
