Coastal Explorer Intern at Adonis Blue Environmental Consultancy, working with The Crown Estate

🌟 Earlier this month marked the end of my Coastal Explorer Internship🌟 Working with Adonis Blue Environmental and The Crown Estate, as well as Vattenfall and Canterbury City Council as partners, has been the most incredible learning experience. The internship culminated in our final presentations, where we had the opportunity to share our findings on our joint and independent projects to project partners and stakeholders: 📉 I had the opportunity to summarise my personal project findings: a report evaluating the temporal and spatial trends of #DarkBelliedBrentGeese along the north Kent and Essex coastlines, with results highlighting their potential use as indicators of environmental quality. 🌊 Along with my fantastic internship partner Linn Wiberg, we spoke about our joint report critically analysing different #BlueFinance opportunities available for the Transforming the Thames project. More on these projects in the future, but please feel free to reach out in the meantime if you are curious to know more! 👂 Throughout this internship, I have had the privilege of getting involved with projects and events across a variety of marine sectors, encompassing marine and coastal ecology, marine planning and policy, large-scale nature restoration and renewable energy. In addition to completing an independent project, I participated in a variety of ecological surveys, attended conferences, undertook relevant training, as well as organised and created educational resources and outreach activities. This internship has helped me develop professional theoretical and practical skills within the marine sector, whilst also providing me with the opportunity to meet and collaborate with talented individuals. More reflections on this to come! I wanted to say a heartfelt thank you to Sherece Louise Kesner (MSc), Max Renton, Jack Price, Sarah Wren, Chas Holt, Harriet Baldwin, and to the partner organisations I collaborated with. Their support and encouragement throughout the internship has been invaluable. I also wanted to say a massive congratulations and thank you to the other interns Kiera Green, Ed Kirby, Rhys Bowen, Dylan Moses, Ellena Consadine, Alice Parker and Don Harty. It has been wonderful to meet and learn from such enthusiastic people - I can't wait to hear what you all achieve! 🤗 👏 #MarineConservation #NatureConservation #RenewableEnergy #MarineInternship

    North West Coastal Coordinator

Coastal Explorer Internship 2024 - what an opportunity! 💫 This internship fosters collaborative spirit and gives those pursuing a marine career the opportunity to gain much valued practical work experience. Adonis Blue Environmental, The Crown Estate and the partner organizations Vattenfall and Canterbury City Council gave me the opportunity to explore: 🐡Marine Planning and Policy 🐡Ecological Restoration Projects 🐡Renewable Energy and Offshore Wind 🐡Community Outreach 🐡Attend Trainings: Marine Mammal Observer Course, Sea Survival Course 🐡Attend Conferences: ReMeMaRe, Nature Finance Conference 🐟 Over the past 6 months, I undertook an independent research project titled “An Exploration Into Characterizing the Depredation in Kent’s Inshore Fisheries”. I developed project management skills and explored the challenges faced by local fishers. To gather insight, I engaged with a range of stakeholders, from technical experts in underwater video to the fishers experiencing depredation. This culminated in a presentation at The Crown Estate where I shared my research and findings. 🌎 Alongside this, I collaborated with the wonderful Emmie Bowlt to develop a Guide to Blue Finance Opportunities. The purpose was to build an understanding of potential blue finance opportunities for a seascape scale restoration project called Transforming the Thames (TtT). #Bluefinance mechanisms such as #BiodiversityNetGain, #MarineNetGain, #BlueCarbon and #BlueNutrientCredits were discussed and evaluated in a workshop for TtT. Both creating the guide and evaluating the mechanisms taught me about the applicability of such concepts and involved conversations with experts in their fields. 🌻 Through meeting, shadowing and learning from the wonderful staff at Kent Wildlife Trust and Adonis Blue Environmental I was given opportunities to develop professionally at a rate I couldn’t have dreamed of prior to starting the internship. Some highlights include: 🐳Leading a Shoresearch 🦀Shadowing a Wilder Holiday camp 📷Taking part in a camera trapping course run by Dr Amy Fitzmaurice 🪸Learning from local seaweed expert Ian Tittley 💨Learning about offshore wind projects, HRA assessments and leasing processes 🌅Seeing ecological restoration projects in action: A Managed Realignment Site in Essex and restoration of coastal floodplain grazing marsh in Conyer Creek 💡Creating a lesson plan about oysters I cannot recommend this internship enough. A wholehearted thank you to Sherece Louise Kesner (MSc), Max Renton, Lucy Lee, Harriet Baldwin and Sarah Wren for their continuous support. Thank you also to all my fellow interns: Kiera Green, Ed Kirby, Ellena Consadine, Alice Parker, Rhys Bowen, Dylan Moses and Don Harty. Learning from you and alongside you has been a true joy. I’m looking forward to following your journeys and hope to work with you all again in the future ✨ #marineinternship #marineconservation #professionaldevelopment #collaboration

