CBS blinked again!
The Eye network has reversed course, renewing S.W.A.T. for Season 8 midway through what was previously intended as a 13-episode farewell run. Of note, CBS’ press release does not tout the unexpected eighth season as a “final” one.
Season-to-date, the Shemar Moore-led cop show is averaging 6.1 million total viewers (with Live+7 playback), down just 7% from last season.
“Here at CBS, we always ‘stay liquid’ and love a good dramatic twist, especially when it leads to an eighth season of S.W.A.T.,” CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach said in a statement. “The show continues to resonate with viewers thanks to our talented cast led by Shemar Moore and our amazing writers and producers who keep the show relevant and action-packed. We’re very pleased to renew it again and incredibly grateful to our partners at Sony, CBS Studios and Shemar for working so closely with us to bring it back for next season.”
CBS initially cancelled S.W.A.T. after six seasons, in May 2023 — but less than 72 hours later, the network reversed its decision and renewed the procedural for a seventh, final season.
“It’s a privilege to get to deliver more S.W.A.T. stories to our incredible fans,” executive producer/co-showrunner Shawn Ryan said Thursday. “This Season 8 pickup is a testament to our showrunner Andy Dettmann, Shemar Moore, the rest of our talented cast and our dedicated crew who continue to produce television that resonates with so many people. We’re grateful to CBS, Sony Pictures Television and CBS Studios for the opportunity.”
Added star/EP Moore: “S.W.A.T. IS BACK! BELIEVE IN MIRACLES! I am so proud of this show and the people and variables it has taken to make this show what it is and has become. I am so grateful to the fans around the world who have supported, watched, enjoyed and rooted for S.W.A.T.! It is entirely because of this support that S.W.A.T. will continue to shine!
CBS previously announced renewals for FBI (Seasons 7, 8 and 9), FBI: International (Season 4) and FBI: Most Wanted (Season 6); Fire Country (Season 3); Ghosts (Season 4); NCIS (Season 22) and NCIS: Sydney (Season 2); The Neighborhood (Season 7); and Tracker (Season 2).
Young Sheldon and Bob Hearts Abishola are currently unspooling their farewell runs, while Blue Bloods is airing the first half of a final season that will conclude in the fall.
On the scripted side, that leaves the fates of the NCIS: Hawai’i, The Equalizer, So Help Me Todd, CSI: Vegas and midseason newbie Elsbeth still TBD.
TVLine’s Renewal/Cancellation Scorecard has thusly been updated.
wow, I wonder if something will be sacrificed
NCIS Hawaii 👀
NCIS Hawaii will be fine.
That was my first thought as well: “well this news just screwed NCIS Hawaii out of a renewal” although the sources I’ve seen seem think it’s more likely that they’ll axe CSI Vegas and renew Hawaii. Apparently Vanessa Lachey has said in interviews that they’ve been ‘unofficially’ renewed.
Hawaii is horrible never watch it, no I k ow watches it. That is not acting. I think they put in LL cool J to save it. Love him but hate the show.
Nothing should be. There is plenty of room to have room for everyone. They just need to run the episodes without so many hiatuses.
They’ve already sacrificed two main characters. Which I was fine with since it was the “final” season. But it leaves us with the new wooden actors to carry on.
Could not believe they fired Street and Luca so they could bring on a wife. Totally unfair.
Also couldn’t believe CBS renewed Fire Country and cancelled SWAT and Blue Bloods, seriously?
I enjoy all three shows but SWAT & Blue Bloods are easily superior to Fire County in terms of cast and quality. That’s just my opinion, of course.
Wasn’t talking about her, I was referring to the new SWAT guy and the Chris replacement.
Cry more.
Love Blue BLOODS big mistake to end it!!!! Thank Gid you renewed SWAT now just figure out a way to bring Street Luca and Ty Harrington back!!!
Totally agree 👍
I would rather they had not cancelled Blue Bloods
Tom Selleck needs to speak up LOUDER and let his voice be heard. If they can bring SWAT back, Blue Bloods can be too!
They had a good, long, run.
Tom selleck doesn’t want it to end. He would continue
They already accidentally sacrificed Street and Luca, as they wrapped up their stories thinking this was the last season. Who knows who else ends up written out as a result of thinking this was the end. But maybe that will result in having to bring in new characters that will “freshen” the show and make CBS keep the show going longer than one more season.
They were the highest salaries after Shemar… Sadly
They could start by reducing the roles of the wives. Nichelle is annoying and the story line about Deacon and his wife having to decide who will watch the kids when they stay home is ridiculous. Cabrera and Zoe are horrible replacements. The writers appear have no clue how to develop their characters so they should get rid of them.
I should be clear I was referring to shows being sacrificed not characters (last year East New York was cancelled after SWAT got saved)
OMG, I’m thrilled!!! But there is a but, what about those characters that were sacrificed because this was the final season? That’s kind of a slap in the face to Luca and Street. They are truly missed as part of the team.
Technically they didn’t kill them off, so it’s a small possibility they both could come back. Street is only in Long Beach and Luca retired, I could see Street helping with a case and Luca being brought back to teach some training. Wishful thinking on my part I guess, lol!
That’s why I ask the question, they did not kill them off so bring them back. But that brings up another question, they thought this was a series finale so I wonder how it ends. Surely they didn’t leave it open ended thinking it was done. I’m excited now, way more than I was an hour ago, lol.
Hicks did offer Luca a job which I think was as an instructor, he could also come back as a consultant on any old cases like they did with Mumford a few times. Plus he’s still Tan’s roommate.
.
