Did you know that peatlands cover only 3% of the Earth's land but store a third of the world's soil carbon? On World Wetlands Day 2025, celebrated under the theme "𝐶𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑣𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑊𝑒𝑡𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑠 𝑇𝑜𝑑𝑎𝑦 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑎 𝑆𝑒𝑐𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝑇𝑜𝑚𝑜𝑟𝑟𝑜𝑤" we showcased the #Peat4People (#P4P) Project at the national celebrations in Rubirizi District. This Project is our new initiative to promote sustainable wetland and peatland management. The Peat4People (P4P) Project, supported by partners Nile Basin Initiative Secretariat, #DiapolCE, the 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐟𝐬𝐰𝐚𝐥𝐝 𝐌𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞, and FAO Uganda, will help address peatland drainage issues and ensure that peatlands are integrated into climate action strategies. The project will officially launch in March 2025 during Uganda Water and Environment Week. It will be implemented in close collaboration with key stakeholders, including Uganda’s Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE), Rwanda’s Ministry of Environment, NGOs, academia, local communities, and the private sector. The P4P Project is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). #WorldWetlandsDay #Peat4People #Sustainability #PeatlandManagement #ClimateAction #EnvironmentalConservation

💡 Turning Training into Action: Combating Human Trafficking at the Kenya-Uganda Border 🌍 The Busia border, one of East Africa's busiest crossings, is a critical point in the fight against #HumanTrafficking. To address this challenge, CIVIPOL through the GIZ coordinated Better Migration Management (BMM) Programme, funded by the European Union and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), conducted an immersive multi-agency simulation training. Working in close collaboration, police, immigration and labour officers, prosecutors, and NGO workers intervened jointly for strengthened action against trafficking and for the protection of the victims. 🔎 Training Highlights: - Reporting trafficking cases: Gathering, assessing, and acting on critical information while identifying and supporting victims. - Executing operations: Planning and carrying out raids, including meticulous crime scene investigations. - Handling suspects: Employing ethical arrest and interview techniques. 👩⚖️ For Prosecutors: - Strengthening collaboration with national and international partners to dismantle the trafficking criminal networks and seize their assets. - Building strong cases to ensure justice is served in court. These initiatives are more than just training - they represent a commitment to safe migration, justice, and the protection for vulnerable migrants. #SafeMigration #FightHumanTrafficking #CIVIPOL

Happy World Wetlands Day! Today, on Wetlands Day 2025, we join the world in remembering the vital role of wetland ecosystems in our well-being. With support from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection, and partners the Nile Basin Initiative Secretariat, the Ministry of Water and Environment MWE, and the Micheal Succow Foundation, GIZ Uganda supports wetland conservation by strengthening the capacity of partner institutions in wetland management planning, mapping, monitoring, and ecosystem assessment with a focus on #Peatlands and their integration into national strategies, such as the Nationally Determined Contributions. This year, GIZ Uganda will launch the Sustainable Management of Peatlands in Uganda project (#Peat4People). The project aims to strengthen the technical and financial capacities of partner institutions, improve policy frameworks, and promote regional and international collaboration on peatlands management. We reaffirm our commitment to supporting the sustainable management of wetlands in Uganda to enhance the resilience of communities that depend on such ecosystems.
