The Innovation Ecosystem report is out today. It recognises that innovation is key to meeting growing healthcare demands, and I’m proud to say I think our industry can help the NHS meet those demands and provide the innovations the report talks about. 20 percent of all private sector R&D in the UK occurs in life sciences firms, creating an estimated 50,000 new jobs in the sector in the 5 years to 2022. (From the report) So what’s holding us back? As the report says, there is a need to significantly increase the capacity, capability and skills of the NHS workforce to undertake innovation work. If we get this right, the opportunities are significant. The life sciences sector’s collaboration with the NHS offers a pathway for transformative healthcare. It is important for the NHS 10-Year Plan and the Innovation and Adoption Strategy to take the report’s recommendations forward to help the NHS genuinely lead healthcare innovation on a global scale. Congrats to Roland Sinker who led the work and the NHSE team for getting this out today. Read the report here https://lnkd.in/exxaedcT

Our colleague Brian Duggan is at the ICS Network National conference today, where he's been catching up with Sarah Walter and Matthew Taylor. Discussions today recognised the value of NHS-industry partnerships, which if done right, benefit patients, the NHS and the company concerned. 'Just do it. There's a high likelihood that by working together you will achieve something greater than the sum of your parts individually.' Tom Nutt, CEO of Meningitis Now reflected on NHS-industry partnerships at our Life Sciences Event earlier this week. Read today's thoughtful article on NHS-industry partnerships from Anna Charles at The King's Fund. As she says, effective collaboration between the NHS and industry is not without challenges and requires effort to get right, but "at their best, industry partnerships can be powerful catalysts for improvements in care, bringing the NHS access to resources to pump-prime change, and to a depth and breadth of skills and expertise..." Our Chief Executive Richard Torbett MBE, Director of Strategic Partnerships Brian Duggan and Medical Director Amit Aggarwal participated in excellent discussions at The King's Fund's Life Sciences conference yesterday. Great to hear a range of perspectives on how industry and the NHS can best work together for the benefit of patients, what the barriers are, and how to solve them. Many thanks to The King's Fund for bringing the NHS, industry, charities and others together to discuss these important issues.
Delighted to join an excellent panel at the King’s Fund’s Life Sciences conference today. Very good discussion on how to support technology adoption in the NHS, the importance of engaging patients, and how to get the best out of partnerships with industry.

I am delighted to have worked with Anna Charles and The King's Fund on this important piece of work published today which highlights how partnerships between the NHS and industry can make a real difference to improving patient care and NHS performance. The report explores four successful projects that have delivered tangible benefits for patients and the NHS across England. These include: 🖋️ Improving outcomes for people with diabetes following acute coronary syndrome in Lincolnshire with Boehringer Ingelheim). 🖋️ Eliminating hepatitis C among people in contact with drug and alcohol services across the NHS Addictions Provider Alliance (with Gilead Sciences). 🖋️ Improving asthma care in Greater Manchester (with AstraZeneca). 🖋️ Enhancing the front-end skin cancer pathway in Lancashire and South Cumbria (with Sanofi). I’ve also written a blog, published today, on how we capitalise on these opportunities and deliver on the ambitions of the NHS and the Government. Published today, a new report by The King's Fund reinforces the case for NHS and life sciences industry partnerships. The findings suggest that if we increase the scale and ambition of the partnerships we undertake with the NHS and others, we could help generate at least two of the three big shifts the Health Secretary wants to see.
