His remarkable contributions have left an enduring legacy, and his untimely loss is a profound tragedy for the global health community. On behalf of AFENET, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues, as well as to the parliament and people of Tanzania. In an effort to improve vaccine preventable disease (VPD) surveillance in Uganda, AFENET in collaboration with WHO in Uganda and the Uganda Ministry of Health's Uganda Expanded Program on Immunization, with support from the US Centers for Disease Control conducted a VPD Surveillance training for Uganda Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) residents and graduates in Entebbe from 29 - 31 October 2024. AFENET Epidemiologist, Dr John Kamulegeya, said the 38 trained officers will be deployed to support polio surveillance activities in high-risk districts in the country, starting this month. Following a successful first round in early October, Uganda will next week conduct the second round of a sub-national polio immunization campaign in 49 districts in the eastern and northeastern regions. The country declared a polio outbreak on 1 June 2024, after the polio virus was detected during environmental surveillance in Mbale City. The campaign aims to vaccinate all children under five years through a house-to-house vaccination strategy. #KeepUgandaPolioFree #EndPolio #HumanlyPossible
