Holes are bad, Thursday’s episode of Ghosts tells us, because spirits can’t climb up the sides. That doesn’t bode well for Flower, who’s stuck in a well. But Hetty also found herself in a hole of sorts, with no way out, while still alive.
In 1895, Hetty learns that her husband Elias has disappeared and all his legal troubles now fall on her shoulders. When the police come knocking, Hetty sequesters herself in the library, where they recently got one of the first phones in the area. In the present, she claims that she died of an accidental overdose (“I used to always say you could never have too much morphine, but apparently, that is not correct”) while celebrating Elias’ absence. The truth, however, is slowly unraveled as the gang realizes that Flower has not been “sucked off.”
Stephanie, the attic ghost, saunters downstairs and informs the others that her basement boy toy Ralph was the one who went into the light. Nancy admits that maybe she forgot to count him when doing a basement ghosts role call. After all, it’s dark down there and everyone’s wearing the same shapeless sack, she reasons. So if it was Ralph, that means Flower might still be out there, lost on the property, the group realizes. Thor says that Flower has spoken to him from the beyond during his walks, telling him, “I am well.” Except what if she was saying, “I am in a well,” Isaac suggests.
Everyone rushes to the well, where they find Flower, who explains that she fell after following a butterfly, naturally. Now, this is where things get complicated, because ghosts move through walls, so gripping the sides to climb out is impossible. Isaac, Sas and Thor recall the time they fell in a hole in 1895, along with a Puritan ghost named Patience, and were trapped for nearly a year. The men, ultimately, escaped by holding hands as they went through the dirt, but Isaac sneezed and let go of Patience, so she’s still potentially somewhere out there in the ground.
To make matters worse, Sam and Jay have left for the weekend, and while they’re gone, Mark is filling the well with cement. Trevor’s attempt to FaceTime the couple via Mark’s phone is unsuccessful. (Turns out ghosts don’t show up on FaceTime, leading Thor to exclaim that Sam try the new iOS update.)
As the group frantically scrambles to rescue Flower before the cement starts flowing, Hetty reveals a telephone cord wrapped around her neck underneath her dress collar. She lowers it into the well and the friends pull Flower safely out.
Hetty later opens up to Sam and Isaac about how she thought she was protecting her son by giving him wealth with her death. And yet, he still turned out to be a murderer. As it turns out, she didn’t give him the one thing he truly needed: a mother’s love. But she saw no way out, she confesses, adding that her life was all about keeping up appearances, when in reality, she was very unhappy and didn’t know how to ask for help. She didn’t even know the phone dialed out.
“It was a mistake that I deeply regret. I still had so much life left to live,” Hetty confesses.
“You were in a hole. And sometimes, you need help getting out of those,” Isaac replies.
Flower then thanks Hetty for revealing her secret to save her and, in return, shares (again) that she robbed a bank.

Can anybody say performer of the week?
Literally came here to say this 👏👏👏
Wisocky could get that in any given week, on any show she’s on. She’s fantastic.
I wasn’t expecting to tear up to this show tonight but she gave such an incredibly moving performance and it was well written too. It didn’t glorify or minimize it, while also still having some touches of humor.
Right? She’d BETTER be in there this week.
.
That episode was intense. But I thought they handled Hetty’s death reveal really well, and the end talk with her and Isaac and Sam was very touching and moving as well. I like how this explains so much about Hetty and adds to what we know about her, and I think it was an interesting way to touch on a tough subject.
.
And the whole storyline with everyone trying to get Flower out of the well was a nice light balance to all the heaviness of the Hetty storyline. So great to have Flower back, and it was so sweet to see how everyone was so excited and happy to see her again.
.
Yeah. Just an excellent episode the whole way around.
I thought it was going to be a secret passage that went right past the well.
.
I’ve also long thought that Hetty killed her hubby, but tonight I finally gave up the ghost on that theory.
.
Also, I think we are seeing that people move on when they are happy, and don’t have any unresolved issues here on earth.
Your comment is spot on! Flower brings such a levity that the show needs, and quite frankly has been missing all season, and the writers did a great job with such ann important sad and heavy storyline with hetty with flowers rescue. I hope we see more of hetty and flower in the future.
How utterly tragic for poor Hetty! I was not expecting that. :( At least now she has a chance to experience life through Sam and with the others. I’m glad it was revealed with a happier ending of helping Flower return. For a moment, I was afraid they were going to drag it out and have Flower go through the dirt. Getting lost in the dirt sounds terrifying. Looking forward to when or if Patience ever shows up. Next week’s episode looks awesome. Can’t wait!
I wouldn’t be surprised if Patience shows up right in the season finale, interrupting Isaac’s wedding in some sort of cliffhanger fashion.
This was a great episode! I’m glad we finally learned about how Hetty died, but also happy that we balanced the sadness with Flower being found. But, did I miss something with Carol? She hasn’t been in the last two episodes. I don’t really miss her. I find her grating. But, did she leave in some way and I missed it?
No, Carol is still around. They just haven’t had her in every episode.
That was my exact question regarding Carol lol, I was like hey we’re missing a ghost! I didn’t even realize she was missing in the previous episode? Was she in the previous episode?
The recurring ones (Nigel, Nancy) seem to come and go but there are even main ghosts missing from several episodes. Some say in season 1 that COVID restrictions played a part in that but I am not sure. They don’t always explain it either. If you check IMDb, Rose & Utkarsh are in 50 episodes. No “ghost” has more than 48 and Roman (Sas) has the least if the main ghosts at 43 – with the obvious exception of Sheila/Flower, who had maternity leave.
