Congratulations to the founders of Inventors Defense Alliance for launching this excellent initiative to help start-ups, small businesses and entrepreneurs to access capital and defend their IP rights. Inventors face threats from well-resourced companies that infringe on their patents and designs, and most small companies cannot afford expensive patent litigation to enforce their rights. Third-party funding allows these innovators a chance to fight back, enabling them to fund the legal costs of patent litigation. The lobby group’s goal is to protect their access to capital and the justice system. Otherwise, innovators are unable to enforce their rights and accused infringers will get away with infringement, stifling innovation and entrepreneurialism. 4 Rivers Services supports the initiative wholeheartedly!! Most of us have read and/or listened to the debate about non-lawyer ownership of law firms. The debate will roll on for many years, particularly if/when other US states join Arizona, Utah and the District of Columbia. This article by Roy Ginsburg highlights some of the issues and concerns. Our mission at 4 Rivers Services is to enable law firms to grow by providing solutions for cash flow, expertise and resources. Allowing external investment in firms, and ownership positions for key non-legal personnel who are skilled in strategy, finance, marketing and IT, are extremely useful tools to achieve that goal.
