The Slayer is about to meet her next match: Sarah Michelle Gellar has officially joined Paramount+ With Showtime’s prequel series Dexter: Original Sin, the streamer/cabler announced Thursday.
The actress will play Tanya Martin, the CSI Chief at the Miami Metro Police Department and Dexter’s new boss.
“Sarah Michelle Gellar is a pop culture icon who perfectly rounds out our best-in-class cast featuring Christian Slater and Patrick Dempsey among others,” president of Content and Chief Creative Officer, Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios & Paramount Media Networks Nina L. Diaz said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to have her return to the Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios family and join the origin story of the Dexter franchise.”
Dexter: Original Sin is set in 1991 Miami, 15 years before the original series, as Dexter “transitions from student to avenging serial killer,” according to the official synopsis. “When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness. With the guidance of his father, Harry, he adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcements’ radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.”
In addition to Slater and Dempsey, Gellar joins other previously announced cast members including Patrick Gibson (Shadow & Bone) as Dexter, Molly Brown (Billions) as Debra Morgan, James Martinez (Love, Victor) as Angel Batista, Christina Milian (Grandfathered) as Maria LaGuerta, Alex Shimizu (The Blacklist) as Vince Masuka and Reno Wilson (Good Girls) as Bobby Watt.
Dexter vet Clyde Phillips will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Michael C. Hall, who famously portrayed the titular character for eight seasons plus the sequel series Dexter: New Blood, will also executive-produce.
Gellar was last seen in Paramount+’s one-and-done supernatural teen drama Wolf Pack. Aside from Buffy, her other TV credits include The Crazy Ones, Ringer and All My Children.
