  • A great story in the press this week on our Founder & CEO, Lyndsey Simpson, on why she started 55/Redefined and how she came to be a world-leading authority on age in the workplace. “The likes of Barclays and Diageo, Warner Brothers, AXA, big brands in their industries, all came on board pretty much at the same time. What was interesting is that several of them had already been identifying the value of over 50s. We were able to bring a voice to their work and to their data. Barclays is a great example. They have already spent the last five years or so creating returnship programmes for people in their 50s. In their customer-facing channels they had better customer outcomes when they used somebody with more life experience to handle complexity. Barclays found that, by improving customer service in its call centres, job attrition went down, employees were happy to have a job, absenteeism also went down, and older employees working shifts showed up for work on time and were enthusiastic." Get the headlines and links below 👇 RISE IN OVER 50S ON ZERO HOURS CONTRACTS More than 300,000 workers over the age of 50 are employed on zero-hours contracts - up 120,000 a decade ago, according to new analysis of official statistics which found over 50s make up 26% of the UK's zero hours workforce - https://ow.ly/qNe650Vcstm LINK BETWEEN INSECURE WORK AND EMPLOYMENT DROP-OFF People in insecure work in their 50s are less likely to still be in work in their 60s, according to research cited in a TIME article. Harvard professor Lisa Berkman said about half of Americans lack steady employment in their 50s and only a third of these people will work in their 60s, compared to 80% of those stably employed in their 50s - https://ow.ly/VUiW50Vcsti EMPLOYERS MISSING OUT ON TALENT IN THE HIRING PROCESS 82% of job applications never get viewed, according to a US survey of over half a million hourly employees by hiring platform Sprockets. In an article for Forbes, AJ Richichi ⚙️🕒, CEO of Sprockets, addresses how age bias might affect screening and how to avoid it - https://lnkd.in/eSmq2vfh REFORM BENEFITS TO GET PEOPLE BACK TO WORK The benefits system needs to be reformed to address the high rate of people on disability and incapacity benefits, which is partly driven by the UK's ageing workforce, according to think tank the Resolution Foundation. It calls on the government to close the gap between basic benefits and health-related benefits by redistributing levels of support into basic awards and says more attention is needed on moving people off benefits and into work through better-designed, more regular assessments - https://ow.ly/zwWJ50Vcsto OLDER IT WORKERS HAVE HIGHER WORKLOADS A generational difference in workload, with older IT workers and managers experiencing the longest working weeks, is rapidly exacerbating issues around burnout, according to a new report by software company Auvik. • We don't often post much about our team on LinkedIn, but this personal story was too good not to give you all a peek behind the curtain! Hi, I'm Kelsey, the Marketing Manager at 55/Redefined, and I manage the company page (among many other things). My grandparents have just been lucky enough to make it on BBC News last week for celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary!💍 We don't hear about this happening every day, but the 100 year life is now and 70th+ wedding anniversaries will only become more common. My grandparents retired in their early 60s, over 30 years ago now. Neither of them ever thought they'd make it this far, but are now looking back at a third of their adult life spent in retirement. Is this the dream, or a missed opportunity? One thing is for sure; their children have worked for longer, and their grandchildren and great grandchildren likely will too. I have only just reached level 30 myself, but I'm well aware that levels 50+ won't be the beginning of the end - just the start of my second act! For those wondering what makes a marriage strong enough to last over 70 years, my grandparents advise patience, forgiveness, never going to bed angry, and plenty of wine! Learn more about their story in their BBC article here: https://lnkd.in/ec-_xTse

  • Keep up to date with all this week's top age inclusion news, including the latest on the impact of AI on ageism 👇 AGEISM UNDERMINING AI EFFECTIVENESS A Harvard Business Review article argues that only an intergenerational effort will enable AI to realise its full potential in the workplace, but employers are being held back by ageist attitudes. It also identifies older 'power users' who could play a critical role in AI policy roll-out - https://ow.ly/WfNV50V863v AI CAN HELP DE-BIAS HIRING The potential economic contribution of workers 50+ could increase by $3.9 trillion if age bias was eradicated - and AI can help, according to Ann Manby of CWI Labs Labs and The Center for Workforce Inclusion. She argues that AI can help reduce age bias by flagging ageist language, standardising interviews and focusing on qualifications over demographic factors in hiring processes - https://ow.ly/efxz50V863u LAW FIRM LOSES AGE DISCRIMINATION CASE A tribunal has ruled against law firm Walker Morris after it forced a former equity partner to retire at 63. It ruled that requiring partners over 60 to reapply for their positions was discriminatory and said there was no evidence that older partners' performance declines - https://lnkd.in/ehzDBWwx GEN X LEAST CONFIDENT ABOUT RETIREMENT SAVINGS Generation X are the least likely to feel on track for a comfortable retirement, according to a survey for Annuity Ready. Just 28% felt on track, compared to 50% of millennials and 37% of Baby Boomers. 