X-Men ‘97 is off to a turbulent start.
Series creator Beau DeMayo has been fired ahead of the animated Disney+ show’s Wednesday, March 20 debut, TVLine has confirmed.
DeMayo had finished his duties as head writer for Seasons 1 and 2 before his abrupt dismissal from the project, and he was expected to attend a premiere event this Wednesday. But according to The Hollywood Reporter, who broke the story, his work email was deactivated, staff was informed he was no longer involved and his Instagram account — which he used to keep fans up to date on the show — was deleted.
TVLine has also reached out to DeMayo’s rep for comment.
X-Men ’97, a sequel to the 1990s classic X-Men: The Animated Series, was first announced at Disney+ Day 2021 and picks up right where its predecessor left off.
Taking viewers back to that iconic era, the show follows The X-Men, a band of mutants who “use their uncanny gifts to protect a world that hates and fears them, are challenged like never before, forced to face a dangerous and unexpected new future,” per the official synopsis.
The cast includes Cal Dodd reprising his original series role as Wolverine, along with Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, George Buza as Beast, Lenore Zann as Rogue and Adrian Hough as Nightcrawler.
Rounding out the ensemble are Ray Chase as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, JP Karliak as Morph, AJ LoCascio as Gambit, Holly Chou as Jubilee, Isaac Robinson-Smith as Bishop and Matthew Waterson as Magneto.
Additionally, Theo James (The White Lotus) will voice a mystery character, per EW.com.
DeMayo’s TV writing credits include The Witcher, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Moon Knight and The Originals.
No mention of “creative differences”, his work email was deactivated, AND he deleted his social media?
Methinks some skeletons will soon make their way out of DeMayo’s closet.
Whatever the reason is, it must be real BAD for it to play out like this… oof
He either got #MeToo’d or said something in support of Palestinians
Workplace sexual something, I bet.
Well, not heard a lot of good about the show, however as a fan of the original I am still going to at least watch and see if I liked it.
As for he’s dismissal, well until we are given an accrual reason , I not going to comment to much on it. Somethings are just untenable, other things such as a political difference to me is not a good enough reason. Still as said, until we know, it pointless I guess to speculate.
No one loves X-Men more than Beau DeMayo. If you followed him on Instagram, you know he loved the comic with everything he had.. All this speculation is disgusting.
It’s unlikely that the reason for his firing was that he didn’t love X-Men enough.
yeah, that’s exactly what I was implying. ::eye roll::
ooh theo james as mr sinister?
From the way its being handled and his “silence is golden” pinned tweet, I get the impression that he’s walked away with some kind of settlement payoff.
