And Just Like That… wrapped up its sophomore season with a farewell feast, a hello from an old friend — and a goodbye to a key relationship.
As Thursday’s finale opens, Carrie is leaving a message for Aidan while he’s in Virginia taking care of his son Wyatt when she gets a call from… Miss Samantha Jones! (Kim Cattrall looks just as fabulous as we remember.) Samantha wanted to surprise Carrie by showing up to her farewell dinner, but her flight got delayed, so she has to stay in London. She has Carrie put her on speaker, though, to say goodbye to the old apartment — and she even has a bit of a British accent now? She and Carrie say a warm goodbye, and it’s just so nice to see these two talking again. Plus, how cute is that fuzzy kitten that Carrie has adopted?
Charlotte wakes up hung over, not even remembering that she tossed her phone into a margarita blender, and Harry whines to her: “I can’t do it all, Charlotte!” She sternly reminds him that he’s only doing “the bare minimum” of what all women are expected to do, and she needs his help because she loves her job and wants to keep doing it. (We’re kind of loving this newly empowered Charlotte.) Plus, Miranda drops by Steve’s Coney Island food booth, where she tells him she doesn’t want to just be in his past, but “in your present, and maybe in your future.” (As friends, of course.) She adds that he was right about the Brooklyn townhouse and about becoming parents: “The only thing you weren’t right about was us.” But he stops her right there: “No… I was right about us for a very long time.” Aw… Steve, you’re the best.
Nya learns she got elected to the prestigious American Law Institute, but she confesses to Miranda that she instinctively picked up her phone to share the news with Andre… before remembering he’s off having a baby with Hat Girl. Miranda reminds her “this is the life you wanted,” but Nya notes: “Except no man to share it with.” She doesn’t even want to go to Carrie’s dinner, but Miranda convinces her to go for the food — and hey, it turns out the Michelin chef is Toussaint, the guy played by CSI‘s Gary Dourdan who chatted up Nya at a bar in the season premiere. As people arrive at Carrie’s apartment for the dinner, Lisa breaks the tough news to Charlotte about her miscarriage, and Che admits to Lisette that they’re going through an emotional transition: “The old me is f–ked, and the new me’s not here yet.”
Che and Miranda call a truce, with Che vowing not to talk about their relationship on stage again and Miranda apologizing for ghosting them after the breakup. “Us? What was all that?” Miranda marvels. Che calls it “a trainwreck,” but they both decide it was “a good trainwreck” because at least it got them to where they needed to be. Seema is annoyed with Ravi taking phone calls about work, and Carrie warns her not to push him away, while Giuseppe drops a bomb on Anthony that he’s considering going back to Rome next month because he’s finding the New York literary scene — and other things — “impenetrable.” (Ahem.) When he says Anthony won’t let him in emotionally, Anthony admits he’s only been in love once before… and Giuseppe is surprised to hear him use the L-word.
Carrie introduces everyone to her tiny kitty (named Shoe!), but her baby talk triggers Lisa, who runs to the bathroom and wonders to Herbert: “Did I wish the baby away?” She’s wracked with guilt, but he reassures her that “it wasn’t meant to be.” Soon, dinner is served, and Nya is exchanging saucy innuendo with chef Toussaint. Carrie asks everyone at the table to name something they want to let go of in one word, and Seema says “distrust” while Miranda says “guilt” and Charlotte says “limits.” Carrie’s word: “expectations,” explaining that she doesn’t want to assume “things will go the way we think they should,” “because we never know what tomorrow will bring.”
Yeah, about that: After dinner, Miranda gets called in to do a last-minute TV interview with the BBC (where she reconnects with that woman Joy), Toussaint offers to take Nya home and Ravi tells Seema he needs to go to Cairo for five months for filming — but she turns down his invitation to join her. As Carrie is cleaning up, she hears pebbles being thrown at her window. It’s Aidan, who came back from Virginia — and actually sets foot in Carrie’s apartment! She notices he didn’t bring any luggage with him, and he sits her down to talk. He’s going back to Virginia to take care of Wyatt, and he’s staying there: “I don’t think I can come back up.” Wyatt had magic mushrooms in his system, too, and Aidan decides: “He needs a lot of watching, that one.” He’s always been the rock for his sons, and he needs to be that right now.
Carrie is stunned: “I can’t believe we’re back here again.” Aidan insists this isn’t the same as the other times they split up, though: “I won’t lose you again.” He asks her to give him until Wyatt is out of his teens, or another five years, since he’s about to turn 15. Since they already waited 20 years to get back together, what’s five more? He even snaps his fingers to show how quick it’ll be, and Carrie remembers that she wanted to let go of expectations. They have (a lot of) goodbye sex, and the next morning, as Aidan walks out of her new place, she tells him: “No matter what happens… this was not a mistake.” He assures her that “nothing’s gonna happen,” and as he leaves, he puts up his fingers as if to snap them.
As Season 2 draws to a close, Charlotte and Harry struggle to set up her new iPhone, Miranda has drinks with Joy, Anthony and Giuseppe reach (um) a new level of intimacy, Che shares a kiss with Toby, Nya invites Toussaint into her apartment, Seema and Ravi have athletic sex and Lisa and Herbert cuddle tenderly in bed. Carrie gets a call from Seema saying that since they’re both without their men, she got them a place on the beach — not in the Hamptons, but in Greece. The two friends bask in the Mediterranean sun, and when Seema asks, “What if they never come back?” Carrie answers: “There’ll be more.” She means cocktails, though, not men.
Now it’s your turn: Give the finale a grade in our poll, and then hit the comments to talk Samantha, Carrie and Aidan or anything else from this episode.
