Snowpiercer‘s Final Season Cancelled at TNT, Will Be Shopped Elsewhere
The fourth and final season of Snowpiercer, TNT‘s sole surviving original series, won’t air on the cabler after all.
The news come barely a week after Warner Bros. Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels claimed “we’re done with that chapter” in which numerous shows under the company umbrella were cancelled, scrapped, un-renewed or unceremoniously removed from HBO Max.
“We can confirm that TNT will not air Season 4 of Snowpiercer,” reads a statement from a network spokesperson. “This was a difficult decision, but our admiration for the talented writers, actors and crew who brought Snowpiercer’s extraordinary post-apocalyptic world to life remains strong. We have been working collaboratively with the producers since last year to help the series find a new home where fans can continue to enjoy the compelling story and exceptional visual experience. We look forward to working with them on future projects.”
Indeed, producer Tomorrow Studios will endeavor to find the dystopian drama’s farewell run a new home.
“We love Snowpiercer and believe Season 4 completes a story with incredible talent that will entertain viewers while exploring issues of climate change and class warfare,” Tomorrow Studios CEO/partner Marty Adelstein and president/partner Becky Clements said in a joint statement. “We are so passionate about this series that we have acquired the rights to control the franchise. We hope to find the perfect partner shortly and finish a great ride with the final season.”
Back in June 2022, TNT announced that Snowpiercer — which stars Daveed Diggs and Jennifer Connelly and had received an early Season 4 pick-up — “will end after a successful, multi-season run on TNT.” At the time of that announcement, production was underway on its final batch of episodes. Since then, Seasons 1-3 were quietly scrubbed from HBO Max.
Snowpiercer, upon Animal Kingdom ending, was TNT’s only remaining scripted original. The network was once a scripted powerhouse — home to such series as The Alienist, Claws, The Closer (and its spinoff Major Crimes), the Dallas revival, Falling Skies, Franklin & Bash, The Last Ship, Leverage, The Librarians, Perception and Rizzoli & Isles.

Trying/Endeavoring to find a new home is not “this is it’s new home.” So until a new one is found, in theory and however miniscule,(and potentially however ‘hard’ they try) there is a chance it might never be aired. Netflix has global rights minus China and the US, chances are fairly high season 4 will be available somewhere. a recent example, You Me Her (season 5) streamed in Canada but as far as I know never aired/streamed in the US because the Audience Network shut down.

Don’t be so sure. Season 5 of the Good Doctor is not available on DVD (except in the UK). I’ve asked around everywhere and got no answer from anyone. I think since ABC licenses it from Sony they’re too damn cheap to master and replicate

Matt why do they do things like that? It seems like wasting money to have something made and not show it. TNT had some really good shows. I hate to see them change so drastically.
TNT / HBO / Warner Brothers discovery didn’t actually pay to film the show; the producing studio did. TNT/HBO/WBD had agreed to pay a license fee per episode (that most likely didn’t even cover the full cost of production either), but probably had a kill fee to get out of that arrangement that is less money than the license fee.
If TNT is getting out of the scripted TV business, what does this mean for “The Lazarus Project”? The British series was announced for a Jan. 23 TNT premiere, but no longer seems to be on the schedule.

Watching what Discovery is doing to TNT/TBS etc, getting rid of scripted and quality programming, moving to Discovery channels type dreck, is sad and discouraging. What does Zaslow have against scripted quality?

Exactly. Discovery is not an attractive channel to everyone and they are trying to force it down our throat. All they will do is lose alot of subscribers with crap content.
Paying actors for residuals. Their latest TLC 500 pound medical marvel or 90 Day Fiance isn’t going to even ask for scale.
It seems that ALOT of the 90 day people seem to able to have nice things if they’re not getting paid enough. Eg. All those airline trips to Nogeria, S Africa, etc

It’s one of their latest tax write-downs; they cannot financially benefit from it now.
When HBOMAX pulled seasons 1-3 and the rash of renewal reversals, I am surprised they waited this long to tell us… It feels like a good fit for Amazon Prime. Someone is going to grab it.