  • As our interns complete their six-month placements, we would like to emphasize their individual research projects and the elements of their experiences that they found most fulfilling. Linn Wiberg's final project, entitled "An Exploration into Characterizing Seal Depredation in Kent’s Inshore Fisheries," provides an engaging perspective on the topic. 🦭 Her project looked into evidencing the interactions, quantifying the current interactions and quantifying the cost of interactions. Notable aspects of the project included her engagement with local fishermen, which allowed her to gain insights into their fishing practices and the adaptations they have made in response to seal depredation. Favorite Aspect: "Leading a Shoresearch survey was a significant highlight. It was immensely enjoyable to connect with the volunteers and discover the various species along the Kent coastline. I encountered a stalked jellyfish for the first time, which is a notable feature of the Thanet Marine Conservation Zone!" #Internship #Marine #AdonisBlue #Conservation

Our "Shoresearchers" found out so much about marine life on Kent’s coast in 2024! Discoveries made thanks to #Shoresearch citizen scientists include: Over 160 species recorded, including stalked jellyfish and white hedgehog sea slugs. Invasive Pacific oysters found at 7/9 sites. 150 volunteers gave 369+ hours to protect our coast. We even held a special “Seaweed Day” to celebrate the vital role of seaweed. • As our interns conclude their six-month placements, we wish to highlight their individual research projects and the aspects of the experience they found most rewarding. Emmie Bowlt's final project, titled "Evaluation of Dark-Bellied Brent Geese Population Trends along the North Kent and Essex Coastline, and their Potential Application as Environmental Indicators," give an initial compelling insight into the subject matter. 🪿 Her primary findings revealed that 8 out of 10 sites within the study area exhibited a declining trend in relative population change from 1992 to 2022, indicating a long-term decrease. Conversely, over the past five years, 7 out of 10 sites have shown stable or increasing trends in relative population changes. These findings, along with preliminary evaluations of the relationship between Dark-Bellied Brent Geese and the saltmarsh and seagrass habitats they depend on, suggest that this species may serve as a valuable environmental indicator. This could be particularly beneficial for restoration projects, as the presence of Dark-Bellied Brent Geese could help identify priority areas for restoration and enhancement. Favorite Aspect: "My favorite part was Shoresearch; it was incredibly diverse! I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the Kent coastline and its various habitats, and it was equally rewarding to learn from my colleagues at ABEC and local experts. Additionally, we had the chance to organize our own Shoresearch sessions, which provided an excellent opportunity to develop project management, identification skills, and data processing abilities." Our other intern, Linn Wiberg will be highlighted in next week's post. #Internship #Marine #Ecology #AdonisBlue

For the last 2 years I have had the privilege of line managing our Coast Explorer Interns. This year we welcomed Emmie Bowlt and Linn Wiberg to the team. Six months later, after much hard work, learning and exploration, Emmie and Linn presented the findings of their main projects to the rest of the team at Adonis Blue Environmental this week. One study on dark-bellied brent geese distribution across South-East England, and another on seal and fisheries interactions in Kent. What an absolute pleasure watching these projects grow and bloom into work which we will definitely be taking forward in the new year. Congratulations Emmie and Linn, your next employers are very lucky to have such hard working and enthusiastic people on their team! You will be missed at ABEC! And of course a huge thank you to The Crown Estate for funding such fantastic internships for early career professionals.