Don’t worry Carol is still around. It will be interesting if/when Thor is exposed that he slept with Carol. I’m think Flower will be okay with it based on her history.
One of the best episodes they have done which actually done and the livings had little to do with it. This show just keeps getting better.
So so so good. Incredible episode and definitely did NOT see that twist coming!! I just adore this show!
I love that Flower is back, and that we learned Hetty’s tragic story – that was incredibly powerful. And it’s great that they’ve set up Patience, who I hope will be part of the cast soon. Still… are the producers ever going to address that they flat out lied when they said they wanted one of the Main 8 to be sucked off in the season premiere? I’m thrilled we got Flower back (and in such an inventive way), but wow they were kind of crappy about that misdirect.
I forgive misdirects if they are to protect the story. If they had said that and she had been back by episode two, it would feel like a bait and switch. But she was gone for quite a while, there were repercursions. Then, personally, speaking for no one else, I’m OK with that.
Well said. They lied to keep the storyline secret, so when Flower was shown to still be around it was a surprise. And I loved the characters saying, “It was just a basement ghost,” acknowledging what they’d done. Excellent episode!
No, if you go back and read the interviews TVLine did after the season premiere, it couldn’t have been more obvious that they were just covering for Sheila Carrasco’s maternity leave (“We sort of had a situation where someone was not going to be available for a little while…..we’re not saying that this is the last you’ll ever see of Flower. “)

I’m actually more annoyed that they kind of spoiled Flower coming back. That scene that showed she was in the well a while back and then the preview showing them all finding her ruined the surprise. I’d have rather been shocked to have her back in this most recent episode.
It wasn’t a spoiler, it was setting up dramatic irony, which made some things funnier or ‘yikes’er knowing she was out there while other stuff was going on
Absolutely love Rebecca Wisocky, she is so good as Hetty! She was the best in Devious Maids, as well. I’ve been catching up on other roles she’s done – just a wonderful actress.
Anyone whose has lost a loved one to suicide, like my brother, realizes the pain they must have endured. A very touching episode. A good comedy can me you laugh and feel. Well done.
🌹 For your brother and for my brother and nephew.
My condolences.
When Flower revealed her “secret”, I knew what it would be, but laughed. I am so glad the 8 are re-united. I do like the British version but love the way the American cast has been “gelling” this season.
Absolutely love the show, the premise, the characters.
The acting in this week’s episode was first rate. The story did not coalesce. Why didn’t Issac, Sas, and Thor know how Hetti died? They were all on that side of the veil when she took her own life. So were the basement ghosts for that matter.
And what happened to Pete’s wife?
The story line is getting sloppy, but I still wouldn’t miss an episode.
They said that they were stuck in the hole, and that when they got back, Hetty had died in their absence. And the basement ghosts are in the basement and wouldn’t have been there when she committed suicide. Not a sloppy storyline. Just sloppy listening skills.
But one thing then; on the last episode Flower was with Thor and then the sucking of happened; how did she end up chasing a butterfly while being with Thor when the sucking occured. It was even handled when the other girls started chasing Thor as Flower had been his 2nd one sucked off. Missing the connection on that point of where Flower was in season 2 finale and where they said she was.
They cut to Sam and Jay arriving at the end of season 2 so I think showing that time the ghosts continued whatever they were doing. If you remember in the season 3 premiere Isaac and Nigel weren’t together either although before they cut to Sam and Jay at the end of season 2 Nigel and Isaac had been together. But Nigel came running inside the mansion at the beginning of season 3 premiere and said he had give to the shed to announce their engagement when he saw the light. So I think that’s probably how that worked out.
Come on Linda, all was explained during the episode.
Maybe Linda shares many traits with Flower, and has a short attention span.
Pete’s wife, Carol is like Crash or Nigel or Nancy (or the other basement ghosts). They are ‘around’ but don’t appear in every episode.
What an amazing episode, filled with broad comedy and tender pathos. How can this brilliant show not get any love from awards organizations?
Patience really needs to show up. That would be a great season premiere.
Agreed with everything said here. Wanted to also note the awesome conversation between Sas and Trevor about what’s underneath a Victorian dress. It added some needed humor and also brushed aside the issue that Trevor should have known about the cord, given their very hands-on affair. Brilliant!
I also love how this episode fills a plothole from season 1’s “The Vault” when they first discovered the vault. I always questioned how Thor, Sas, and Isaac could all possibly not have known about the vault. And, yay to Pete for noting it too!
I just loved this episode, best one of the season. Actually season has been a bit weak with exception of Halloween episode. This one actually felt like the show is back on track finally with what makes to so special! Heartfelt moments, hilarious moments, silly moments, and all in between one liners that made us laugh hard we cried! I think having flower back made the family whole again and shows the power of this ensemble. It’s not about individual actors. It’s a true ensemble. I hope they win an ensemble Emmy award one day! The show deserves it! Individual awards don’t matter. It’s the ensemble Award that this show deserves!
Wow! What a swerve. To say the least I was miffed when it was revealed it was Flower was sucked off. Flower reminds me of a women with whom I used to work with.
Flower brings such a needed addition to the show. I’m so happy she’s back also. My mom who is from that time period just loves her and relates to her. We all cheered when her face was revealed at the bottom of the well
I was thinking Carol’s purse could help pull Flower from the well so I was very surprised
I love this show. Great characters and story lines.
What a great show and story!
This episode made me sob. I’ve felt her pain 😢
