The Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s top crime solver has secured a spot on ABC‘s 2024-25 primetime lineup.
Will Trent has been renewed for Season 3 at the Alphabet network, TVLine has learned. The pickup comes just five episodes into the crime drama’s sophomore run.
Will Trent opened Season 2 — and christened an earlier Tuesday time slot — with 4.8 million total viewers (in Live+Same Day), up sharply from its freshman average to easily mark a series high. In three out of the four episodes since, the series has matched its demo high rating of 0.4, and its March 5 outing set a new audience high of more than 4.8 million viewers.
Out of the five dramas that ABC has aired this TV season, Will Trent ranks No. 2 in audience (trailing only 9-1-1) and third in the demo (behind 9-1-1 and Grey’s Anatomy).
Based on Karin Slaughter’s best-selling novels and led by TVLine Performer of the Year finalist Ramón Rodríguez, the hour-long drama centers on Special Agent Will Trent of the GBI. Having been “abandoned at birth and endured a harsh coming-of-age in Atlanta’s overwhelmed foster care system,” Will now uses his “unique point of view in the pursuit of justice and has the highest clearance rate in the GBI,” according to the official logline.
In addition to Rodríguez, the ensemble includes Erika Christensen (as Angie Polaski), Iantha Richardson (as Faith Mitchell), Jake McLaughlin (as Michael Ormewood), Sonja Sohn (as Amanda Wagner) and Bluebell the Chihuahua (as Will’s sweater-clad, canine companion Betty).
Will Trent joins a growing list of ABC renewals. The network previously committed to more 9-1-1 (renewed for Season 8), Abbott Elementary (renewed for Season 4) and Grey’s Anatomy (renewed for Season 21) — all of which will return during the 2024-25 TV season.
New episodes of Will Trent air Tuesdays at 8/7c on ABC (and stream next day on Hulu).
I love this show. What’s with the many early renewal this year? something going on?
I’m not sure they are really that early. It is April. A lot of shows start getting renewed in April most years. It just feels off because the season didn’t start until February.
Even this article says “just five episodes into the crime drama’s sophomore run” but five episodes is halfway through the season as there’s only 10.
Yeah, not unusual at all for shows that are sure bets and produced in-house; shows that wrap earlier sometimes also get an early nod (not as many this year with the strike but NBC’s Found & Irrational both got nods back in November!). The ones produced elsewhere or with complicated cast contracts (see The Conners) can take longer; bubble shows also won’t be as early if they are lucky enough to get renewed. But Abbott Elementary was renewed Feb. 10th this year; Ghosts and Fire Country got nods from CBS March 12th; five of NBC’s other procedurals got renewals in late March. Last year, Will Trent was renewed on April 18th so just a touch later but Grey’s Anatomy, renewed yesterday, was renewed slightly earlier on March 24th. The old CW sometimes announced the bulk of theirs in January. Lots of factors, but nothing to worry about with it the timing in this case :) My guess is The Rookie gets renewed too and they slot the delayed High Potential in-between them, but we’ll see. Will Trent is doing just fine both in the ratings and creatively though :)
Probably the biggest renewal surprise. I know ABC has always been the more quirky lighthearted when it comes to cop shows so this was a shock still its ratings have not been breakout but they are consistent guess they wanted to fill the roster for the next season at least.
Surprise?? Did you miss this paragraph??? “Out of the five dramas that ABC has aired this TV season, Will Trent ranks No. 2 in audience (trailing only 9-1-1) and third in the demo (behind 9-1-1 and Grey’s Anatomy).” That’s also not counting 7-day, Hulu, etc.
Fantastic news!!
This is the best news of the day!!! I can’t say it enough, but this was one of the best surprises when it originally premiered in the mid season. I love the cast and hope for even more seasons to come.
I love this show! So, glad that this show is renewed.
Well of course it got renewed – didn’t occur to me that they wouldn’t. With all the networks hemorrhaging viewers ABC would be nuts to cancel it although they have done so many dumb things over the years.🙄
FINALLY, someone made the right call!! Outstanding program.
So well deserved! Now can we get a Cricket spin off and Young cop Amanda & Evelyn spin off!
I am so happy they renewed WT. I love RR as an actor and he plays WT very well.
Yay! Our house loves Betty (and Will)
Will Trent is a great show. Last night’s episode was awesome. Next stop the Emmys!!
Thank you, #badbitchbetty 🖤🖤🖤
Yes! Will Trent is definitely in my top 5 favorite shows, so glad it has been renewed.
Hooray for more Will Trent!
I loved the show in season 1. Right now, I feel that have fallen into that trap of needing to have a genius supercriminal each week. I’d rather see more routine cases. And get Angie and Will back together.
Yes!
Yeah! Wonderful news. I love this show.
I love Will Trent. This is wonderful news!
Woohoo! Great show!
Hallelujah!!!!
I love this show and cast. Glad for the early renewal.
Good to hear. Great show with a likable cast of characters.
I was a huge fan of Monk and this kind of harkens back to Monk a little bit.
Oh thank God! This is one of the best & smartest shows on TV!! Love the realness of the characters with all their flaws. The story lines and the histories of the characters are all so compelling! Love this show!
I love Will Trent to me he is the Denzel Washington of Mainstream Tuesday Night
Love Will Trent. His unique way of looking at things and his obvious genius make the show so interesting.