17% of Generation X are worried about never being able to fully retire - https://ow.ly/EeQh50V863s Improve recruitment processes by tapping into the only growing talent pool - the over-50s! 55/Redefined are the most trusted global platform for over-50s and those looking to engage with them. Are you a risk or reward decision maker? Thanks to People Management magazine for featuring me & 55/Redefined in this update on age discrimination. I am definately more in favour of the carrot (massive business case benefits for attracting, engaging and retaining over 50s talent, such as reduced absenteeism and a 5 fold reduction in attrition) than the stick (you will get sued approach), but…for those companies that are driven via risk aversion - this is essential reading…👇 https://lnkd.in/eBexszKh

  • What’s the latest on age and business? We’ve got you covered. It’s been a big week in the world of age discrimination and DE&I. Here’s your one-stop news roundup to stay informed 👇 UK HAS 'PERVASIVE AGEIST CULTURE', SAY MPS Older people face discrimination at work, in the media and accessing public services which is often downplayed in comparison to other forms of discrimination. This is according to a report from the Women and Equalities Committee which calls for a review of protections against age discrimination. The Times reports: https://ow.ly/Ns8F50V44OY GENDER PAY GAP WIDENS WITH AGE Women in their 50s face the widest gender pay gap [18.9% compared to the average of 13.1%], according to data compiled by the TRADES UNION CONGRESS FOR ENGLAND which says this is due to women balancing unpaid caring responsibilities alongside their careers - https://ow.ly/knXE50V4bVa COST OF AGEISM GETTING HIGHER The average compensation awarded in successful age discrimination cases increased 624% in 2022-23, to £103,000, according to law firm Fox & Partners LLC and the Financial Times. If that doesn’t make businesses rethink how they treat older workers, what will? - https://ow.ly/Swck50V4bV5 CO-OP DOUBLES DOWN ON DEI While others scale back, the Co-op is staying the course. CEO Shirine Khoury-Haq says there’s no plan to ditch DEI initiatives and 'risk undoing decades of progress', The Guardian reports. The message is clear—prioritising fairness isn’t just a business strategy; it’s a commitment to better workplaces and better outcomes. https://ow.ly/I8UK50V4bV7 Stateside, it’s a different story. Big names like KPMG and Citigroup are retreating on diversity measures, citing changing political pressures. What will this mean for global organisations aiming to maintain inclusive workforces? https://ow.ly/fkkC50V4bVb LEGAL ACTION THREATENED BY WASPI WOMEN The Waspi campaign for women hit by the state pension age change has sent a “letter before action” to the Department for Work and Pensions, warning of high court proceedings if the government continues to refuse to pay compensation for alleged failure to warn them adequately of the change - https://lnkd.in/eckiHsCU REVERSE MENTORING FLIPS THE SCRIPT The legal profession is witnessing a shift towards "reverse mentoring" - a process built on mutual respect - which involves junior lawyers mentoring their senior counterparts to boost inclusivity and understanding of diverse backgrounds, according to law firm Clarke Willmott - https://ow.ly/o3RR50V4bV9 What’s your take on this week's news stories? • Age discrimination payouts have skyrocketed by 624% 📈 in the past few years alone, with the average payout £103,000 last year according to Emma Jacobs and the Financial Times — and this is just the tip of the iceberg. Our CEO & Founder, Lyndsey Simpson, is quoted in the FT this morning sharing compelling insights on why businesses need to take age seriously. Here's what she had to say👇 🟣 Older workers bring immense value to organisations—lower absenteeism, higher loyalty, and unmatched adaptability gained from decades of navigating change. 🟣 With the average cost of recruitment sitting at $4,000 per hire, retaining experienced employees is not just ethical—it’s good business. 🟣 This isn’t about diversity—it’s about redefining age as a unifying factor. We’re at a pivotal moment. Employers who don’t have a proactive age strategy are missing out on the fastest-growing talent and consumer market. Multigenerational workforces are the future and companies need strategies that elevate age inclusivity across hiring, retention, and workplace policies - or they will pay the increasingly higher price. 📖 Read the full FT article to learn more about this critical workplace issue: https://lnkd.in/ed6mQFd6 💬 For expert advice in hiring, managing and retaining a mutigenerational workforce, speak to our friendly team: https://lnkd.in/e2kkebKm #InspiredNotRetired
