Chicago Fire Recap: Was #Brettsey Wedding a Satisfying Farewell?

Tanks for RSVPing to Chicago Fires fish store wedding!

In Wednesday’s episode, which marks Kara Killmer‘s final one as Sylvie Brett, the paramedic freaks out about her fishy wedding venue. Maid of Honor Violet promises to take charge and make Brett and Matt Casey’s nuptials into the “the best fish store wedding ever!” Even a shirtless Carver only temporarily distracts her from her mission of ordering all the flowers in town. She does, however, take a moment to reconsider going to the wedding with Carver. Now that it’s in a fish store, she supposes it would be no big deal for them to be each other’s dates, and Carver agrees.

Meanwhile, Brett frets about how she’s going to break the news to her fiancé. Mouch suggests couching the news with “tanks” puns (see above). But Brett needn’t have worried, because Casey shows up at the firehouse and declares that he doesn’t care where they get married as long as it’s the two of them there. (As if even-keeled Casey was ever going to get upset about the venue!)

Casey, does, however notice that his Best Man is missing. Cruz relays the fake story that Stella gave him about Severide’s flight being delayed after he didn’t answer her texts. Severide finally calls her and explains that there was a problem on the freeway, so he was late to the airport, and when he did get on a flight, there was no service. Stella asks where he is now, and it turns out to be much closer to home than she expected. Severide enters behind her, and the two share a passionate reunion kiss. In the afterglow, Severide assures her that it was always the plan for him to come home.

“I wasn’t sure,” Stella admits.

“I was,” Severide reiterates. “I love you, Stella Kidd.”

Severide doubles down on his feelings during a classic cigar chat with Casey, sharing that he loves fire investigation, but he never lost sight of the end goal, which was coming home to Stella. Severide recalls a conversation he once had with Casey that he’s been thinking about lately, where Casey told him the firehouse needs him and he needs it, too. Casey then remarks on how far they’ve come, from single bachelors to lucky guys in love.

“It feels permanent somehow, when you leave this time,” Severide says.

The chat is interrupted by a call, which ends up with Sylvie treating a criminal at gunpoint. When he isn’t looking, she spritzes him in the eye and races away just as Casey runs in and knocks the guy to the floor.

“I wasn’t going to miss my own wedding!” she tells a relieved Casey. On the upside, there was a cancelled bridal expo at the call, and the firehouse crew is able to get the flowers for the wedding.

Chicago Fire Brett/Casey Wedding

At last, Casey and Brett are at the altar, with Boden officiating and declaring that the couple is goodness and kindness personified, but not the most savvy at realizing what everybody else already knew: that they should have gotten married a long time ago.

Casey goes first with his vows:

“Getting here to this place was the toughest battle of my life. It was worth every moment because we’re here now. You are my port in the storm. The most generous, caring person I’ve ever known, and sometimes, the most stubborn… We were apart too long. Now I promise that you’ll never be alone. I will always be by your side, and that this, two of us together, it’s a fire that will never go out. I had to get a fire metaphor in there somewhere.”

Sylvie’s vows reveal the reason she wanted to get married at the aquarium:

“Years ago, you and I took Amelia to go and see the fishes there, do you remember? What you probably don’t know is that is when I realized that you are the only man for me. The way you were with her, I knew you were born to be a father. And when you decided to be a father to the Darden boys, it only made me love you more, even though I was trying so hard to let you go, and I couldn’t. Like you said, we were meant to be. We were meant to be a family.”

With that, Boden pronounces them “husband and wife and a family.”

At the reception at Molly’s, Brett says an emotional goodbye to Violet and Stella (“I will never in my life have a partner I will love this much,” Violet tearfully says), while Casey promises Severide that he’ll be back soon. The couple then get into their caution tape-decorated car with baby Julia and the rest of their family as their friends cheer them off into their happily ever after.

Elsewhere in the episode:

* Violet tells Carver at the wedding reception that she won’t survive something bad happening again to someone she really cares about. What Carver hears is that she really cares about him, then replies that it’s a good thing nothing bad is going to happen to him, especially while they dance.

* In other Violet news, the paramedic is promoted to PIC. But with that, comes new headaches from the tough new paramedic field chief, who declares that she will be picking Violet’s new partner, and no, she won’t be taking any recommendations from Violet.

* Kylie volunteers to help Chief Boden with a backlog of paperwork. She admits to Gibson that she misses 51, and he urges her to tell Chief if she wants to transfer to 51. But there’s no space at 51, Kylie notes. Gibson says she should still tell him.
