SECRET SAUCE in transformation. Always, ALWAYS ask for a % confidence in the forecast dates. Would you undergo an operation without knowing the % chance to survive? Why would you invest ££££££ without knowing when you are LIKELY to see the benefits? % Confidence is one of the most universally missed metrics in project management and transformation. It requires leaders to become ACCOUNTABLE. Typical project convo: CEO: "When will the project deliver?" PM "3 months", although it is high risk. CEO: Ok, make it happen. This is where the convo stops. Investigating the risks finds issues, issues that mean there is no chance the project will deliver, e.g. IF we don't get resources THEN the project will delay... ...But, if you don't have resources, THEN the forecast is worthless! Improved Convo: CEO: Have you got the resources to deliver this project? PM: No CEO: So you can't deliver in 3 months then? PM: Erm, well, I guess not. CEO: So, when will you deliver, for definite? PM: I don't know, X is off the project, Y is overloaded with other work ... 7Q Convo: The % confidence is GAME changing! CEO: How confident are you that you will deliver in 3 months? PM: 20% CEO: When would your 100% date be? PM: 8 months, assuming no more projects are started.... CEO: What specifically do we need to do to deliver in 3 months with 90% confidence? Monday Motivation... Focus on what you CAN influence, change or control. Find peace with that you cannot. Many years ago, I remember my boss giving me some really great advice, and it's the same advice I tell my kids. I was getting really frustrated with aspects of the business that in reality were outside of my own responsibilities and things I could not influence. I was losing a lot of energy being frustrated and fedup. When you care, it is easy to fall into this trap. Every thought, feeling, and aspect of your being that focuses on things you can't control is WASTED energy, LOST investment, and is generally toxic to your well-being. At all times, have a focus, have a direction, know what you can influence, prioritise the things that will make the biggest positive impact, and do those things. If you really don't like your environment, change it. In the words of Jim Rohn, "You are not a tree". This is similar to when I help businesses. Developing a clear purpose and direction for the business, identifying worthy investments to improve performance and profitability, and stopping activities that aren't yielding benefits or contributing to the vision.
