Chytomo Report 2024 in achievements and figures. We are proud of the result. It's an honor for us to work with our team, Ukrainian and international publishers, and of course, with our outstanding media partners! ✍ We published 204 news pieces, and 120 features and interviews in English, and 1219 news pieces and 298 stories, features, and interviews in Ukrainian 📗 2 books published! 📈 1 research conducted 📢 20 international and local media outlets from 11 countries republished, quoted or created their own stories with our help and based on our articles, news and research - in 7 languages! 🏆 Thanks to the Chytomo Award, we were able to support initiatives showing important achievements in book publishing over the year, amounting to USD $9 thousand, and provide a stand at the Frankfurt Book Fair for the winner of the Special prize. 💰 The amount of grant funds raised for both editorials (English and Ukrainian) reached USD $85 thousand, which covered 79% of the editorial expenses. 🫂 The Chytomo Club raised USD $13 thousand — 13% of our budget. 🏢 Small revenues from advertising and Ukrainian commercial partnerships saved the day, providing USD $8 thousand (8% budget that in previous years amounted to only 3%) ...and much more: find the 🔗 in the comments

For centuries, Russian oppression erased Ukrainian culture—from Muscovy’s claims to the Soviet regime’s horrors. The Executed Renaissance silenced 223 writers; the Gulag and Holodomor devastated millions. VUFKU, Ukraine’s film industry, was crushed, while libraries and museums were colonized. The Kremlin continues this erasure today, proving the Russian Empire’s shadow still looms over Ukraine’s heritage. 👉 The project by Chytomo “The Erasure of the Word” specifically highlights the ways Russians suppress Ukrainians in the cultural field. 90 years ago, in December 1934, mass arrests of Ukrainian writers began. Among them: Mykola Kulish, Yevhen Pluzhnyk, Valerian Pidmohylnyi, Borys Teneta, and others. He translated the works of over 200 authors from 20 languages and more than 40 national literature and folklore traditions into Ukrainian. He is the author of 10 poetry books, more than 100 short stories, fairytales that formed 18 collections of short stories, and 10 works of big prose genres, novels, 15 plays, and countless sketches, articles, and essays. His name is Ivan Franko, a classic of Ukrainian literature, translation, and literature criticism, and it is time for you to know more about him! In the last few days, I had a great chance to present Ukrainian poetry from the frontline in two German cities, Kassel and Mainz. We presented 8 authors - Artur Dron, Yaryna Chornohuz, Ihor Mitrov, Sula, Serhiy Rubnikovych, Liza Zharikova, Vasyl Dukhnovsky, Maksym Kryvtsov. We read poetry in German translations, showcased videos where poets were reading poetry in Ukrainian, and talked about the power of these people and the importance of support -- them and the Ukrainian Army in general. For me, it's not easy to have a dialogue with the German audience now when people talk more about peace than justice in Germany, but I believe that every small step is important, and people are open to poetry. I am grateful to the audience who visited, the co-hosts who contributed (Julia Blando (geb. Hagen) Sebastian Mense), and the coordinators for the energy and support!
