Courteney Cox’s horror-comedy Shining Vale won’t scare up more episodes at Starz, which has cancelled the series after two seasons, TVLine has learned.
“Starz has made the difficult decision to not renew Shining Vale for Season 3,” a network rep confirmed in a statement to TVLine. “Unfortunately Shining Vale did not find a large enough audience for us to continue, but we hope to have the opportunity to partner with Courteney Cox, Jeff Astrof and Sharon Horgan in the future.”
Shining Vale‘s Dec. 1 sophomore finale now serves as its series finale. Per our sister site Variety, both seasons will also be removed from Starz’s on-demand library by the end of the year.
The series starred Cox as Patricia “Pat” Phelps, a former wild child who had gotten clean and sober, but was left totally unfulfilled, leading her to have a torrid affair with a young handyman. In a last-ditch effort to save their marriage, Pat and her husband Terry (Greg Kinnear) moved their family to a large, old house in the titular suburban town, which was haunted by a spirit (Mira Sorvino) that only Pat could see.
Shining Vale‘s cancellation at Starz comes after the premium cabler previously axed Heels, Run the World and Blindspotting. Hightown, meanwhile, will end with its upcoming third season; get an exclusive first look at the final episodes.

Noooo to many shows getting cancelled without a proper sent off. I’m done with new show wasting hours for nothing 😡😢 it just needed one more season
So much f***ing BOO! I NEED to know where it was headed!
I loved the 1st season but season 2 was just so far out there that I didn’t enjoy it as much. Wonderful actors though!
@ Sue: Same here.
It was a train wreck, but the cast was so good you didn’t care. I mean Kinear and the kids brilliant, they made Sorvino bearable. I get it you have voices, doesn’t mean they are good.
Networks seriously need to cool it with ending all these shows. There is barely anything left. People will turn on you if there is nothing to watch.
The streamers and most premium cable outlets simply cannot afford production costs beyond the earliest seasons, unless the show is a monster hit. Or if it does enough merch sales to bouy it long term.
Then they should just start commissioning series with ‘planned obselescence.’ A series is plotted with X amount of episodes and concludes regardless with how popular it ends up becoming.
Wall Street finally said to all the streamers that they have to produce a profit or lose their funding. At this rate, most streamers will end up being nostalgia networks without new content. Or, as was leaked yesterday, you’ll see more megamerger announcements like TWD and Paramount+.
Cancelling my Starz subscription. I got it for this show!
Season two went weird and I had a hard time following. I’m not surprised it was cancelled.
There are a lot of streaming and premium channel shows that start out great, but aren’t going anywhere. They don’t make network TV, or the better premium cable channels, because there is not “there” there. The show is a great concept, and a few good eps in S1, but there is no long term quality there.
And it seemed like a really popular show too.
WHYYYY…??!?!!
This is why I rarely even try getting into shows any more; no point of investing the time, as most get 1 or 2 Seasons at most.
This was a weird, funny, kooky, suspenseful, well-acted (and cast) and interesting & original show.
My hopes are beyond low for the future of scripted series, and this just may have thrown cold water on my last burning ember of hope for unique content…
Booo. The second season wasn’t as good as the first, but still sad to see it cancelled. Cox and Kinnear were both great, and I really hope to see Gus Birney who played their daughter in more things. She was hilarious. Also a massive eyeroll to yet another show being deleted from the streaming library. This trend NEEDS to stop.
I’ve been catching up on season 2 now, and it’s great. Disappointed to read this.
Seriously??
The content is getting removed by the end of the year?? That’s like 2weeks away!
What the crap is up with these streamers just removing content??
Because they have to pay residuals on viewings. With no revenue coming in. So if they take it off the streaming service, it doesn’t cost them any more money.
It’s possibly also going to be written off, and they can’t generate any more profit in that case, so it needs to be removed from streaming.
At least they should wait a couple months so people can stream them. Like me.
They could at least give more than just 12 days warning of it being dropped UGH. This was something I was going to start in the next month or two, now there’s not even enough time to watch it. Hope it ends on a FAST eventually *sigh*
I love the first season but the second season was trash.
NOOOOOOOO!!!!
This is one of the funniest shows I’ve seen lately. I don’t normally care for horror stuff, but this was a clever parody.
There were so many hilarious bits and just loads of ridiculousness that kept me entertained.
*Plays Swing Out Sister’s Breakout and sobs*
Yes this is mine and my friends fave show, we needed one more season. Read IMDB the reviews are all there!
It’s annoying that it’s being removed from the platform. Isn’t the platform more valuable if there is more content to stream?
Heartbroken!! I binged this show in a weekend because of Greg Kinnear and liked it. He is a great actor & I would’ve definitely continued watching. I’ve already had to deal with Starz canceling Heels & Run The World and now I get to add this show to that list. All that’s left is for them to also cancel Minx for me to be over the edge. What a waste of another good project they had on their hands. It seems like Power is what their priority is as far as renewals go.
Sadly, I’m pretty sure they did cancel Minx. I hate to be the one to break that to you. :/
I can not believe Starz cancelled this GREAT, WANTING MORE SHOW !!!! I dont get it. Why do they keep doing this ?
Why are shows like this nowadays canceled after 1 or 2 seasons, only 8-10 episodes each season. And then remove the already watched and loved episodes there already are?? If Starz removes shining vale episodes then I am removing Starz. I want my money back for the Ap. Will be calling Starz for a refund. Uuuhh
It was watchable but I won’t miss it.
Well this is heartbreaking. I loved the whole series and now you leave it on a cliffhanger never to be continued. I’m sure enough people were watching it. This was the only show I could actually sit and watch because I can relate through being bi polar and schizophrenic. This is a show that was highlighting mental health and there is not enough of that these days. Maybe if you were to put the show on to a larger audience platform like disney plus or Netflix then it would, ot have to end.
Or at least green light one last season or even a few episodes to wrap it up.
Yeah im bummed shining vale is canceled, it seems like when you finally find a good show to watch, someone tells you that you can’t have that anymore, I believe stars does that alot to good shows. My thoughts would be dont cut something off that hasn’t been on long enough. “Disappointed”. Maybe just maybe give it more than 2 seasons.
I am so bummed to hear this! I immediately wanted more after the finale and was wondering how long I would have to wait for more. I’m invested now! I believe I heard elsewhere that they are even removing it from streaming at the end of the year. I understand they felt it didn’t get enough viewers but I find a lot of streaming shows can take a bit to attract a following. This is especially true when you don’t see a lot of advertising. I’ll just leave it at this I guess…”I forking love you Pat!”
I hope someone picks up season 3 as the writer has been working it.
On Starz removing the streaming episodes – with a last day of viewing December 31, 2023 – they just don’t want to pay anyone for their work after they cancel the show.
I enjoy the entertainment but I’m getting pretty tired of executives pulling shows, not paying actors, writers, et.al and, raising prices so the executives can maintain their gazillionaire take home pay.
Shining vale was highly entertaining
Wish we’d see more seasons
I enjoyed Shining Vale! The storyline was unique with interesting twists. Courtney Cox did a great job. I was definitely looking forward to a third season.
I cannot believe they have cancelled Shining Vale, absolutely gutted, it was brilliant, I need to know more 😫😫
