Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Officially Secures Early Season 3 Renewal
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is coming back for more space adventures.
Paramount+ announced Tuesday that the sci-fi series has been officially renewed for Season 3. Additionally, Season 2 will premiere on Thursday, June 15; new episodes will stream weekly.
The streamer also revealed that the animated comedy Star Trek: Lower Decks has been renewed for a 10-episode fifth season. Season 4 will premiere this summer; an exact date has not yet been revealed. Plus, the animated children’s series Star Trek: Prodigy will return for Season 2 this winter.
Set in the years before Kirk takes the helm of the U.S.S. Enterprise, Strange New Worlds follows Captain Christopher Pike (played by Anson Mount), Number One Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn) and Science Officer Spock (Ethan Peck) as they explore new worlds around the galaxy.
The crew also includes Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush), La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong), Cadet Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), Dr. M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) and Lt. Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia).
Vampire Diaries alum Paul Wesley, who appeared as James T. Kirk in the Season 1 finale, will recur as the future Enterprise captain in Season 2. “In the Season 1 finale, it’s a very plot-driven episode [and] we don’t really get to explore Kirk in the same way that we do in Season 2,” Wesley previously told TVLine. “It’s a younger Kirk. It’s a Kirk pre-Enterprise, and so we get to really have fun [next season].” [pmc_inline_gallery]
The new season will also see Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s Carol Kane drop by as Pelia, a highly educated engineer who “suffers no fools,” per the official description, and solves problems “calmly and brusquely, thanks to her many years of experience.”
Plus, fans can expect a crossover episode with Star Trek: Lower Decks, featuring both live-action and animation, as Lower Decks’ Ensign Beckett Mariner (voiced by Tawny Newsome) and Ensign Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) drop by the U.S.S. Enterprise.

I wonder how they are going to do the Lower Decks crossover? Either time travel or the Holodeck?

Well, the crossover is an episode of SNW, and they don’t have a holodeck. It wouldn’t make sense for Lower Decks characters to be visiting fake versions of the SNW crew.
I think it’ll be some sort of dimensional/time anomaly that will allow the “real” versions of both casts to somehow interact.
It is such a weird time for the Trek franchise. Discovery and SNW seem to exist in their own universe (more in line with the movies) while Picard season 3 feels like an old friend that I haven’t seen in 20 years. Personally, I’m hoping to see more from Terry Matalas and his crew, but it should be interesting to see how everything irons out with the franchise over the next few years.
Multiple timelines. I’m not well-versed in the lore, but as I understand it theres at least 2 different timelines and one is referred to as the Kelvin timeline. I think Spock reset the timeline in the first movie and then everything since is meant to be that rebooted timeline, other than Picard, but I’m not certain on that.

Discovery – started as Pre-TOS & than time traveled to the future (after Picard stories)
Picard – post STNG movies (and pre Discovery almost 1000 years in the future)
the 3 ST films with Chris Pine & crew – are the only stories in the Kelvin-verse (and part 4 if it ever gets made)
where original Spock aka Spock Prime traveled to the past of an alternate universe … eventually met his younger self & eventually died there – and the stories of those three films have technically nothing to do with any of the current (or past) tv shows – besides Spock Prime being there & meeting his younger/ alternate self
and no Spock didn’t reset anything
all he did was leave his original time period/ universe
and really the only reason for that was so Paramount could tell new stories with young Kirk & crew and not be beholden to anything done before with all the original cast or to anything already explored in the various other tv series of the last 30 years
a creative way to explore new stories with new actors portraying old fan favorite characters & simultaneously not erasing anything to tell new stories with other old characters (ie. Picard, 7 of 9, etc)
…but no information about a possible season four of Star Trek Picard!? The third season is unbelievable! How many people watch the season?
Because there is no 4th season. This is the last season of “Picard” as Patrick wants to retire for good.
The current season of Picard has been officially announced as the last.
As great as it is, I don’t think Sir Patrick can keep playing a series lead indefinitely, and I don’t think the show can creatively top what they have already done.
Season three will be the end for Picard and probably most of the TNG group with the possible exception of Worf. But it’s possible that there will be some continuation with characters like Seven, Worf, and Shaw and the Titan crew. Fan reaction has been positive on that front. But between development and cost-cutting at streamers, we may not hear anything for awhile.
It’s also important to be realistic. Patrick, Jonathan, Gates, Michael, and Brent are all over 70 now, with Marina and LeVar following within a few years. Fans need to be open to new shows and new actors and some forward movement in the timeline and stories.
Paramount has finally come to its senses and has finally shaken off the near disaster of the JJ Abrams Treks. Strange New Worlds and the final season of Picard has finally returned to Trek as it should be,
It hopefully gets 5 seasons like Discovery.

I really liked that Kirk wasn’t a big part of the series in season 1, so I’m a little worried about just how much he’ll be involved. Of course, he could end up doing a fantastic job and they could write really well for him. *Fingers Crossed* Strange New Worlds season one really upped the bar for the new Star Trek shows and I think they deserve the benefit of the doubt. I’m excited they’ve already gotten renewed.
Aside from Discovery, SNW and Lower Decks are quite entertaining!

I am glad that SNW, Lower Decks& Prodigy are going for another season. Picard S3 has been fantastic . Hopefully a Worf/Rafi spin off with Shaw/ 7 would be developed. I do not think that a Section 31 show will materialize as many thought that it would. Michele Yeoh is in demand, but I could see her character appearing in a Worf/Rafi spinoff as a special guest star for a few episodes. I know that her character is supposed be back in the 23rd Century but this is sci fi .
This is a great series with a great cast. Can’t wait for season 2 and now looking forward to season 3. Keep Star Trek alive!!!!

I absolutely believe Strange New Worlds should even go beyond Season 3. For me Season 1 was the best Star Trek I have seen in years! I grew up with TNG in the early 90s. I find the stories of Strange New Worlds easy to understand and relate to. They aren’t as complex as DS9 or Voyager and they don’t have to be.
The actors/cast are incredible. I find the characters honest, inspirational and most of all imperfect, which makes them more realistic and relatable to the audience. I’ve been a fan of Anson Mount from the start but Rebecca Romijn as Number One and Christina Chong as La’an are incredible together but La’an is my favorite. For me she represents the best of a modern woman, strong, independent, extremely capable but at the same time supportive to her crewmates.
I wish Strange New Worlds every success for many more years. I own it on 4K and Blu Ray discs and look forward to many more! Thanks.
Does a barber fix Pike’s hair every morning after shaving him? Pike doesn’t seem like the kind of guy to put half an hour into combing his hair.
If someone is styling him each day, maybe they could dye his hair. It looks prematurely gray. He looks younger than his hair.
I love this series so much, I decided to go back and watch TOS again. Loving it all over again.
I am very happy to learn that Star trek Strange New Worlds. I especially want to see the conclusion to episode 10 which ended with ……. To be continued .
I have enjoyed these new shows all summer and have grown close with the characters and their story line. I am one of the original Trek kids and feel that Strange New Worlds opens a wide story line like the original did.
Love this show and hope it doesn’t take a year to see Season 3!
As a Star Trek fan dating back to the original series in the 60’s I have enjoyed all the series, some more than others, for instance Voyager was a favorite, and have very much enjoyed the last three series, Picard, Discovery and Strange New Worlds, they are all entertaining and satisfying; I eagerly await the new seasons of all of them.
