Annie Potts‘ introduction as Meemaw was overshadowed by a trip to the emergency room in this Thursday’s Young Sheldon.
In “Poker, Faith and Eggs,” the Designing Women alum made her series regular debut as Sheldon’s beloved grandmother — but the real story here involved George Sr., who as well established on The Big Bang Theory isn’t long for this world. His mortality cast a shadow over the entire episode, and for good reason: Mary escorted him to the emergency room after he began complaining of chest pain, and what is ultimately diagnosed as a minor heart attack gave the entire family a major scare.
Georgie was especially on edge after learning his father was in the ER. Once Meemaw fell asleep, the 14-year-old stole her car keys and drove to the hospital with Sheldon and Missy in tow. When Meemaw woke up to discover her grandkids gone, she hightailed it to the hospital and lied to Mary about driving the kids there herself.
At the hospital, Sheldon stumbled upon George’s room and saw various nurses working away on his dad. Mary had a tight grasp on George’s hand, and he appeared to be experiencing severe discomfort. It was a powerful moment not at all played for laughs, and Sheldon looked positively petrified.
The young brainiac eventually made his way to the hospital chapel to say a little prayer for his dad — but since he doesn’t believe in God, he instead prayed to the French mathematician/Catholic theologian Blaise Pascal. Confused much? Allow Adult Sheldon to explain: “My thinking was, if [Pascal] was right about the existence of God, then he could pass along my request for my dad to get better.” (Aw!)
George pulled through, of course, but there was a sense of sadness as a viewer knowing that tragedy awaits the Cooper family within just a few years time.
Were you surprised to see Young Sheldon tackling George Sr.’s deteriorating health this soon into its run? And what did you think of Annie Potts as Meemaw?
I love Annie Potts — great addition
She’s great in everything. I wonder when her character is going to sing Soft Kitty to Sheldon?
I’m dying to see Georgie JR as an adult now
He has to either be in jail or the head of a company. Looks like he could go either way.
Probably not the head of a company. In an episode of BBT Mary was discussing how challenging Sheldon is, but that God doesn’t give anyone more than they can handle. She then said fortunately my other two children are dumb as soup.
I always considered that an odd statement because the adult Missy seemed quite intelligent
and a lot more aware of the real world than Sheldon. Even child Missy seems the have a
better grasp on the world than child Sheldon.
Agree. George Jr. doesn’t seem “dumb”, either just a normal kid. Mary also referred to Sheldon’s father as his “dumb-ass daddy”, and that doesn’t appear to fit either.
Did anyone else notice that the ER nurse was the same nurse who is always on Big Bang except not snarky and mean?
I thought she looked familiar. Nice touch.
Vernajean from “Welcome Back, Kotter” !
That scene with Sheldon looking in his father’s hospital room was like a gut punch to me. I can only imagine how it would terrify a child, even one as intelligent as Sheldon.
I also liked how the minister didn’t let Sheldon get the better of him. Sheldon could easily be a brat with all his knowledge but they are playing this out where sometimes he gets the upper hand and often he is still a kid where the adults make the rules.
I liked the way the minister reacted as well. After all he is still a kid and church and God is very important to his mother. It will be interesting to see how the show deals with faith and Sheldon’s questions in the episodes to come.
Was the church the same one from the Mayor?
So is it just me, or does Meemaw in this episode bear absolutely no resemblance personality wise to the Meemaw we’ve heard about and met on BBT? I’m not talking about looks. I’m talking about the way she behaved toward her grandkids. Does not seem like a woman the kids would love for very long. It was obvious she wasn’t a good grandmother despite letting them do whatever they wanted. And she didn’t seem to care for Sheldon they way she did on BBT.
I’m still wondering if Sheldon was reading an actual book on faith. If it’s real I want to know.