I’m sure they could have another case crossover with LB SWAT and have Street guest if Alex Russell is available too.
I agree on your ideas for ways to bring back Street and Luca.
I thought the same. Street could come back somehow like a joint mission with his SWAT-Team and Hondo’s. But I don’t know how they will include Luca. Maybe as an instructor? Don’t know still not the same. And if Deacon retires that would be a really big bummer. I’m happy about the news though, but don’t know how they will pull this of.
I REALLY hope we don’t lose Deacon. That would leave a huge whole in the team. I’ve been wondering if his retirement would be part of the series finale coming up in May so hopefully if he does retire he’ll come back in season 8.
I know!! I am happy that thr show is renewed. But I’m not happy about Luca and Street. They can bring Street back if the budget allows. But they way they wrote Luca out, he won’t be back as a team member.
im sure there are a lot of networks that wish their shows could pull in a 6.1 rating!!! congratulations to the cast and crew of SWAT
I’m happy-I love this show! But it kind of detracts from both Street and Luca’s departures. And what’ll happen with Deac’s retirement arc? Guess we’ll wait and see.
Awesome news!! I love the show!!!
😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳
WOW!!!! It’s great. And now, Blue Bloods renew for a 15th season 😁…!?
Aren’t they writing out characters since this was supposed to be the last season? Guess it saves them money and made a renewal more feasible.
What are the odds for So help me todd?
This has me worried. I will say SWAT would be a horrible fit on Thursday. We’ll have to see how Elsbeth does this week (Or you know, tonight). If it’s ratings hold up, I predict a swift renewal. Figure the Young Sheldon spinoff at 8 on Th, followed by Ghosts (its not going anywhere for at least 3-4 more years), and Elsbeth at 10. Probably keep the tonally similar Todd on at 9. Because SWAT is a great fit on Friday, where CBS has built a solid hit.
.
I too fear for Todd, but this might be more a result of the writer’s strike impacting the ability to evaluate pilots.
Or they could put Matlock on Thursdays at 9pm with Sunday lineup continuing as it is.
Not great after this
I hope this means that we’ll see Luca and Street again.
Unlikely as cast members from day one their exits are what allowed season 8 to happen.
Hard to believe that CBS made an intelligent decision!!
Now if they just would reverse their decision on Blue Bloods
They wont they took this show instead..
.
Show is not the same this season! I really miss Street and Luca. If they bring them back in some capacity then I am in. Also wonder how they will justify Deacon not retiring. As I assume he will stay on the team but but at the cost to his marriage? He and Annie had the fight a couple weeks back when he was not able to pick up their child but Annie had to on her first day back to work.
Happy about S.W.A.T. reversal. I’m still disappointed in the cancellation of “East New York”. Really liked that series.
Me too on both fronts. Would have been great to see East New York continue as well, but happy for SWAT crew nonetheless.
Awesome, I am so happy.
Great, so now bring back Street and make the wives recurring characters. So unnecessary.
Good!!!! Now let’s renew BLUE BLOODS, Forthwith!!!!!!
So very excited 😊
Love, love, love S.W.A.T ❤️
So happy to hear they are renewed again!!
Keep those seasons coming & coming!
Is this a Joke? After writing out two of the best characters. It’s a Hando- Nichal show now and this seasonwas the worse. At least let Lucas return in a supervisory position.
This is absolutely terrific news!!! Good job, CBS… Now on to Blue Bloods!
Blue bloods is an awesome show that needs to stick around for more seasons
With SWAT coming back, does that mean Blue Bloods gets an order for the back half of 2024-2025 since this was supposed to be the last season and got the 2nd half of it next fall. So all it needs is next spring, right ?
Ugh this doesn’t bode well for Elsbeth. CBS has very limited shelf space left for next season. Although, they could always move the show to paramount+. I’d actually prefer it that way.
I guess getting rid of OG actors except Hando did save the show. I wouldn’t be surprised if Jay/Decan exited by the end of this season too. I like the show but this season isn’t the same without the whole group.
But they’ve written out half the cast, with Deacon looking like he might leave. The new characters aren’t great
What a wonderful surprise to have SWAT back. It’s a great show! Now for renewal of The Equalizer and NCIS Hawaii and for some laughs Bob ❤️ Abisola.
I really enjoy Equalizer but I don’t think it will make it. Their ratings haven’t been great and they aren’t made in a cbs studio like Swat and others. We’ll see. I hope it does. But I’d prefer it on another network to be honest. CBS isn’t consistent with it. It comes on late or sometimes not at all. I like that show to be treated better. I bet Fire Country would never be late or skipped IJS.
SWAT is a Sony production (not made by CBS).
The Equalizer airs on Sunday where sports (like the NFL) air in the afternoon and sometimes run long – nothing new about that. Fridays don’t have that problem.
I understand. But I still think Equalizer gets treated like the black sheep. Like now, Equalizer won’t be back on til April 21st. That would have been a gap of 3 or 4 weeks. There’s no football, olympics, or anything stopping it from consistently coming on. I just don’t think that show gets treated right. I would prefer it on another network. But hey, I’m not making the decisions. That’s their call. I’ll just support that show for as long as they have it on that network. If Fire Country and Swat are your shows I hope you will continue to enjoy them.
I like The Equalizer as well, and I know it seems like the network is treating it as less important than other shows. There are many considerations that the network uses, all of which are above my pay grade, but to me it doesn’t seem that Equalizer is being treated any differently than CSI Vegas, which also airs on Sunday.
I was hoping CBS would get off their duff and give us another season. Leave SWAT alone.!!!!!!!
