Both The Rookie and Will Trent, which air their finales next Tuesday, May 21, won’t return with their new seasons until 2025. But here’s why that’s a good-ish thing for fans of either show.
ABC’s fall schedule for the 2024-25 season features a Tuesday line-up of Dancing With the Stars leading into the new drama High Potential. Neither Will Trent nor The Rookie are anywhere to be seen, held as they both are for “midseason.”
The good news, though, is that once the two dramas return, they’ll do so in non-stop runs (of 18 episodes each, TVLine hears).
“The Rookie and Will Trent are two of the cornerstones of our schedule,” Craig Erwich, president, Disney Television Group, told TVLine when explaining the decision to hold both for midseason. “The Rookie is an amazing story, where at this point in its life cycle [six seasons in] it continues to grow. We see not just the current season but past seasons drive a tremendous amount of viewing on Hulu.
“And Will Trent is probably one of the bigger breakout dramas of the last two years,” Erwich continued. “It felt like the best way to platform those shows for success was to launch them in January, when we have this huge promotional platform in New Years Rockin’ Eve as well as college sports and Christmas programming, and also to give these shows an uninterrupted run.
“They’re going to go straight through,” with no breaks/reruns, Erwich reiterated, “and that kind of momentum of original episodes week-in and week-out is just a very powerful engine for both of these shows.”
They always say shows will be uninterrupted and then they schedule weeks off.
I can’t recall even 1 example of a network saying something will run uninterrupted and then having weeks off. Can you provide some examples?
This Year they Scheduled The State Of The Union and March Madness and it had to interrupt some of the shows coming back to CBS…
Well …… the State of the Union happens every year and so does March Madness. The networks don’t schedule these events.
Will Trent and the Rookie is on ABC, March Madness is always aired on CBS.
‘Lost’ was promoted as running without breaks for several seasons yet always had a few off weeks.
I never seen a series not skip a week or more during a season. All of them do that.
It’s 18 episodes from January to May , it isn’t even possible to take weeks off
Actually it’s possible. Just means they will have to double up if something comes up, and they don’t air it.
That’s great news, I agree. One of the best things about 24 (RIP) was it ran every week straight. I wish more shows did that.
I can’t wait. I love both of these shows.
Such a long stretch between seasons makes me forget about them and lose interest. Happened a lot during Covid. Many shows I never returned too.
Yes, it’s good to have uninterrupted run. But still it’s their high profile shows, next to Grey’s Anatomy. And not to have it in the fall. Weird. When you want to get back to normal with viewers.
Wtf what a bunch of bull
Phooey – I am not pleased to hear I have to wait till 2025 for the new Will Trent episodes. I miss the old excitement of having your favorites return in September. This feels too much like a good show is being flipped off for lesser ones. Not happy at all about this news.
How do you expect viewers to remember the plots & characters a year later? There is so much content out there, we’re liable to move on. Or simply blow off those series. Actors & writers were on strike for 4 to 6 months (I support unions), go back to work for a few months & then go on hiatus for 8 months. What gives??
While transmission goes on hiatus for that long, producing the shows does not. To make 18 episodes rather than 22 to finish in May it means maybe going back maybe only six weeks later.
Go on youtube dot com and look at clips, look at the sites for these shows and see if THEY have clips. Rewatch an episode or two. Do a little leg work, Athena. You want to watch high quality shows you have to actually give them time to make them – right. They don’t make these shows in 6 days, esp not if you want them to be GOOD.
Lol what a sheep you’re
I watch The Rookie on Hulu so I can ff thru the stuff I don’t care about, like the current baby drama. But having uninterrupted seasons is great news. Like a lot of other viewers the 2 weeks on 3 weeks off schedule is annoying. NBC should take note.
It’s total B.S. we already had to deal with a strike shortened season! Now this really? How about they hold Dancing till mid season! We can’t stand that garbage! Thank God for other networks! Because we definitely won’t be watching! Thanks ABC for killing another great show like Will TRENT!
So true. They try to force feed garbage reality shows to us , but when a charming character driven show like Will Trent could be available within a decent interval , they stow it away like an unwanted gift.
Some very entitled responses in this thread. Take some memory supplements and watch the recap or read it on Wikipedia before diving into the new season. Almost all streaming shows are like this.
People can’t be bothered and then they scream at the networks for not spoon feeding them, and at writers for needing time to write. It’s silly and childish. They want to go back to the days of 26 meh episodes a year where almost nothing changes and every episode is the same. Yawn.
Its called re-watchable, those 26 meh eps were re-watchable because they were simple stand alone stories for the most part.
The episodes of shows now are basically chapters in a novel. You really cant just watch an episode or two at any given time because they are part of a bigger story.
I don’t see how that is a good thing in the long run. That breaks the momentum of the show (The rookie) doesn’t it ?
Such a bummer.
Agreed. How is this presented as good news ? The good news was that Will Trent was renewed. Having to inexplicably wait till next year is very unwelcome news.
Did anyone fall for this excuse? Who still watches Dancing with the Stars? No one I know. So when you hold off shows for so long, people lose interest then don’t care when they come back on. What happened to the days of doing 22 episodes? This is a ridiculous idea in the year that had fewer episodes because of the strike.
Already upset with CBS, now angry with ABC since those are the only two shows I watch on ABC (since they cancelled Station 19 for no good reason). I can see why everyone watches the streaming shows and giving up on the networks.
It is a good thing. I’ll be able to watch something else on Tuesdays in the fall on another channel!
I wonder if The Rookie’s move to midseason has anything to do with Nathan Fillion filming for James Gunn’s Superman as well.
WtH dancing with the Stars? Thats so fake , does anybody watch that ?
They lost all class and reason with the addition of Tyra Banks…could NOT get it back…agree with you 100%
This if full of b***
Sounds good, these are 2 of my favs, knowing g what the plan is makes me feel like it will be worth the wait!!
Very disappointed but glad both shows are coming back.
Very sorry to see So Help Me Todd has been canceled Really loved that show!!!
I will miss the Rookie and Trent. Why must we wait so long for a new show to return. It was a hit so keep it going or people might forget to watch again!
That is great! The Rookies and Will Trent are my two favorite shows!
I don’t get it. I don’t want to watch game shows and the tired dancing with the stars that is so over.
At least it’s 18 and not 13, but “[another!] shortened season” is the sadder news than “delayed until midseason”, IMHO.
So happy it will be a straight run! The two or three episodes than two weeks of no episodes was getting annoying.
Love Will Trent!
I really did not like Rookie FBI Neici Nash did not fit that at all. It was a good idea, just bad casting.
