What drives the modern Middle Eastern travelling shopper? 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗺𝗶𝘅, 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲 & 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲. Getting to know your shoppers is a vital part of the modern travel retail sector, and as the Middle East market grows in importance – with key airports such as Doha, Dubai and Jeddah, alongside the growing spending power of shoppers in the region – it is vital to understand what drives these consumers. 1. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗺𝗶𝘅 – Shoppers in the MEA region like to plan their purchases. Data from Pi Insight show that almost half of these consumers - 44% - will know what they are looking for. So product mix and presentation are key in driving footfall and conversion. 2. 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 – Despite the claims of some, price remains a key issue in travel retail, and that is as true in the Middle East as elsewhere. About a fifth of MEA travellers cite a good price as a driver for purchase, while it can be an obstacle for an even greater proportion of shoppers. 3. 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 – frontline staff are the key to travel retail success and almost two-thirds of MEA travellers would choose to speak with staff, and about 25% attribute their purchase to staff engagement. These figures underline the vital importance of staff engagement and ensuring that your frontline teams have the information and strategies at their fingertips to deliver exactly the treatment your shoppers need. Our Strategic Mystery Shopping team see these issues first-hand as they walk in the shoes of travelling shoppers every day, delivering bespoke insights for brands and travel retailers to help unlock the next level of service. Why Brands Need Direct Control Over Their Travel Retail Stores. In the fast-evolving travel retail landscape, giving brands direct control over their stores is no longer a luxury—it’s a necessity. Here’s why: 1. Authentic Brand Experience – A brand-managed store ensures that every detail, from store design to customer engagement, reflects the brand’s true identity and values. 2. Seamless Online & Offline Integration – Travelers engage with brands digitally before, during, and after their journey. Direct control allows for smooth omnichannel experiences, connecting pre-trip browsing with in-store conversions. 3. Tailored Offer for Specific Travelers – Every airport has a unique shopper demographic. A brand-led store can curate product selections, pricing, and marketing to match local consumer preferences. 4. Consistent Training & Service Excellence – With direct oversight, brands can train staff to deliver superior service, ensuring they provide expert knowledge and a premium shopping experience. 5. Greater Flexibility & Innovation – Trends shift fast in travel retail. Having direct control means brands can react quickly, adjusting their strategies to maximize engagement and sales. The future of travel retail belongs to brands that take ownership of their presence. Is your brand ready to take control? If so, find out how we at 2.0 & Partners can help you: https://lnkd.in/eSpVV3qp #TravelRetail #BrandExperience #DutyFree #LuxuryRetail #Omnichannel

"The big ideas in business are often very obvious, but it’s very hard to maintain a firm grasp of the obvious at all times." What is the obvious for travel retail? What are the key focuses which define the business, and which will be as true for shoppers in 10 years as they are today? In this week's column, our Senior Executive VP Marco Passoni looks at what sets the travel retail sector apart, and whether the market is sometimes too clever for its own good when it comes to building the future. Bringing Your Brand Experience to Life in Travel Retail In travel retail, authenticity is everything. Your brand experience isn’t just about selling a product—it’s about creating a memorable interaction that resonates with travelers in a meaningful way. But how do you achieve that in a fast-paced, high-traffic airport environment? 🔹 Be Direct & Immersive Travellers have limited time—your brand story needs to be immediate, engaging, and easy to grasp. Whether through immersive activations, interactive digital elements, or sensory experiences, make every second count. 🔹 Legitimacy Builds Trust In a market where travellers actively seek genuine, high-quality products, ensuring authentic brand presence is non-negotiable. The right store location, well-trained staff, and a clear brand message all reinforce credibility. 🔹 Tailor Your Experience to the Traveller Not all shoppers are the same. Cultural relevance, price transparency, and seamless service make a difference—whether it's a luxury customer looking for exclusivity or a value-conscious buyer seeking a duty-free advantage. The best travel retail brands don’t just sell—they immerse, engage, and build trust. The question is: is your brand delivering an experience that travellers will remember? #TravelRetail #BrandExperience #LuxuryRetail #DutyFree #RetailMarketing
