List to our team members Winnie Tushabe and Ahmed sharing how we make the soil Healthy!
How do you nourish soil? This #WorldSoilDay, Re-Alliance members are reflecting on the importance of healthy, living soil and how they build soil in their work. Re-Alliance Trustee Gideon Adeyeni says, "soil is our life support system... The regeneration of our planet begins with us caring for soil." Re-Alliance member and co-founder of YICE Uganda, Winnie Tushabe acknowledges that, "a healthy soil is a habitat to many living things." YICE work with refugees across Uganda to support their needs and livelihoods through regeneration and #Permaculture design. Their Permaculture and food-forest inspired gardens help boost biodiversity, feed families and communities - and it all begins with healthy soils. How do they do it? "We practice minimal tillage to protect the soil. We practice mulching to prevent soil erosion and degradation." YICE also recently worked in partnership with Re-Alliance to trial Ecosan composting toilets in Nakivale Refugee Settlement, which creates rich humanure and nutrient-dense urine fertiliser that feeds soils, perfect for use with tree crops. YICE team member Mohammed comments, "healthy soils provide the nutrients we need to grow nutritious food, protect our water supply, and even help combat climate change." Many thanks to the wonderful network of Re-Alliance members who are deeply engaging with their ecosystems to build and nourish healthy soils every day, not just on World Soil Day.
