This week we welcome our new CEO Charly Richardson. Charly is a local resident and comes to us having led the brilliant @LewishamMusic for the past 5+ years. He therefore brings a deep knowledge and understanding of the area, alongside a raft of experience in both Charity Leadership and Social Justice. Charly's career began as a touring musician before moving into roles and organisations which use music to empower and strengthen communities. As the organisation faces another year on the front line of the homelessness crisis- we're excited for the much needed harmony, new sounds and resilience Charly will bring. Given our building's history as (various) live music venues, it feels fitting that he was drawn here and will lead the organisation through its next chapter. .

James is now a volunteer with us, bringing his expertise to services like our rough sleeper breakfast for people in early stage homelessness. Seeing people like James at this stage in their journey – people who've managed to put homelessness behind them for good – can inspire vital hope in what are often bleak times for the newly homeless. Staff and volunteers with lived experience of homelessness are considered experts in their field by 999 Club. And our Members’ Committee (of which James is a member) input and inform on all major decisions made by the organisation – including senior recruitment and strategy at all levels. Most importantly, they are beacons of hope for our new members – living proof that life can and could be happy, full and purposeful again. Your donations mean that we can continue to support people who've experienced homelessness, like James, to rebuild their lives. Our services are provided all year long – so please consider donating to the 999 Club this winter and beyond. ➡️ To donate today, go to: https://lnkd.in/eVH5njrf

So pleased to see the brilliant documentary ‘Someone’s Daughter, Someone’s Son’ (about today’s homelessness crisis) now streamable on YouTube. Art and deft storytelling make their mark on audiences in a very different way to stats and headlines. And it’s far too often overlooked as a critical tool in the process of shifting public consciousness and mobilising change. If you’ve not seen it already. Check it out and spread the word. The world needs more films like this one.
In the world of independent documentary making, the search for funding never ends. Earlier this year Dartmouth released Lorna Tucker's film about homelessness Someone’s Daughter, Someone’s Son to rave reviews and appreciative cinema audiences. But we were not able to bring the film to a wider audience because of the costs of clearing some archive material in the film. I was explaining this at a screening of the film last week at The Conduit Club, organised by the housing charity 999 Club, when someone asked me how much this would cost. I told them and they said if we had a credible marketing plan for the film, we could have the money by Christmas. This person was Keith Dicker. Fortunately, our plan passed his test, the money arrived in the bank this week and the film went up on YouTube this morning. As a result of Keith’s generosity, for which we will be eternally grateful, anyone in the world can now watch the film, with its moving and important message, including an inspiring appearance from Earl Charlton. The run up to Christmas is a particularly challenging time for homeless people and the organisations which help them, so please do watch Lorna’s film and share the link to support their work. And, as Lígia Teixeira of The Centre for Homelessness Impact says at the end of the film what we need is a movement to end homelessness. We hope this film will play its part in building that movement.
