The Hargreeves siblings may have had their powers stripped away during The Umbrella Academy‘s last finale… but those are definitely tentacles we’re seeing back on Ben in a new trailer for the show’s final season.
In much of the freshly released footage (which you can watch in full above), the Hargreeves do look the worse for wear after last season’s failed reprogramming of the universe, with everyone appearing a bit tired and sad (or hyperventilating, in Klaus’ case). But as the trailer progresses, the siblings become more lively, and we’re treated to visuals of — among other things — a machine gun-wielding Santa Claus, Luther in a ball pit, and what appears to be new cast members Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally performing some kind of dance number. Because this is The Umbrella Academy, and all of those things make sense on this show.
And we can’t ignore the potential for the Hargreeves to get their powers back in this new universe — or perhaps Ben still had his all along? — after Sir Reginald left his kids powerless at the close of Season 3.
“Someone asked me, ‘Why would [Reginald] leave the kids in such a bad place?’” showrunner Steve Blackman told TVLine after the third season finale. “I would argue that he thinks he might be leaving them in a good place. They’ve been complaining about their powers and who they are, and now he’s saying, ‘Look, you’re free. You don’t have powers anymore, there’s nothing holding you back. Live your lives.’ The audience gets to decide whether Hargreeves did a good or bad thing for them.”
In Season 4, “the Hargreeves siblings have scattered after the climactic showdown at the Hotel Oblivion led to a complete reset of their timeline,” per the official synopsis. “Stripped of their powers, each is left to fend for themselves and find a new normal — with wildly varying degrees of success. Yet the trappings of their uncanny new world prove too hard to ignore for very long.”
Meanwhile, “their father Reginald, alive and well, has stepped out of the shadows and into the public eye, overseeing a powerful and nefarious business empire. A mysterious association known as The Keepers holds clandestine meetings believing the reality they’re living in is a lie and a great reckoning is coming. As these strange new forces conspire around them, the Umbrella Academy must come together one last time — and risk upsetting the shaky peace they’ve all endured so much to secure — to finally set things right.”
The Umbrella Academy‘s six-episode final season drops in its entirety on Thursday, Aug. 8, on Netflix. Watch the latest trailer above, then hit the comments with your thoughts!
Only six episodes? How hard would it have been to make 10, like the other seasons?
About 30-40 million dollars to shoot four extra episodes.
Netflix could obviously afford it if they wanted to, but somebody did the math and figured out how much a final season was worth to them.
If the choice is six or zero (which might well have been the case), I’m happy with six. Focus on what you have, not what you don’t.
I am so looking forward to this! It looks like a lot of fun
I got bored of this show in its second season, before Page decided all he wanted to play was variations of himself. Seriously, look it up. The only other project he has starred in outside of Umbrella since coming out is a film he wrote and directed himself about a trans man. Constantly being yourself isn’t being an actor. Vanya shouldn’t have had to change because Ellen did.
Maybe because it’s harder for him to book roles now..
I feel sad if that’s true.
Personally, I love all the actors there, not just Elliot..
And just read interviews from the creators of the show and the comic, they all like that Vanya becomes Victor..
I’m sure it’s a major catch 22. You don’t want somebody to be depressed and unhappy with their body etc, but he may not want to play a woman anymore. Ok… So let’s have him play a man, not even a trans one. Well… To be honest I and many other people would have a hard time buying him playing some expectant father for example. We know what he doesn’t have. I’m not judging his choices in life or belittling him, but just saying that it does limit his options, yes
No sympathy unless it’s for the devil right??
I found seasons 2 and 3 a let down from the first, especially season 2. Some really questionable writing, lack of character work, and major plot holes. Hope the final season is more on par with the first.
Excited for it 👍🏻
