It’s official: Young Sheldon is coming to an end.
The Big Bang Theory prequel will kick off its seventh and final season on Thursday, Feb. 15 (CBS, 8/7c) and conclude with a one-hour series finale on May 16. (For cast reactions, click here.)
“As a prequel to one of the biggest comedies, Young Sheldon proved lightning can strike twice,” said CBS entertainment president Amy Reisenbach said in a statement Tuesday. “It set itself apart with a remarkable cast that felt like a family from the first moment we saw them on screen and brought characters to life with unique heartfelt stories that drew audiences in from the start. We extend a sincere thank you to executive producers Chuck Lorre, Steve Molaro and Steve Holland and the entire writing and producing teams for six wonderful seasons. We look forward to seeing their final season unfold and giving it a proper send off with the best episodes yet for their fans to enjoy.”
Added Lorre, Molaro and Holland: “Being able to tell the origin of Sheldon Cooper, and expanding the story to include the entire Cooper family has been a wonderful experience. We are grateful to our fans for embracing this chapter of the Coopers these past six seasons, and on behalf of the entire Young Sheldon family, we’re excited to share this final season with you.”
Holland previously told TVLine that Season 7 of the Eye network’s top-rated sitcom could be its last. “We’ve certainly started to talk about it,” the EP said in March. “There are certainly things we know we want to hit next season, and there are certain things where, if it’s the end versus if it’s just [another season], those things might be different.”
Assuming the prequel’s narrative keeps at a steady pace, Sheldon will turn 14 in Season 7 — the age at which, per Big Bang’s previously established timeline, the future Nobel Prize winner moves from Medford, Texas, to Pasadena, Calif., to begin his graduate studies at the California Institute of Technology.
That same year, Sheldon’s older brother Georgie — who recently put a ring on Mandy’s finger — marries for the first time, and family patriarch George meets his maker, setting up Young Sheldon for a bittersweet sendoff not unlike early ’90s classic The Wonder Years. But time will tell if the spinoff remains true to canon. As Holland previously warned TVLine, “just because [something happened on Big Bang] doesn’t mean it’s a story [our narrator] has to tell.”
The Young Sheldon news comes as Lorre and Warner Bros. are readying a second Big Bang spinoff for streaming service Max — though Lorre recently said that development is still in the “prenatal” stage.

I love this show but everything has an ending. I am just happy they know it’s ending so we can get a proper send off.
Personally, the spin-off that I would love to see is of the kids of the original TBBT. That way, the main cast from TBBT can guest star from time to time. Even bring CeCe in. I would really love that … have flashbacks to how the kids grew up dealing with their parents. We know that Sheldon, Leonard, and Howard have kids – we can also see what happened with Raj. This is the story I’d love to see!!
Sad that Young Sheldon will end even though we knew it would. This is the only traditional family show left to watch (although Missy could use some discipline). The characters work so well together, love Meemaw. Don’t want to see George die and love he and Mary to regroup and be happy. Move the home wrecker away. 😀. I may stream it later and not watch it end.
The show really found its legs the last 2 seasons as the focus changed more to incorporate the entire cast making it a true ensemble. Unfortunate that this is the end, because I think there’s still a ton of life left in the show.
Very, very sad. It’s the best ongoing series. With George dying, there cud be so many story lines. With baby CC, there cud be so much. You have the greatest actors bundled into that series. The actor who plays Mandy’s dad cud be in more shows. Paige is great. Plz don’t do what the Goldbergs did. Just end the show.
Love YOUNG SHELDON, but know all great things come to an end. I am so very impressed with the decision to avoid any sort of LAUGH TRACK. This factor along with the wonderful choice of characters have made this show so very memorable.
I was certain that the simple prolongment of “Strikemageddon” would have meant an eighth season for Young Sheldon, given the potential for a reduction of the episode order for its season seven. “Strikemageddon” and the Nightmare Virus pandemic have really killed YS‘s chances of surprassing the 150-episodes milestone. That aside, as somebody who wasn’t willing to get into the show, I am perfectly fine with this decision.
One of the best shows on tv. Love the actors, they bring real life, funny situations to us. Will hate to see it end.
As far as I’m concerned Sheldon and Mom can stay in Germany, with the whole rest of the people can have a new sitcom. Don’t kill of George, SR. I liked Meemaw her boyfriend, Georgie and girl friend etc. Sheldon the his mom was getting to be a pain.
Who cares???
I’m very sad, this is one of the reasons I don’t get too committed to many Series. I was disappointed when they took Common Law with Michael Ealy, off the air, and now my beloved Young Sheldon.
