It’s curtain call for Schmigadoon!

Apple TV+ has cancelled the musical satire after two seasons, TVLine has confirmed. The news comes eight months after the release of the May 3 finale, which earned a TVLine reader grade of “A.”

“I am sad to share that Apple will not be moving forward with Season 3 of Schmigadoon!” series co-creator Cinco Paul shared on Instagram Thursday. “The season is written (including 25 new songs) but we unfortunately won’t be making it. Such is life.

“I want to thank everyone involved with the show, our incredible cast and crew and writers, our wonderful supporters at Broadway Video, Universal and Apple, for everything they did to make it happen. It’s a miracle we even got two seasons, honestly, and I’m so grateful we did,” he said. “And to all the fans of the show out there, thank you with all of my heart. Your love and support has meant so much, and the fact that you connected with our show, that it brought you some joy, means the world to me. This was tough news to get, but the optimist in me is convinced it’s not the end of Schmigadoon… and maybe it’s even a happy beginning.”

Whereas Season 1 of Schmigadoon! closed on a cliffhanger — Melissa and Josh were about to cross the bridge, but still hadn’t reached the other side — the Season 2 finale offered a pretty definitive ending: After the sinister Octavius Kratt was killed via chandelier, Madam Frau took over the cabaret club and used her position to promote new and exciting talent such as Dr. Frank-N-Furter former Sgt. Rivera; attorney Bobby Flanagan teamed up with the Topher’s tribe to break up Kratt’s monopolies; lovebirds Topher and Jenny found use for their talents at Miss Codwell’s orphanage; and Codwell and Dooley went into business together. Heck, even the narrator, who was revealed to work for the leprechaun, got to decide his own fate, hitching himself to Sgt. Rivera.

With all those loose ends tied up, Melissa and Josh were free to leave Schmicago and return to New York City — but before they left, one final musical number warned them that happy endings don’t exist; there are only happy beginnings. What followed was a brief epilogue revealing that our central duo have a baby after years of struggling to conceive.

The star-studded ensemble included Cecily Strong, Keegan-Michael Key, Dove Cameron, Ariana DeBose, Jaime Camil, Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming, Fred Armisen, Ann Harada, Jane Krakowski, Aaron Tveit, Titus’s Burgess, Patrick Page and Martin Short.
