It’s official: Young Sheldon is coming to an end.
The Big Bang Theory prequel will kick off its seventh and final season on Thursday, Feb. 15 (CBS, 8/7c) and conclude with a one-hour series finale on May 16. (For cast reactions, click here.)
“As a prequel to one of the biggest comedies, Young Sheldon proved lightning can strike twice,” said CBS entertainment president Amy Reisenbach said in a statement Tuesday. “It set itself apart with a remarkable cast that felt like a family from the first moment we saw them on screen and brought characters to life with unique heartfelt stories that drew audiences in from the start. We extend a sincere thank you to executive producers Chuck Lorre, Steve Molaro and Steve Holland and the entire writing and producing teams for six wonderful seasons. We look forward to seeing their final season unfold and giving it a proper send off with the best episodes yet for their fans to enjoy.”
Added Lorre, Molaro and Holland: “Being able to tell the origin of Sheldon Cooper, and expanding the story to include the entire Cooper family has been a wonderful experience. We are grateful to our fans for embracing this chapter of the Coopers these past six seasons, and on behalf of the entire Young Sheldon family, we’re excited to share this final season with you.”
Holland previously told TVLine that Season 7 of the Eye network’s top-rated sitcom could be its last. “We’ve certainly started to talk about it,” the EP said in March. “There are certainly things we know we want to hit next season, and there are certain things where, if it’s the end versus if it’s just [another season], those things might be different.”
Assuming the prequel’s narrative keeps at a steady pace, Sheldon will turn 14 in Season 7 — the age at which, per Big Bang’s previously established timeline, the future Nobel Prize winner moves from Medford, Texas, to Pasadena, Calif., to begin his graduate studies at the California Institute of Technology.
That same year, Sheldon’s older brother Georgie — who recently put a ring on Mandy’s finger — marries for the first time, and family patriarch George meets his maker, setting up Young Sheldon for a bittersweet sendoff not unlike early ’90s classic The Wonder Years. But time will tell if the spinoff remains true to canon. As Holland previously warned TVLine, “just because [something happened on Big Bang] doesn’t mean it’s a story [our narrator] has to tell.”
The Young Sheldon news comes as Lorre and Warner Bros. are readying a second Big Bang spinoff for streaming service Max — though Lorre recently said that development is still in the “prenatal” stage.

I wonder if The Conners will pull the trigger as well
They better not! I want more especially losing another Comedy. Keep them around. We didn’t get a Halloween episode this year!
I hope so, or fire all the current writers. One or the other will be good by me.
I wouldn’t be shocked
Even before the strike I assumed this & the connors would be announcing final seasons
The Conners should have been gone years ago. The most disappoint sitcom on TV today. What a waste of talent such as John Goodman, Laurie Metcalfe, and Katey Sagal.
Hope they give a great send off
Sad, Loved this show. Will miss it when its gone, but looking forward to seeing how they wrap things up.
Reruns are on no need to be sad.
Hopefully, this new sitcom Lorre is keeping mum about will be called “Young CeCe.” ;)

I am sad to see this end, but that sadness could be alleviated with a spin off of this spin off. It has been done before, if you consider Maude was a spin off of All in the Family, and Good Times was a spin off of Maude. No reason this couldn’t be the new millennium’s equivalent.
The possible spin off is going to be the second from The Big Bang Theory, not Young Sheldon. So, I doubt it will be about Georgie and Mandy’s daughter. It would be about someone from The Big Bang Theory.
I hope the finale happens the day before George dies. That way we never have to see it.
Love this idea!
Ditto!
That would be a great way to do it. Consistent with the Big Bang Theory and spares us the pain.
Make it like The Wonder Years with a voiceover of “Dad died later that year, I moved to California….”
Agree! I know the death occurs according to TBBT, but I’d see them off as a family without this event having happened. George became one of my favorite characters of the show, not at all how adult Sheldon remembered him.
Regardless of whether the max show is a sequel to YS or not, I could see the Coopers being made. Sheldon would NOT be a regular. He could guest star from time to time, but the show would follow Georgie, Missy, Meemaw, and Mary. Maybe jump 6-12 months after George’s death and show the challenges Georgie and his family are facing.
The show was one of 3 shows, I actually looked forward to watching. Now there will be 1 less show to watch.
We’ve figured it was coming. Still so sad to see. This cast is amazing. I’d love to see further adventures in Medford.
It’s a shame they decided to do this with a shortened season. As for George dying, why would they pass up such an emotion moment in Sheldon’s life? That would be a cop-out.
Because this show is a comedy, not a drama. They should end it on a high note with Sheldon moving to California. They could do a voice over about his father’s death, or just allude to it or leave it out completely. We already know what happens anyways.
I knew it was coming, I know it’s the right time. Still I am not ready to say goodbye :'(
Well, they tore down the Ranch a month ago, so I figured it would be moving or ending.
What Ranch???
With the strike I was certain they’d be given a shortened 8th and final season. Oh well, here’s to a great send-off 🥂
Have loved this show but it is time. The kids are getting too old for their characters. They could do a Georgie/Mandy spinoff.
To end it during a strike-shortened season really sucks.
I watch 2 comedies only. Young Sheldon and Son of a Critch. I really hope that they decide to do a comedy about the rest of the family (The Coopers) because they are comedy gold, once Young Sheldon ends.
I hope George doesn’t die at the end of the series. Leave it to our imagination that he dies in Sheldon’s fourteenth year. We don’t have to see it. I want to enjoy watching the reruns. I have a hard time doing that when a major character dies even if it’s expected. George is so much more than Sheldon led us to believe in TBBT.
Although it was retconned, that was how I felt watching reruns of Roseanne knowing that I’d get back to where Dan you know…
Aww, I’m very sad this is ending! One of my favorite shows.
I’ll be sad to see it go. Big Bang Theory is such a big part of my life, it will feel empty to not have something around.
Reruns are on!!!
I think the spinoff will be about Howard….. possibly a prequel about him and his Mother or currently with Bernadette and their children
Personally, I’d like to see a sequel about their kids. The whole of TBBT group that is. The original stars can guest star from time to time and CeCe can even be on. We’d then know what happened with Raj… and see how the kids grew up.
Sheldon is growing and starting to not look like the older version. It has to end. But I will miss it.
Say it isn’t so!!
I came to this show late but actually preferred it to ‘Big Bang’: so well-written, well -cast and
just great stories. I’ll really miss ‘Young Sheldon.’
And I like the idea of ending before George dies!
I have no regrets but, I knew that it’s time that the show is ending because, Iain is going to be 16 in July of 2024.
Reruns of the show are on!!!
I enjoyed this show initially. But as Sheldon grew, so did his obnoxious behavior. I’d love to see a Georgie spinoff from this. He’s the bright spot in the show for me.
They cannot make a *shorter than usual* season the last one this is ridiculous
This is outrageous! Canceled series end on a shortened season, not one of the most watched network series on USA. And whoever wrote the article pretending as if it is completely normal cause they had already said that this season could be the last? Yeah a 22 episodes season could be the last not a 13-14 episodes one, don’t act as if it’s the same?
