#SSD controller: Phison Electronics Corps. E28 explores the limits of PCIe 5.0 in 6 nm E28 as an upgrade from the E26 As with the PCIe 4.0 generation, which began with the E16 controller and later received the more efficient E18, #Phison is now following suit with the PCIe 5.0 controllers. While the E26 heralded the new era and still dominates the market, the E28 follows with even more performance and efficiency. This is primarily made possible by the change to a finer manufacturing process, as it is now 6 nm instead of 12 nm as in the predecessor. TSMC remains the contract manufacturer. Once again, 8 #NAND channels and a dedicated #DRAM cache are supported. In combination with fast #memory chips, which are now expected to operate at up to 4,200 MT/s, #Phison claims a maximum throughput of 14.5 GB/s for both sequential read and sequential write. However, the leap in performance, especially when writing, is more likely due to the new #memory chips. The E26 was also able to further increase its performance over time with faster #NAND flash. The jump to 3 million IOPS for random reading and writing is again a very big one. It remains to be seen how the average power consumption of 8.5 watts is to be classified. If the power consumption of an entire #SSD with Phison E28 is meant, this would be a step forward compared to the 10+ watts of the E26 SSDs. However, Silicon Motion Technology Corp. has demonstrated with the #SM2508 that a similarly high throughput is also possible with only around 7 watts. Western Digital is planning a PCIe 5.0 SSD with its own controller, which achieved 15 GB/s and 2 million IOPS at just 6.5 watts in initial demos. At CES 2025, Phison is showing a reference design with the E28, but is not presenting a performance demo. This could be an indication that it will be a while before the market launch. E31T now also with Micron Technology #NAND The E31T model is already a step ahead, as some #SSDs such as the Corsair MP700 Elite (test) are already on the market. With a maximum throughput of around 10 GB/s, these #SSDs require less than 6 watts. However, they do not have a #DRAM cache, which is always indicated by the suffix “T” in the Phison portfolio. The news at CES is that Micron's G9 NAND has now also been approved for the E31T after #Kioxia's #BiCS8 NAND. The first #SSD with this combination is the Crucial P510, which according to Phison benchmarks achieves 11 GB/s read and just under 8.7 GB/s write.
