The Rookie will continue reporting for duty, TVLine has learned, now that the light ABC procedural has been renewed for Season 7.
TVLine’s Renewal/Cancellation Scorecard has thusly been updated (and we now have a new frontrunner in our annual Keep or Cut poll!)
Season-to-date, the Nathan Fillion-led ensemble series has been averaging more than 6 million total viewers and a 0.6 demo rating (with Live+7 playback), down just a hair from its Season 5 numbers — and while in a tougher time slot, now serving as the “hammock” between Tuesday’s new leadoff hitter, Will Trent, and the final season of The Good Doctor.
Out of the half-dozen dramas that ABC has aired this TV season, The Rookie ranks No. 3 in both measures (trailing only 9-1-1 and Will Trent in audience, and 9-1-1 and Grey’s Anatomy in the demo).
The Rookie, currently on a(nother) break until April 30, has four episodes left to air during this strikes-shortened season, leading to a finale that cast member Eric Winter told TVLine is, as is tradition, “big.”
“We always throw everything into a finale,” Sgt. Tim Bradford’s portrayer shared with a laugh. “There are a lot of reveals, and as far as Tim and Lucy (played by Melissa O’Neil)” — who when last we tuned in went through an abrupt and ugly break-up — “they get some fun stuff together” involving “another great action sequence.
“Everybody’s out for the team and supporting each other,” Winter continued, “and it ends in a really nice way. And as far as Tim and Lucy, it leaves a nice sort of, I wouldn’t say closure or a guarantee of anything, but it leaves it in a place where there’s stuff to talk about” in Season 7.

Good News
Indeed.
Yay! It’s on of my favorite shows I’m so glad. Now please renew the Equalizer then I’ll be really happy
Excellent. It was one of the few shows I still needed to be renewed. Now give me a NCIS Hawaii renewal.
Kinda think this was a given but always good to see the official announcement. Now if they could just get back to a good balance of cops working cases vs soap opera drama. They used to be great at it, not sure where it went wrong.
Is that a baton in your pocket, or are you just happy to get this news?
Arrest me.. make it sexy 🎵🎶🎵..one of the funniest moments all season!! Has that band been in an earlier episode as well?
Yeah, I watched this show from the beginning.
That’s unfortunate.
The show has really lost its reason to exist with John Nolan now being a training officer, and is now exceedingly formulaic. And that’s when it’s not delivering godawful episodes that flippantly deal with people murdered in the show. (Looking at honeymoon episode in particular).
Agreed. I stopped watching after the captain was killed and Nolan’s original training partner. I watch a little bit of the next season but the show just went downhill, and I have not watched it since. Beside that, this just seems to be the Nathan Fillion show; but of course, with his showrunner friend what do you expect
Why is it unfortunate? I’ll never understand why some people root for a show to fail or be canceled. You know you could just NOT WATCH IT! Why root for something to go away that many people enjoy? Are you that miserable in your real life that you want to make others unhappy? It’s very easy to just change the channel.
with so many tv shows up iin the air and some coming back when they were cancelled. is there any chance that Blue Blood has a chance of coming back? I mean SWAT cancelled last year then renewed for one year. then cancelled now renewed…………………………
The final season of Blue Bloods is already being split between this spring and next fall. Given it is a big family show (making it harder to replace characters compared to some other aging dramas), it’s getting expensive and is not very likely. See also TVLine’s recent post about CBS having a lot of content for next season.
Can’t be that much more expensive than NCIS
While a renewal seems unlikely, it would be weird if CBS doesn’t consider a spin-off of Blue Bloods given its popularity.
Most of the people who watch are senior citizens and the networks don’t care about that demo. Blue Bloods especially is known for its audience being 60 and over. I don’t see a spinoff.
I am pleased about this renewal.
Me too!
This is the best news!!! Let’s go!
The show stopped being good about three seasons ago. I don’t mind a little bit of relationship issues on the show but it’s way too much. Get back to being a cop show.
Awesome. Waited for this. Now we need Chenford back together. And do you think we get to revisit the Boyd case? The mastermind behind the attack is still out there. Or did I miss something? Maybe it’s the shady therapist. Would like to know your ideas.
I am happy for the good news and look forward to another season. This just made my day!
I agree that the writing has kind of run out of steam to some degree, but I’m still glad it’s been renewed. It’s an enjoyable show with a great cast.
Now we need NCIS Hawaii
I’m glad that ‘The Rookie’ got renewed; maybe they can fix the Chenford mess they made last week!
Yeah!!!
Yay, more Harper and Lopez!
This will be interesting to see how Nathan Fillion will juggle his commitment to this TV Series and his commitment to playing Guy Gardner Green Lantern in the upcoming slate of DC Universe projects the character will be required to appear in.
The show has a strong enough ensemble that Nolan could be “off-duty” for an episode, if needed. And I say this as a Nathan Fillion fan.
His first appearance will be a small one for the new up coming Superman movie. They will be done filming before the start filming season 7 of The Rookie. As for a stand alone G.L. movie, that depends on how Superman plays out and if it gets a green light, no pun intended, it is at least 2 to 3 years out. Should have no bearing on The Rookie season 7 and if a season 8 is a go, should not have a conflict.
But they’re working on a Supergirl Movie, Peacemaker Season 2, a Waller Series, and Batman: The Brave and the Bold Movie so Fillion is subject to recall to appear in any of those projects as Guy Gardner Green Lantern. Since James Gunn and Peter Safran are promising no stand-ins, it will necessitate Fillion to come in and film his bits accordingly.
what is it with networks?? the new series plays, stops for a week or so,
comes back, once and gone again for 1-2 weeks. are they purposely trying to kijj the program?????
They’re stretching out the limited number of episodes post-strike, a lot of shows are airing like this, annoying for sure but it is what it is.

How many episodes were ordered for season 7? Will it be a 22 episode season renewal? Or a shortened season?
Far, far too early to ask.
Yes!!
Yay! We need mor dramedy-leaning shows.
Love this show! I’m so happy to hear this news!
This show has it all!
YAY!!
Great news!! Wonderful cast, interesting storylines. There are so many cops shows but this show is original and different from the rest.
