Dr. Shaun Murphy is turning in his scalpel.
ABC announced Thursday that The Good Doctor will end with Season 7, which will premiere on a new night, Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 10/9c.
It is one of two, long-running ABC dramas confirmed to end this spring, along with Grey’s Anatomy firefighter spinoff Station 19 (which also will conclude with Season 7).
“The Good Doctor has been a once in a lifetime opportunity, but it’s time to say goodbye,” executive producers David Shore, Liz Friedman and Erin Gunn said in a joint statement. “We are incredibly proud of the work we’ve done and the message we’ve been privileged to be a part of. We look forward to giving our fantastic fans, the truly extraordinary Freddie Highmore, the rest of our talented actors (and friends), and the best crew in the business the series ending that you all deserve. Thank you, Sony; thank you, ABC; thank you all.”
Added star/executive producer Highmore: “Playing Dr. Shaun Murphy has been an immense privilege and one of the most remarkable and rewarding experiences of my life. I will always be grateful to David, Liz, and Erin as well as the hugely talented — and lovely — cast, writers and crew who made this show possible. Caring deeply is what got us here. Thank you to Sony and ABC, and to everyone who has watched along at home.”
Then, channeling his inner Dr. Murphy, he concluded, “With love from Vancouver… tequila, stat!”
The Good Doctor first bowed in 2017, and stars Highmore as autistic surgeon Shaun Murphy, who overcomes personal and professional hurdles while working at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital. Dr. Murphy married his longtime love Lea (Paige Spara) at the end of Season 5, while Season 6 culminated in the birth of their son, Steve Aaron Murphy.
Rounding out the cast for Season 7 are Richard Schiff (as Dr. Aaron Glassman), Christina Chang (as Dr. Audrey Lim), Fiona Gubelmann (as Dr. Morgan Reznick), Will Yun Lee (as Dr. Alex Park), Noah Galvin (as Dr. Asher Wolke), Bria Samone Henderson (as Dr. Jordan Allen) and Chuku Modu (as Dr. Jared Kalu).
In tandem with the news, ABC has released a farewell promo (see above). It contains highlights from the previous six seasons and culminates in a first look at the medical drama’s very last episodes. In the scene, Shaun prepares to leave for work and tells new mom Lea and their infant son Steve that he is going to miss them.
And soon, we will miss them all.
“It’s been an incredible journey,” Gubelmann wrote on Instagram Thursday. “I’m immensely grateful to all of the people who have made this one of the best experiences and gifts in my life. Thank you to our amazing crew, cast, writers, producers…. I love you all and will treasure our time together. Thank you to all of our incredible fans from all over the world who’ve taken this journey with us. You’re the reason we do this.”
Gubelmann’s on-screen boyfriend, Will Yun Lee, also reflected on The Good Doctor‘s fast-approaching end date, writing: “It’s been a beautiful ride… What a privilege it has been to play Dr. Park. Thank you to all the fans who made The Good Doctor extra special. I will miss all the cast, crew and producers I got to call family over the past six years. Farewell🧑🏻⚕️🩺❤️.”
Former cast member Antonia Thomas, who in Seasons 1-4 played Dr. Claire Browne, was among the first to comment on Lee’s post. “Congratulations on a beautiful job,” she wrote. “What an amazing run.”
ABC previously attempted to piggyback on the success of The Good Doctor with a planted spinoff, The Good Lawyer, which aired in March 2023. The backdoor pilot earned an average grade of “A-,” while 90 percent of TVLine readers voted in favor of a series pickup. Alas, ABC passed on the legal drama in November.
Let’s hear it, Good Doctor fans: How are you feeling about ABC’s decision to end the medical drama with Season 7? Sound off in Comments.
NO! I don’t want it to end! The Good Doctor is a brilliantly written and acted show, and the only thing on TV worth watching.
I will greatly miss this wonderful cast and show.
I am absolutely heartbroken that my favorite show is ending. I so look forward to it restarting every season. So bummed.
Sad to hear this, but I’m sure the actors, directors, etc are ready to move onto something new. Can’t wait to see what Freddie does next, I’m a huge fan of his work !!
I’ll be very interested in Highmores next project.
He has knocked at least 2 roles out of the park (i.e. Psycho, Good Doctor)
So sad it is one of the best shows on TV hopefully we will see the performers in other shows again.
Nooooo nooooooo my kids love this show as I do it’s a good wholesome show
another goods show ending. probably going to rehash another crap show from the past. sadly, writers can not come up with anything original anymore.
fallout from the strikes?
SO SAD!
Though I absolutely loved this show and all the characters, I would rather see it go than to turn boring and mediocre like Greys Anatomy. I will enjoy it for this last season and am anxious for a good ending!
No… Don’t go!
If this is the last season, then Freddie Highmore better get is well-deserved, long-overdue Emmy!!!!
No, No, No. Do not cancel the Good Doctor. It’s the best show on the air. I just love it and would like to see more of it.
So sad that this incredible show is ending. Everything about it was perfect. Freddie Highmore is a stellar actor, I hope they end the season with all our questions answered, I have come to care about all the characters and I hope the writers do them all justice. Thank you for providing us with excellent entertainment ABC.
Sad, but not surprising. Shows that are as popular as this one is tend to become more expensive as time goes on & seven seasons means higher costs all around & not many of the cast want to continue when contracts are up for negociation as they often want to explore new things. Networks have to make it worth their while to stick around, which can mean more money or other perks that can be just as expensive. Plus, the new time slot can be an indicator when the network wants to ‘kill’ a show. Each network has a ‘death’ slot and ABC’s has been Tuesdays at 10pm for a very long time now.
Whatever the cast does after, I hope it’s something they want to do & enjoy. I also hope that with this news, the showrunners & writing staff can come up with an ending that does the show and fans justice. ABC has at least given us as fans & the show the time needed to do that, unlike other shows in the past have had.
I love that show. I will miss it.somebody made a very bad decision.
I don’t understand why they always take off the best programs on TV. You replace them with shows that no one wants to watch like the game shows or shows that are not fit to watch. I will truly miss the good doctor. I wish peacock or one of the other networks would pick up the good doctor. Such a great loss we will miss you.
I love this show and the message it portrays for Autism. I will be sad to see it go almost as much as Station 19.
I’m sad about this news but I get the reasons for making this decision. The Good Doctor has been a wonderful show, with stellar acting and great storylines.
Wonderful show. Wonderful cast. Excellent story line. I am sad to hear the show is ending. Ugh
I am not sad that the show is ending, but instead am happy that we will get a proper ending this way.
Great show, great concept. Very poor decision to end a show that has all the potential to be more innovative and endearing in future years.
I feel like it’s time, the show has run its course.
I am going to miss The Good Doctor. What a fab show. Freddie Highmore is an extraordinary actor. ‘I’ve admired him since I saw him in August Rush. I hope to see him again in something as equally extraordinary.
I love the show and I’m going to hate to see it go… Do not kill anybody off this last season!!!
