We're so excited to welcome our first eight projects to #CFAUganda who were selected from over 160 applications! It was great to meet you last week - we're really looking forward to working with you. The hard work has already begun with the first capacity building session delivered by our gender equality and social inclusion expert Vidya Naidu this morning. Here's some more information on each of these fantastic Ugandan climate projects: Clean Energy partnership for Africa (CEPA) Limited  - driving a market shift from conventional to sustainable fuel sources by providing affordable and eco-friendly bioenergy products, such as un-carbonized pellets and matching stoves, bioethanol, and bio-based power. Kyamuhunga Tea Company Limited - modernising tea processing by integrating renewable energy, and incorporating sustainability initiatives. This aims to increase operational efficiency, reduce environmental impact, empower local farmers and introduce data-driven decision making.   NLS Waste Services - waste to energy facility. The plant will have the capacity to incinerate around 1,300 tonnes of waste generated in the Kampala area each day to produce 115 MW of thermal power.   Protone Energies Limited - solar energy battery refurbishment aimed at doubling the lifetime of a battery at 38% of the cost of a new one. Services include battery refurbishment, re-utilising decommissioned batteries and scheduling maintenance to extend their lifespan.   Silver Fleet Limited - an electric vehicle taxi fleet solution to transition a taxi company, which clients can access via an online platform and mobile app. Kwanza Infrastructure Group - Hydroelectric power projects on the Sisi, Simu and Ngenge rivers in Eastern Uganda using run-of-river technology. The project of capacity 30.3 MW will generate 26,543 mwh per year sufficient to power 22,120 households with clean power and increase supply to support the energy transition. Umeme Ltd - promoting the adoption of cooking with electricity in Uganda by scaling up the existing pilot at Umeme Ltd and its partners from 1,500 to 50,000 electric pressure cookers to support the government's energy agenda. To enable customers to purchase a quality electric pressure cooker at any Umeme office/branch or via the Umeme app or website. Zembo - motorcycle and battery charging services targeting the ‘boda boda’ (motorcycle taxi) industry in Uganda. If you're a Ugandan based investor and you would like to learn more about these businesses and hear their pitches please register your interest in attending our event on Monday 4 March in Kampala. Introducing ‘Waste Management for Safe Environment and Climate Resilient Livelihoods’ 🌱 We're proud to feature one of our 2023 DGBP maturation projects, with Eastern Archdiocesan Development Network (EADEN) and Biofertilizer Africa Ltd. This initiative in Uganda is promoting agricultural sustainability while simultaneously addressing the waste challenge. 🌍 In a region where agriculture is pivotal yet challenged by degradation and climate change, this pilot project will be converting local biomass waste into high-quality, tailored, and organic fertiliser. By providing training and resources for smallholder farmers in agroecology and organic fertilisers, the project supports the shift towards environmentally friendly and climate-smart agricultural practices. 🌾 With the production and distribution of biofertilisers, the project is set to improve soil health, agro-biodiversity, and overall farm productivity. By boosting farm productivity and smallholder farmers' incomes while simultaneously reducing waste, this project is creating a win-win for the environment and the economy. "From Childhood Lessons to Global Concerns: The Urgent Call for Responsible Waste Management in Uganda" Growing up deep upcountry in kimukunda village (Kyotera District) Uganda, I was fortunate to have a father who instilled in us the importance of proper waste disposal, he actually came home on weekends the other days he was away for work, Eddie always left work for us to do within the course of the week ‘picking coffee, hand pollinating vanilla et al, however he was very strict not to find any polyethene (kaveera)/trash around home he even reached a point of telling us to pick from our neighbours!. His teachings, coupled with the disciplined environment of the seminary (Bukalasa) where every class had a dustbin, in our cubicles, cell leaders were strict on ‘gustes’ responsible! Every corner had a dustbin, that shaped my perspective on the significance of maintaining a clean and healthy environment. Recently, the visit of German #TopKurs students hosted by UNYFA an Umbrella of Young Farmers’ Federation Uganda highlighted the stark contrast between their waste management practices and the alarming state of waste disposal in Uganda. One of them wanted to know why we litter, and jokingly Kabiito Denis the CEO of UNYFA handed over the question to me uhmmm!!! This has ignited a deep concern within me, prompting a reflection on the lessons from my childhood and a call for urgent action. The Early Lessons: In the embrace of my father's teachings, every corner of our home and the seminary was adorned with dustbins. It was a norm, a way of life that transcended the boundaries of our immediate surroundings. The act of responsibly managing waste was not just a chore but a duty we carried with pride. It was an ethos that echoed the sentiment that the environment we live in is a shared responsibility. Contrasting Experiences: Fast forward to the present, and the contrast is stark. The pervasive issue of trash disposal in Uganda is evident everywhere, from residential areas to roadsides. The recent visit by German students, who are accustomed to a culture of discipline and environmental awareness, only served to accentuate the glaring disparity. The stark reality is that our society is grappling with an escalating waste crisis, and the time to address it is now. Personal Dilemmas: Amidst this disheartening reality, I find myself wrestling with personal dilemmas. A simple act of removing the top cover from a water bottle becomes a moral dilemma as I hand it back to the seller, only to be met with indifference and a casual "dump it there." The disconnect between individual actions and their impact on the environment is alarming, and it is a reflection of the urgent need for a cultural shift towards responsible waste management. #Kcca Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability (CCES) #dailymonitor
