We've just wrapped up an insightful and engaging session with the amazing digital storyteller @KarlShakur who shared his remarkable journey from a bored architecture student to a celebrated digital storyteller. His visit to our newsroom was an educational masterclass. Our Switchers @MorganWagaba and @MelissaAmpumuza delved deep into the art of digital creation, discussing everything from the importance of consistency, and personal expression, to the power of authenticity in telling stories.

Caroline Asiimwe’s efforts to protect Uganda’s endangered species have earned her the prestigious TWAS-Samira Omar Prize. This award honors scientists from countries with emerging economies who create innovative solutions to global challenges. A veterinarian and conservation leader, Asiimwe has transformed poachers into eco-guards, engaged refugees, and empowered youth in forest-edge communities to join the fight against poaching and habitat loss. Her work is safeguarding Uganda’s mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, and biodiversity while providing sustainable livelihoods for local communities. With over 26,500 species facing extinction worldwide, Asiimwe’s story shows how one person’s commitment can spark impactful change. “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." - Maya Angelou Muhammad Ssegirinya, known as 'Mr. Update', embodied this sentiment throughout his leadership. More than just a Ugandan politician, he was a humanitarian and a voice of truth as a journalist. Serving as Kawempe North’s Member of Parliament under the National Unity Platform, he was a fervent advocate for grassroots activism, significantly impacting his community by establishing a hospital and relentlessly amplifying the voices of young people and the marginalized. Tragically, Ssegirinya passed away on January 9, 2025, at Lubaga Hospital, succumbing to an illness that was exacerbated by his harrowing two-year imprisonment from 2021. Despite his suffering, his spirit remained unbroken, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered not by his words or deeds alone, but by the profound impact he had on the lives he touched. Today, Ugandans from all walks of life are coming together to celebrate his life, his service, and his dedication to uplifting the marginalized. Meet Agatha Atuhaire, a Ugandan lawyer, human rights defender, and freelance journalist who, having experienced firsthand the consequences of poor governance, dedicated herself to exposing corruption and maladministration with the aim of forging a better Uganda. Agatha's activism has not gone unnoticed, earning her international acclaim, including the EU Human Rights Defenders Award in 2023, the 2024 International Women of Courage Award, and recognition on the TIME100 Next 2024 List. She is renowned for her incisive investigations into parliamentary misconduct and the inefficiencies of public institutions, courageously confronting the powerful despite facing threats for her truth-telling.
