Being an international spy really does seem sexy and glamorous, doesn’t it? Especially when Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are the ones doing it.
TVLine has an exclusive sneak peek at new photos from Amazon’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith, premiering Friday, Feb. 2 on the streamer with Glover (Atlanta) and Erskine (PEN15) taking over for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Glover and Erskine play two spies who are paired up together in an arranged marriage as Mr. and Mrs. John and Jane Smith, and in the photo above, it certainly looks like they’re playing the part, with a shirtless John cozying up next to Jane in bed.
But being a spy is hard work, too, as the photos below show us, with John and Jane leading a captured suspect away, and a bloodied and bruised John looking defeated in the back of a car. “Now hitched, John and Jane navigate a high-risk mission every week while also facing a new relationship milestone,” according to the official description. “Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they catch real feelings for each other. What’s riskier: espionage or marriage?”
Glover also serves as co-creator along with showrunner Francesca Sloane (Fargo), and he and Erskine are joined by a star-studded guest cast that includes Alexander Skarsgard, Sarah Paulson, Michaela Coel, John Turturro and Parker Posey, among many others.

These trailers look interesting, but its still missing the lighthearted fun/banter that the movie had. If you’re doing a riff off the movie, shouldn’t the tone be the same? Donald and Maya are both very funny people in the right projects – I hope they’re just not showing that in the trailer but it’ll be in the show.
The trailer above does have several overt comedy moments, so it’s not a full drama. I think it’ll be funny, but in a deadpan, naturalistic way; not an exaggerated, sitcom-y way. Both Donald and Maya have won major critical acclaim for this type of comedy.
Maybe a little more grounded and less stylized than the movie, which was tonally uneven and awkwardly cartoonish sometimes.
Most thing I’m excited about is to see Sarah Paulson back on our screens!
Let us never forget that the movie itself was a stone rip-off of the same-titled CBS series that starred Scott Bakula and Maria Bello. Boy, people sure have short memories.
Lots of people never knew and lots of people probably don’t care.
Looks like a total snoozefest. Glover has zero sex appeal and they have NO CHEMISTRY. The nerve! If you’re gonna do a copycat series and change the plot, you’d better have two hot leads that can sell it. Those two ain’t it!
That show was canceled after less than half a season in 1996. I don’t blame people for forgetting it.
That being said, I do feel bad for the creators of the forgotten show, because the film (and the new series) definitely borrowed ideas from it, and there was zero affiliation between the productions, as far as I can tell.
Sounds more the tv show Mr. & Mrs. Smith with Scott Bakula and Maria Bello from 1996 than the movie
