Well, HBO must be happy with how new writer/director Issa López handled True Detective: The crime anthology has been renewed for a fifth season, TVLine has learned, with López set to return as showrunner. (López has also signed an overall deal with the network.)
Season 4, dubbed True Detective: Night Country and starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, wrapped up its six-episode run this week. (Read our season finale recap here.) Night Country has now become the most-watched season of True Detective, per HBO, with 12.7 million viewers across all platforms.
“Issa López is that one-of-a-kind, rare talent that speaks directly to HBO’s creative spirit,” HBO drama boss Francesca Orsi said in a statement. “She helmed True Detective: Night Country from start to finish, never once faltering from her own commendable vision, and inspiring us with her resilience both on the page and behind the camera. Alongside Jodie and Kali’s impeccable performances, she’s made this installation of the franchise a massive success, we are so lucky to have her as part of our family.”
López added a statement as well: “From conception to release, Night Country has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life. HBO trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of True Detective with [HBO boss] Casey [Bloys], Francesca and the whole team is a dream come true. I can’t wait to go again.”
True Detective debuted on HBO in 2014, with each season telling a new story with a new cast. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson starred in Season 1, with Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams taking over in Season 2 and Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff in Season 3. Nic Pizzolatto created the series and oversaw the first three seasons, but stepped back in Season 4, with López taking over as writer and director.
Pizzolatto has been openly critical of Season 4 on social media, with López responding: “I believe that every storyteller has a very specific, peculiar, and unique relation to the stories they create, and whatever his reactions are, he’s entitled to them. That’s his prerogative. I wrote this with profound love for the work he made and love for the people that loved it.”

Hopefully, HBO doesn’t rush her to do the next season like they did with Season 2. Let it come out when it’s ready.
Chances of them learning from that mistake seem slim
Honestly this the first season where I wish we could keep the same characters or give them a spin off keep True Detective Night Country Going but I know it won’t happen. I’m happy to see Issa do a new spin on a new story she did phenomenal on season 4.
I love true detectives season four with the women being the main characters in the story I thought it was beautifully done. I thought the cinematography was great. It’s all a great story from all different sides and I’m glad that they have renewed it for another season with Isa being the showrunner baby I I think we got something going on here. I love it. I love it and I’m glad I’m continue to watch it.
Great! But with the way it airs, it’ll be 2030 or 2040 by the time Season 5 hits.
Hell ya!!! ❤️🇨🇦
Yes indeed
Poor Nic, his criticism of S4 didn’t work in his favor. but it did work in Issa Lopez’s favor.
Great news! Night Country was an outstanding season.
is he mad her name is Lopez and had a higher rating season than him? Sad the karen of true detective
Jodie Foster said herself whe would love to do more work like this season. Whatever the plan, she is an amazing addition to the stories.
Is this a joke? I actually cant tell if I’m getting gaslit this hard or if everyone is delusional, this season was some of the worst television I have ever seen.
Your post 👎🏾
Maybe critically acclaimed television is not your thing.
It’s okay.
Nah i just like watching shows with sensible plot lines. Nice try though
I think you meant simple plot lines.
No Mikey because Ive been wondering the exact same thing with these comments 😂 maybe they are bots hired by HBO or Lopez herself because nothing about the renewal makes sense. Every person ive talked to in real life couldnt even get past episode 4 and thought it was an embarrassment that they even called it True Detective. Ive yet to find a real person that enjoyed that trash heap.
The show had me locked in for 5 episodes and then the last was just so disappointing. Still better than season 2, but nowhere close to the first season.
Couldn’t agree more.
Agreed. It’s clear that there is an online contingent of people who are all-in on praising this show for reasons not related to its quality. I did not watch any previous season of True Detective but was genuinely excited about this season. The first episode was underwhelming; the second one held my interest so I kept watching. In the end, after a truly insufferable finale, I hated that I gave this series a chance.
For real tho, check out season 1 and 3. Those are phenomenal stories with great writing and actors. Even 2 isnt that bad, but my god 4 is a disaster.
Wonderful news! Eat it, Pizzolatto.
Season 4 was an absolute mess with more plot holes than storylines that made sense. Issa is awful.
This is great news – I look forward to another season with Issa Lopez as showrunner!
Love this series also the format with changing lead actors watched every eposode and cannot wait for season %
I have wanted to watch this series since before it started. I’ve been prevented so far because my wife doesn’t want to watch it because,: “It all happens in the dark.” I’ve suggested she just watch the first epsiode to see if she likes it but that’s a definite, “NO”.
Excellent news, this renewal made my day really. I hope Issa López picks up a setting that is as haunting as the long night of Alaska was for Season 5.
Hopefully, HBO doesn’t rush her to do the next season like they did with Season 2. Let it come out when it’s ready!
I really liked the view of life in northern Alaska.
funniest thing about this, is seeing the same comment from two different people. Person forgot they were signed into their burner. Todd and Nuis… lmao.
That being said… the first two episodes were good, and the penultimate was good. The final episode was all over the place. and just ruined some good stoyrline. Pryor Jr. should have been the killer.
People pulling out the imdb rating, like this season was better than 1. season 1 is possibly the best season of tv history.
Season 4 is my first of the series. I mainly tuned in for Jodie Foster, but I enjoyed the season. Now, I’ll go back and watch the earlier seasons I never got around to when they first aired.
Agree wholeheartedly with Nic that season four was indeed “a hot mess.” Hope season five makes amends.
Great don’t stop now your on a winner.