I hope that’s a wrap on Che. It makes no sense for them to stay without Miranda. Can you imagine Che on brunches or shoe shopping, discussing the Met Gala, MILF Lists, if it’s too soon to say I love you, Harry having dry orgasms, etc? They don’t fit with the other character at all.
Yes, but they were friends with Carrie before they dated Miranda.
Because they worked together, which they no longer do. I’m not talking about how this would play out in real life. Just how one of the eight leads no longer has a dramatic purpose to interact with the other seven.
This season could’ve easily fit in with original SATC (in later years). I enjoyed. I think a bunch of characters reached their peak. And with season 3 now ordered, hopefully a good chance to start afresh while keeping momentum going
I find Herbert to now be my fav character. I really like his and Lisa’s dynamic and overall energy and chemistry.
This was a really enjoyable finale. While this sequel isn’t perfect, its become a really fun comfort watch every week. Looking forward to where Carrie and co. end up next.
Also, SJP has some of the best hair in the game.
Miranda should move in with Carrie. She certainly has enough room. Beats sharing a bathroom and cramped apartment with Nya.
I’m sorry but this was a crap finale. Nice to see Kim but you could totally tell they weren’t speaking to each other.
Aidan asking for 5 years – see ya! That’s a ridiculous ask and unrealistic.
Podcast coworkers but no Steve at dinner – huh?
Still furious at Carrie for not standing up for Miranda last week and still inviting Che – why?
Please no more Che in Season 3.
Yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes.
Oh and HELL yes!
I have nothing to add. :)
This show is absolutely terrible. I didn’t watch Season 1 until Season 2 started and then had to play catch up. I only watched to find out when Samantha was coming on. She was by far, the highlight of the entire series. Carrie is no longer likeable. I don’t like a single one of the new characters, nor do I like the kids on the show. Seema is no substitute for the fabulous Miranda. She comes off as tacky and classless. She also looks old and haggard. I think Aiden is a complete moron. He’s too stupid to understand that the ONLY reason he is with Carrie is because Big is DEAD. I hate how Carrie, who loved Big with all her heart, body and soul and had a great marriage, now questions if he was a mistake and thinking maybe Aiden was the one she should have been with all along. She’s pathetic and she has a very bad memory. Big made her happy and he made her rich, now she’s blowing his money on expensive homes for an ex and his spawn. I hope this show doesn’t trot in all of her exes. I pray next season we don’t have her take another chance with Burger, or Jeremy, or the alcoholic, or Vaughn or her f-buddy (who’s now too busy doing insurance commercials). This show jumped the shark on episode one of season one. HBO needs to give it a rest. The show has no humor. The magic is gone.
You are right on a lot of points but it was just renewed for season 3.
Spot on – maybe the Russian can come back too! Just ugh, the magic is most definitely gone!
Shhh! He who shall not be named!
Love this show i hope season 3 gets here fast
I can overlook most things but that 5 year crap is completely unbelievable. Oh hey even though you just bought this expensive new place for us I’m casting you aside for half a decade so I can babysit my kid who is such a trainwreck I can’t even trust his bio mom. Like seriously? Get him therapist or treatment but don’t put your whole life on hold. If you were being such a great dad would he be that bad and even if you were you think being there is gonna keep them out it trouble? Doubt it
I wouldn’t even agree to the five months that Seema didn’t decline.
That is so far beyond selfish I would almost say narcissistic.
My lady has moved less than half that distance and I don;’t have Aidan or Carrie money to visit but we try to see each other every month. I could no believe he had the balls to ask her that.
And how weak is she to accept?
Hey Aidan, here’s a free quote/rhyme. I do not know the author.
“Remember to tell her you love her every night.
Because if you don’t ….someone else might.”
That relationship is beyond doomed.
I thought the same thing. Aiden needs to hold his ex wife accountable for co-parenting their son. Putting your life on hold to cater to your child is not a good example for them. I firmly believe you need to have a life in addition to raising your kids.
And what was the point of the one word things you’re ready to let go of? Shouldn’t it have been more about memories of the apartment? Wouldn’t that be nice for the new girl who is getting the apartment? Even Samantha understood what the Last Supper was supposed to be about with her “effing fabulous” shout out. But I guess what would the extras that didn’t belong there have to say? This show makes less and less sense – so disappointed.
Carrie/Aiden reunification is silly. They both are in completely different worlds now, he is going to leave VA to go to NY now all the time? And she just gets back together with him and buys a big place for his almost all adult kids she has never met? Miranda has evolved into a 50 something atty. Charlotte character hadn’t evolved at all. She should have been an art buyer at a prestigious company like Sotheby’s or Christie’s, going back and forth to London, instead she is just going to a gallery getting drunk with 30 year olds. No growth, nothing interesting. All the other “fringe” characters are boring stereotypes. The original SATC was so authentic/original. This reboot is not. I hope they find their footing and become better characters.
Worst writing ever. Aidan and Carrie on hold for 5 years? Ridiculous and completely unbelievable. I was really hoping for an ending that would make this season make sense, but like Carrie, I guess I should let go of expectations. Terrible.
Naively thought they might pull off a secret surprise bonus at the very end tying it all in and have Samantha pop up at the beach walking over with those drinks for Carrie & Seema (filmed separately per the BTS issues)
I thought the show found it’s groove with each new episode. The dinner scene was a great idea, and the writing was fresh and touching. However, the ending was such a disappointment. You can take amazing care of your children and carve out time for the love of your life. I also found it offensive that he threw his ex wife under the bus saying that because of her career she was not a present mother. Wasn’t he in Abu Dabi for work???
Samantha and Carrie’s conversation worked only because the actors weren’t actually talking to one another. NO ONE waits for five years for a relationship to pick back up again. Totally unrealistic, especially if they’re not going to speak to each other over that period of time. Move on, Carrie. Please, please, please end the Che story with this season finale!
