Collaborating and exploring partnerships around sexual and reproductive health was the parting shot of our policy and advocacy program officer Linda Kakolwa yesterday at the 1st EAC SRH youth conference in Nairobi. This did well with the remarks of the Program officer Robert Shaita Athewa from the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI), who called for delegates present to work and engage with their National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) to protect #adolescent rights in the SRH programs that they implement. “SRH is a real issue, and if we do not address it, we will die. I don’t want to die,” said a representative from the Center for Reproductive Rights. This was quite moving as the Wast African Youth Network hosted the first of its kind gathering where the majority of the delegates were #adolescents. “We need to make the information available”, called out Irene Alenga of AMREF while taking the delegates through a Knowledge Management session under the Knowledge Success Initiative supported by USAID. Under the #SHARP project supported by the European Union, EANNASO and the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI) are attending the meeting ending today with a clear focus on advocating for the Great Lakes Region to have #healthyadolecents who can have accessible, available, affordable and of quality SRH services and commodities.

By leveraging their grassroots presence and networks, they serve as bridges between policymakers and local populations, ensuring that interventions are inclusive and contextually relevant. They facilitate community engagement, promote awareness, and strengthen local capacities to detect and respond to health threats at the human-animal-environment interface. Together, CSOs and communities enhance surveillance, advocate for equitable resources, and drive behaviour change, aligning efforts to achieve holistic and integrated health outcomes”. The webinar of 8 November 2024 on Community Engagement in Pandemic Prevention and One Health co-organized by EANNASO, PREZODE and ILRI was attended by more than 70 colleagues from civil society and community groups throughout Anglophone Africa. Concrete examples on community engagement to fight the Rift Valley fever in Kenya and Anthrax in Zambia were presented, followed by plenty of questions, discussions and country exchanges across the region. 🎥 For those who were unable to attend, you can find the recording at https://lnkd.in/grs2eVgc, as well as the presentation and country cases on line - with a million thanks to my EANNASO friends, GLORY CHAGAMA and Lizzie Otaye PRSK, for the wonderful organization.
