Hope she’s comfortable in scrubs, because Caterina Scorsone has had them issued to her by the wardrobe department since 2010, when she made her debut as Dr. Amelia Shepherd on both Grey’s Anatomy and its first spinoff, Private Practice. Since then, she has established herself as one of the franchise’s most invaluable stars, outliving on-screen brother Patrick Dempsey’s Derek to remain front and center on the mothership. (As a matter of fact, Amelia is now Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital’s neuro chief.)
Prior to slipping into her first on-screen lab coat, Scorsone scored a game-changing role in the crime-drama Missing in her native Canada. Her character on the series, which ran from 2003-6, was Jess Mastriani, the rare but handy FBI agent who becomes psychic after being struck by lightning. (What? It could happen.)
Scorsone married Rob Giles from the rock band The Rescues in 2009. (They filed for divorce in 2020.) Together, they have three daughters, including middle child Pippa, who was born with Down syndrome. In 2020, the actress and mom’s advocacy for children with cognitive difficulties earned her the Quincy Jones Exceptional Advocacy Award from the Global Down Syndrome Foundation.
