  • An Ordinance is a law made or passed by the district council under Section 38 of the Local Governments Act Cap 243, (Laws of Uganda). Ordinances empower local governments to address specific needs and challenges within their jurisdiction effectively. One such challenge in Pader District, Northern Uganda is the increasing rate of Gender-Based Violence. In light of this, The Pader Women's Rights Activists proposed and drafted the Gender-Based Violence Ordinance to curb and penalise perpetrators of GBV in the Pader District. We recently received a memo from the Attorney General’s office wherein they approved the draft copy of this Ordinance. This draft has been forwarded to the Ministry of Local Government for their final perusal and return to the district for signing. We hope that this Ordinance once passed will reduce the rate of GBV in Pader and protect women from the effects of Gender Based Violence. This initiative was taken under the We Cannot Wait project supported by the Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA) Network. #FIDAAt50 #50YearsOfProgress #WomenEmpowerement

  • On 14th November 2024, We were invited to join the South African High Commission in Uganda as they celebrated South Africa’s Women’s Month. This celebration focused on the role of gender equality and women’s empowerment in shaping the political landscape of Africa with the conversation highlighting the barriers women continue to face, the importance of inclusive governance, and the urgent need for political will to ensure that women’s voices and actions truly matter in shaping our societies. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, the first deputy prime minister of Uganda and Minister for East African Community Affairs, in her address, emphasized the need for women to be at the forefront of advocating for women’s rights and promoting their active participation in decision-making processes especially in the political sphere. #FIDAAt50 🥳 #50YearsOfProgress

  • Welcome back from the 2nd Annual Inter-University Gender and Human Rights Moot Competition, celebrating the hashtag #FIDAAt50 milestone! This year’s competition was particularly special, and we commend all the teams who participated, supported, and contributed to its success. We are incredibly proud of the winning team from Gulu University, marking their impressive debut at our moot competitions. A special acknowledgment goes to Ochwo Isaac, our steadfast ally for women’s rights, who was awarded Best Orator of the tournament. His impassioned advocacy for gender justice captivated the judges and emphasized the urgent need for hashtag #FamilyLawReformNow. For 50 years, FIDA Uganda has championed women's empowerment and justice for all. This competition underscored the vital impact of our work and renewed our dedication to justice and equality. We are deeply grateful to IDLO, Gen G, We Cannot Wait, the Swedish Embassy in Uganda, and all our supporters for making this memorable event possible. hashtag #FIDAAt50 #50YearsOfProgress #GenderAndHumanRightsMoot2024

  • The primary objective of our mentorship program at FIDA-Uganda is to develop the leadership capabilities of female lawyers and young female legal practitioners in Uganda and to build a social movement of pro-human rights activists with a passion for service. On Friday 18th October, we had the pleasure of hosting our 2024 mentorship cohort for an orientation to their benefit of defining expectations for this remarkable journey. We were able to highlight that the goal was to learn and encourage sisterhood and collaboration for growth. As we celebrate our 50-year journey, we are proud of our female lawyers and colleagues, who through our mentorship program, have become a great force to reckon with in society. While we look forward to the next 50 years, our commitment is stronger - to raise confident competent lawyers who will be ready to take the lead on challenging unjust laws, policies, and norms to promote women’s rights, gender equality, women’s empowerment, and access to justice. #FIDAAt50 #50YearsOfProgress #FIDALeadershipAcademy
