Adfam is pleased to support Alcohol Health Alliance UK in writing to Health Secretary Wes Streeting, calling for action to be taken on tackling alcohol harm in 2025 to prevent deaths from alcohol continuing to rise. This follows the news that alcohol-specific deaths in England rose 42% between 2019-2023.

Today we remember everyone who has lost their life to alcohol, and the many family members who are dealing with the loss of their loved ones. New government figures suggest that 8,274 people died from alcohol-specific causes in England in 2023, a 4.6% increase from 2022 (7,912), and a 42% increase compared to 2019 (5,819). These numbers are the highest since records began. Every life lost to alcohol is a tragedy, and dealing with the loss of a loved one can be incredibly challenging. 📰 We've just published our latest Adfam at 40 article, featuring an interview with Craig Knowles, Kinship Family Recovery Worker at Hetty's Charity. Craig has worked at Hetty’s, a charity supporting families affected by a substance use in Nottinghamshire, for 21 years. He explains why the issues faced by kinship families are so different, and talks about Hetty's own specialist service built from scratch to support family members caring for children affected by parental substance issues. Craig also discusses how, despite recent progress in recognition of kinship carers and their needs, there is still a long way to go. Discrepancies remain in terms of support available for kinship carers depending on the type of arrangement, and kinship carers in private or informal arrangements, frequently the case where substance use is a factor, often miss out on support. It is only through the incredible work of local support organisations like Hetty's that kinship carers in private or informal arrangements can access the support they need. Department of Health and Social Care has commissioned Ipsos UK to undertake a drug and alcohol treatment and recovery workforce survey. This is to understand the motivations and experiences of people working in the drug and alcohol treatment and recovery sector and how they can be better supported.   The results of this staff survey will be used to inform work relating to the DHSC’s 10-year strategic plan for the drug and alcohol treatment and recovery workforce (2024-2034), ultimately aiming to create an expanded, skilled and sustainable workforce.   The survey is now live, and we need your help in distributing this survey to your staff team.   Who is the survey for? ✅ Individuals employed in local authority-funded drug and alcohol treatment and recovery roles in England, including community-based, inpatient, residential, and in-reach workers. ✅ Anyone working in a lived experience recovery organisation (LERO) ✅ People involved in local authority commissioning of drug and alcohol services.   Key points about the survey: ⌚ Takes approximately 15 minutes to complete 💻 Will not collect names or employer details, and results shared with DHSC will be anonymised 📆 Closes 24th January 2025   Take part in the survey here: https://lnkd.in/efzFud5x
