📍 Did you know a single apple can turn your potatoes into a sprouting mess? It's all about ethylene gas! Climacteric fruits like apples and bananas release it, accelerating ripening (and spoilage) in their non-climacteric counterparts, like strawberries and grapes. What other surprising produce pairings have you learned to avoid? 💬 Comment below!🍎🥔 Understanding climacteric vs. non-climacteric produce is key to longer shelf life. That's where KaFresh post-harvest spray comes in, extending freshness for both types! Are you just about to harvest fruits and vegetables? Talk to us about how KaFresh can give you more freshness, more time, and more profit!

Biotechnology
Biotech company using nature to solve humanity's greatest challenges, starting with post harvest losses.
About us
SioValley Technologies is an East African startup dedicated to solving humanity's greatest challenges with nature. Our first product to market, KaFresh, helps extend the shelf life by of produce by 2-300% at room temperature- naturally! As an extraordinary example, we've been able to successfully keep tomatoes fresh for 180 days. KaFresh consists of 4 simple oils distilled from plants which slows the respiration of plants, slowing ripening. The simplicity of the solution enables flexibility- it works across value chains, from everything like fruit (e.g., mangoes, citrus, avocados, berries, pineapple, etc), veggies (e.g., kunde, mtoo, sukuma wiki), horitculture (e.g., lavender, geranium), and flowers (e.g., roses, lillies). We believe that everyone has an opportunity to enjoy fresh plants, no matter who or where they are. Find out more: www.siovalley.tech

Meet FloriFresh, Botrytis' Greatest Nemesis 🥊 FloriFresh has become an essential solution in the fight against botrytis, a stubborn fungus that often develops resistance to fungicides. Paul, the technical supervisor at Simbi Roses Limited, found that nothing worked on their Orange Wave Roses until he tried FloriFresh, which now continues to effectively prevent and control the disease at the farm. Botrytis is one of the most destructive diseases in the European flower market, a major destination for Kenya's flower exports. If you're a grower or exporter struggling to control this disease, contact us today and let's chat about how to introduce botrytis to its new nemesis, FloriFresh. https://siovalley.tech/ | +254 798 601544

🦁 Back Real African Lions—Not Just Simba on Disney+ 📺 East Africa presents incredibly exciting and unique opportunities for startups in both B2B and B2C sectors—thanks to mobile payments and direct-to-consumer models. These startups offer attractive margins and high impact potential. Especially the female founders (about half of the startups in our portfolio are led by women!) impressed me in Kenya’s still largely patriarchal society. These are some of my reflections after an intense and inspiring week of conversations with #develoPPPVentures portfolio companies, as well as meetings with startups and investors alongside Africa Tech Summit hosted by GSMA - Mobile for Development and Scaling digital Agriculture Innovations through Start-ups (SAIS) If you're interested in working with startups as an investor or mentor, please reach out! Below is an overview of the 10 portfolio startups we met that are completing Phase A of the program: - Melanin Kapital – A climate fintech platform that provides capital to SMEs investing in green assets, using data-driven carbon credits. - tappi – A growth engine that helps small business owners harness the power of direct-to-consumer (D2C) marketing. - Irri-Hub KE – IoT-powered drip irrigation systems for smallholder farmers, integrating data analytics to optimize resource use and crop cycles. - Sio Valley Technologies – An innovative company developing edible coatings to extend the shelf life of agricultural products and advanced formulas to support seedling ripening. - Flexpay – A "save now, buy later" solution for durable goods, education, and groceries, transforming the way people save and spend. - Malaica – A maternity care provider working to reduce maternal mortality and healthcare costs in Kenya’s system. - eProd Solutions Limited – An ERP system designed for smallholder farmers, improving traceability, access to credit and financial management. - Cliniva – A healthcare provider focused on women’s health, combining neighborhood clinics with telemedicine solutions. - Figorr – An IoT-enabled cold chain monitoring solution for pharmaceuticals and Kenya’s flower export industry. - GoBEBA – A quick-commerce platform for essential bulky household goods like cooking gas and water, tailored to the needs of Kenyan households. 👉 Check out the full portfolio here: https://lnkd.in/eDwcffDT Niklas Fischer Julia Stausberg-Umuerri Daniel Thomann Marco Christ Hannah Milberg Barbara von Toll Phillip Tettenborn VC4A

Action, Urgency & Momentum in Innovation Huge congratulations to Jean-Paul Nageri and the team at Sio Valley Technologies! Your rapid progress since the #Youth #IDEAthon is nothing short of remarkable. Reflecting on your journey, your success is proof of what Uganda’s entrepreneurial ecosystem can achieve when innovation is nurtured rather than stifled by bureaucracy. Too often, key stakeholders remain bogged down in compliance and box-ticking, rather than enabling entrepreneurs and the support organisations that empower them. Timing, momentum, and speed to market are crucial - yet, more often than not, unnecessary delays drain resources and force many promising startups to shut down before they can scale. This challenge is more pronounced in Africa, where most early stage start-up funding does not come from VCs but rather from governments and donor agencies in the form of grants. While well-intentioned, these grants often come with rigid conditions, slow disbursements, and excessive restrictions on how start-ups can or cannot use the funds, leaving little room for pivoting - a crucial factor in any startup’s success. With the rise of AI, this need for speed of execution has never been more critical. Startups no longer have the luxury of waiting months - let alone years - to bring ideas to market. Those that move quickly - as ChatGPT has demonstrated - will capture opportunities, attract investment, and scale, while those caught in bureaucratic bottlenecks risk being left behind. On this note, I'd like to congratulate - and I am also proud to have supported - passionate minds like Prof. ERNEST ABAHO and colleagues in attempting to craft Uganda’s #Startup #Policy - a critical step in creating a more enabling environment for entrepreneurs in Uganda. I am also grateful for organisations like Mastercard Foundation, which continue to invest in SME growth and ecosystem development on the African Continent. Now, the challenge is to operationalise this policy and unlock more success stories like Sio Valley. I look forward to supporting any such efforts. Ecosystem Support Organisations and donor agencies supporting high-growth startups across Africa must also re-evaluate their approach. Streamlining processes and fast-tracking market entry for ventures with real potential should be a priority. Above all, they need to adopt an "entrepreneurial mindset", focusing on agility as well as impact. Once again, huge congratulations to Jean-Paul Nageri, co-founder Trevor Siu and the entire Sio Valley team. Your journey is truly inspiring. And to the entire rest of the Youth IDEAthon cohort who are also making strides - I see you. Keep pushing, keep innovating, and don’t settle. #EntrepreneurshipEcosystems #Innovation #EcosystemGrowth #Startups #SMEs #StartupPolicy Birmingham City University Makerere University Business School
