About us
The Academy for the Mathematical Sciences is in its set up phase. We will work together to develop, communicate, teach and use the power of the mathematical sciences to benefit our world. This includes teaching and education, academic research pushing the frontiers of what is known, and the implementation of mathematics in practice. The Academy will be dedicated to supporting the advancement of the field ensuring that it delivers on its potential to enrich our world, by nurturing the people pipeline, and increasing societal engagement and recognition of the value, and indeed beauty, of mathematics. We know that the mathematical sciences improve lives, help people, help society, and improve the economy and productivity.

We are delighted to be working with the Newton Gateway to Mathematics, which is hosting the #Mathsci-comm network event on 21 November 2024. We hope to see lots of you there, and please remember to register. See details below for more information. ____________________________________________________________________________________ 'Communicating Mathematical and Data Sciences – What Does Success Look Like?' Climate change, artificial intelligence, disease modelling and public health – these are just a few of the societal issues that mathematical and data sciences are key to understanding and addressing. It is vital that those outside the research community – including policymakers, mainstream media, and the wider public – are informed about advances in these areas and are part of the discussions about such research. And researchers need professional help to communicate their research and engage with concerns from these wider audiences. This one-day event at the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences will explore evidence for effectively communicating research in mathematical and data science to non-experts. Speakers come from a range of fields, including economics, government, health, neuroscience, as well as mathematics and data science. The event is organised by the #Mathsci-comm network in collaboration with the Newton Gateway to Mathematics. It is supported by the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences and the Knowledge Exchange Hub for Mathematical Sciences. The full programme is now online, registration is open and all are welcome.

Statement from Alison Etheridge, President of the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences Over the last few months, there has been a lot of work behind the scenes at the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences. We have been driving forward the ambitions of the Academy to be an authoritative, persuasive, and influential voice for the whole of the mathematical sciences – and to provide crucial connectivity between academia, education, business, industry, and government. We are very grateful for the continued commitment and support from both within and beyond the mathematical sciences community, and reaffirm our determination to press ahead with the development of a vibrant Academy. We look forward to updating you further in the coming weeks, on both key outputs and on the funding model for the Academy going forward. Alison's statement provides many examples of our ongoing work. Delighted to share this fantastic news item! Academy for the Mathematical Sciences President Alison Etheridge celebrates today's publication of the Academy's reports that show that the mathematical sciences contributed an extraordinary £495 billion a year to the UK economy in 2023 and, more broadly, where she shares her vision on how the Academy will work to shift the dial on the national attitude to maths. A new report by the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences (AcadMathSci) shows that the mathematical sciences contributed an extraordinary £495 billion a year to the UK economy in 2023, representing 20% of total UK Gross Value Added (GVA). The Academy calculated that 4.2 million people were working in jobs that use tools and techniques derived from research in the mathematical sciences. This represents 13% of all UK employment, and includes e.g. scientific researchers, statisticians, software professionals, several different types of engineer, actuaries, and financial analysts. This employment occurs across a range of industries, including banking and finance, insurance, computing, pharmaceuticals, health, and education. The Academy’s analysis further revealed that the economic productivity of workers in mathematical science occupations was 58% higher than the UK average, and that the mean average salaries of these people were 24% higher than the UK average. On Friday, AcadMathSci celebrated one year since its incorporation as a charity with the mission to benefit society through the power of the mathematical sciences. Looking back it has been a busy year, and we’d like to thank everyone from the Mathematical Sciences Community and beyond for their support and encouragement as we work to make this visionary project a reality. First and foremost, we have benefitted from extensive input and engagement from the community to shape our vision for an Academy which brings together academia, education, business, industry, and government, providing critical connectivity for rewiring education, enriching research, fuelling growth, and equipping the UK workforce with the skills required in a modern economy. With over 80 volunteers on the Executive Committee and Advisory Board including senior academics, educators and leaders in business and industry, a joint statement of support from CMS and its constituent learned societies, and an impressive list of named supporters, in addition to attacking the enormous amount of work involved in setting up an organisation from scratch, AcadMathSci is establishing itself as a critical conduit between mathematicians working in academia, education, business, industry, and government. We are naturally very disappointed with the Government’s withdrawal of their commitment of £6m over three years to fund a new National Academy focussed on Mathematical Sciences. The case for a National Academy is compelling and unchanged. We are digesting this news and considering the best way forward. AcadMathSci has already demonstrated that it is well-positioned to provide the essential connectivity between mathematicians working in academia, education, business, industry, and government which will fuel growth and equip the UK workforce for a modern economy. We are grateful for the strong backing of the mathematical sciences community including the Council for the Mathematical Sciences, all its constituent Learned Societies, and beyond. This news is fresh and we have already been inundated with messages of support. Thank you. We will provide an update here and on our website in the coming weeks: https://lnkd.in/eP6y9eT7 Academy of Social Sciences, Association of Teachers of Mathematics (ATM), Axiom Maths, Campaign for Mathematical Sciences (CaMS), Department for Education, Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, Dstl, EPSRC, European Mathematical Society, Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, Institute of Physics, International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS), Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Learned Society of Wales, London Institute for Mathematical Sciences, London Mathematical Society, MEI, National Academy of Sciences, National Numeracy, NCETM, Newton Gateway to Mathematics, Royal Academy of Engineering, Royal Irish Academy, Royal Society of Edinburgh, Royal Statistical Society, Russell Group of Universities, Science Council, Smith Institute, STEM Learning UK, The Academy of Medical Sciences, The Alan Turing Institute, The British Academy, The Mathematical Association, The OR Society, The Royal Society, The Sutton Trust, UK Mathematics Trust, Universities UK, XTX Markets

Huge congratulations to AcadMathSci Executive Committee member Heather Tewkesbury and the rest of the Smith Institute for being awarded this prestigious prize for their work with National Grid. Fantastic work!
We are absolutely delighted to share that we have been awarded the The OR Society's President's Medal for our work in partnership with National Grid ESO on the DRS project. The medal is awarded for the best practical application of operational research. Criteria for judging included: 1. The level of demonstrable benefit 2. The intellectual and novel content of the solution 3. The likely longevity of the solution 4. The excellence of the OR process The explainable model will help ESO better understand where there are uncertainties in its forecasting data, and set energy reserve levels more accurately – potentially limiting the need to keep fossil fuel plants running as back-up, reducing emissions and saving costs. In testing it has demonstrated that it could save over 300 megawatts of reserve each settlement every 30 minutes compared to the existing model. This is akin to roughly the same amount of energy produced by half a nuclear powerplant. Learn more about the project here: https://lnkd.in/eGrmC6XR #OperationalResearch #AIinEnergy #OR66