Unreal. The repeated instances of cancelling renewal orders are cruel. Not airing something apparently already filmed is a waste. I haven’t watched anything on TNT for a long while now – still ticked that they cancelled Good Behavior and was only holding out to see this last season of Snowpiercer – but I guess I’m “done with that chapter.” It’s a real shame. There were some great shows across basic cable. Not so much anymore. I hope Snowpiercer lands at Hulu – it seems a good match. Let people catch up on the previous seasons and then add this last one. If not there, then Netflix.
Why do the good scripted shows always get picked up by paid for and streaming networks ? I can barely afford the standard television services and now add these additional expenses is like extortion so I can follow a series ?
You could subscribe for an individual month here and there when your favorites come out. Less options for rewatch but not that different philosophically or cost-wise from renting DVDs from Blockbuster back in the day, and you get a whole month to watch what you want, plus whatever else is on the streamer that piques your interest.
This is a disgrace! The show’s concept & actors were phenomenal so why TNT has cancelled it from their lineup is a huge mistake. Hopefully, the show will be televised on another normal channel, not one for which one has to subscribe!!

I haven’t watched Snowpiercer, but I’m legitimately sad about the loss of TNT original programming… so many of my favorite shows were on TNT. I was in the hospital for two months last year and passed the time by watching The Closer and Major Crimes… TNT really knew drama. Great shows. It’s a shame it’s ending like this…

Well, this is a fun new world we’re living in. Renewal means basically nothing. The euphoria of seeing your favorite show renewed means nothing until the first episode airs. Or maybe the last episode. I mean, I don’t even watch Snowpiercer, but this trend of unrenewing sucks.
Can Netflix take over with the distribution? They have the rights outside U.S.

I’m so done with TNT. I only hope that someone else takes the opportunity to air the final season of Snowpiercer, on behalf of the many fans & the fine work done by the cast & crew. Too bad HBO MAX was so short sighted. They could have picked up Season 4, continued to stream the previous 3 seasons, & had a great long running show for people to discover & enjoy.
Meanwhile, now cable & streaming are jumping into more reality & competition programming, which I can’t stand on any platform. If that is what viewers wanted, we’d just watch broadcast TV, which is filled with it. A lot of us pay for premium cable & streaming in order to watch well acted, well written scripted shows. They will lose subscribers if they ignore that.
What a load of HORSE-S#@T! I’ve watched (like many of us) all 3 Seasons of Snowpiercer on TNT week-to-week not only because it was some damn good TV but also in assuming I’d get to see this show’s end where it began. Being HBOMax isn’t an option then my only hope is that it is successfully “shopped” to Amazon Prime Video as that’s the only other service I have access to and could at least watch it on my phone. I am on a fixed SSDI income. I have HBOMax “access” as a Spectrum customer. I have Prime Video through Amazon’s lower-cost EBT-eligible Prime Membership. What I do not have are a smart TV, still use a CRT “Box” TV. I do not have a game system beyond PS2, therefore no need for home internet and no way to “Stream” whoever that nowadays is just and assumed every household has or the capability to. Very similar to what’s now happening to Snowpiercer is why I’ve been bitter when CBS after 4 – 5 Seasons of Seal Team locked it up behind Paramount+, and the others that I first watched on their network in Evil and/or Blood & Sand, never able to see ’em again! I realize earlier I surmised that IF Snowpiercer goes to Prime Video I could at least watch that on the phone I type from, however, in being real, that’s not exactly a pleasant experience, but is there if needed. If Hulu, Netflix, etc. “picks it up” means I’m FUBAR, and while this is 2023 I know I am NOT the only person out there that’s like me, and in case it’s assumed I’m an out-of-touch octogenarian joke’s on whomever, I’m only 40.

I don’t watch this show, but I think this is lame. It’s like a big screw you to the viewers.
Renewals mean nothing now. Even a show/movie already being filmed means nothing anymore. We’re basically living in a world where we won’t know if we’ll ever get to see something until the moment it’s actually airing.
That’s my new baseline – until I see a new season actually airing, I take any renewal news with a heaping dose of salt.
A pox on Warner Bros Discovery. I hope the FCC comes down HARD on future mergers. On the other hand, when the board sees how things are plummeting – WBD may sell for bargain basement prices.
