This week in business…   We’ve been re-visiting our Mission, Vision and Values to make sure they still represent us as a business. As we started to get increasingly pedantic about every word and comma, the inevitable question came out: “Why are we doing this?” Are these things just 1990s business brochure fads that have become unnecessary today? Or should we simply be pressing a button and letting AI come up with the perfect words? We agreed quite quickly that they do matter and that embedding our Mission, Vision and Values into our everyday working lives will help us understand where we’re going and plot an accurate course to get there. Saying this in a more poetic way, Dave Foster, CEO of brand and marketing agency AvreaFoster writes: “the vision is your North Star and the mission is your compass.” Of course, maritime metaphors are in our DNA here at 1492, after all we were named for the year Christopher Columbus set off on one of history’s most epic voyages. We do believe that recruitment, done well, is a voyage of discovery. There will always be risks and sometimes the end result isn’t what you had envisioned but if you look hard enough sometimes results are better than you expected...... but you need to explore first. Elsewhere, Sandie celebrated her birthday this week and her netball team ended the season as undefeated champs. We’re also getting ready to hit Manchester next week to tackle the Crystal Maze for our Christmas party. It can’t be worse than last year when we spectacularly failed to break out of a hotel-themed escape room. Chris Columbus would not have been impressed.
