Usher is set to perform the halftime show at Super Bowl 58, which kicks off on Feb. 11, 2024, from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nev., and airs on CBS.
The NFL announced the news on Sunday, calling Usher a “generation defining” artist.
“It’s an honor of a lifetime to finally check a Super Bowl performance off my bucket list,” Usher said in a statement. “I can’t wait to bring the world a show unlike anything else they’ve seen from me before. Thank you to the fans and everyone who made this opportunity happen. I’ll see you real soon.”
The R&B artist has won eight Grammy awards throughout his career and sold more than 80 million records worldwide. He also made a splash on TV as a judge on NBC’s The Voice in Seasons 4 and 6.
Earlier this year, Rihanna performed her own memorable Super Bowl 57 halftime performance. The pop icon not only played a medley of popular hits including “Rude Boy,” “Work,” and “Umbrella,” but also announced her second pregnancy. Her performance earned an average TVLine reader grade of “C+.”
Other recent Super Bowl halftime show performers include Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar (which earned an average TVLine reader grade of “B-“); The Weeknd; Jennifer Lopez and Shakira; Maroon 5 (ft. Travis Scott and Big Boi); Justin Timberlake; Lady Gaga, Coldplay; and Katy Perry.
I approve of this. 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Nothing against Usher. I think he will make a great Halftime show, but I guess this squashes the rumors of an all-boyband Halftime show. I was kinda looking forward to that.
Me, too!!!!
saaaaaaaaame, disappointed
What happened to all the people wanting Aerosmith or Rolling Stones.? Someone legendary.
They have to balance appealing to a broad audience. Current artists wouldn’t work for people over 30. On the other hand, people whose heyday was fifty years ago wouldn’t work por those under 40. Someone who hit big in the 1990s/2000s is in that sweet spot that they are still someone a 20 year-old is familiar with, but a 60 year-old can recognise the hits.
Because people over 30 don’t listen to current music? Hahahahaha
I’m not saying that none of them do. But a Billie Eilish, BTS or Shawn Mendes wouldn’t really be that much of a draw in cases like this. When you see the tours making all the money in the world, it’s usually not people who have five years under their belt. When you think about Beyoncé or Taylor Swift beating all touring records, they have been around since 1997 and 2006, the sweet 1990s/2000s spots I mentioned, where you have had the time to build a legacy and catalogue, but you still are relevant to young people.
NSync and Britney Spears would disagree with this
Britney made a lot of money in her last residency. NSync simply haven’t toured. and both acts would kill at Superbowl. I just don’t think they were interested.
Jay-Z’s Roc Nation has a long-term partnership to produce the halftime show for the NFL, so expect a lot of R&B and rap for awhile. I don’t expect they’d go for the older rock. That said, I’m still hoping one day for a Weird Al halftime show.
Looking forward to his performance! Good choice!!
He’s going to Usher in a great Halftime Show! 😝
Usher is a boring choice, but it will probably be a fine performance. It just isn’t very exciting.
Solid choice, if a bit safe.
lol people downvoting my comment. Let me know why I’m wrong about this – I’m always open for reasonable discourse.
I think people just like to down vote. They down vote the most random things that really don’t need and up or down vote but there they go and do it anyway LOL
Probably true. Oh well.
I have No problem with Usher. I want to know When will the powers that be have a Country Music artist perform at this Halftime show? Someone like Tim McGraw or Luke Bryan for example.
They had a country show packed with legit stars in 1994 and it paled in comparison to the numbers Michael Jackson did the year before. That’s why the NFL has chased mainstream acts, since country is still largely considered niche. Though I and others have tried arguing that the current music landscape is so segmented that there’s great reward in going for a oft-brand choice (the Shakira/Lopez show was widely mocked here, but guess which show has had the longest revenue tail and introduced Bad Bunny to a global audience?).
Since 1994, Country Music has grown leaps and bounds. Country music might have a one time be considered a niche. Not anymore You might not be a fan, but Country Music is a True and Real segment of music.Give it a try.
I think that most people who listen to counrty music already watch the Superbowl, anyway. When you have Madonna or Katy Perry, you have people who have no idea what the rules of the game are also watching. He he.
If they really wanted to pop ratings globally and grab that younger demo? Forget country music. Why not go with K-Pop while it’s still hot? Get BTS to reunite or bring in BlackPink.
But if they’re only concerned with the US demo… well, why not country music? It isn’t my cup of tea but I don’t think Luke Bryan would be a bad choice. But it’s a moot point at this juncture.
Zzzz
YES! I APPROVE THIS CHOICE!!!
Last year, I didn’t think I was going to enjoy it but it was really good now USHER. He’s going to bring down the stadium!!!!
And to think the first time I saw Usher perform was on the Jenny Jones Show, and now he’s headlining the Super Bowl – wow!
Eminem should do a halftime show.
They did a 90s hip hop show a couple years ago. Let’s do a 90s country show. Just imagine the show kicking off with Shania Twain singing “Let’s go girls”
It’s a safe choice. Unless the social media miners dig up something he said 20 years ago in an attempt to embarrass and get him “canceled”.
