Extending mobile network operators' coverage deep into rural areas

About us

Extending mobile phone operators coverage deep into rural Africa Many African countries have good mobile network coverage in the towns and cities, but in not the rural areas - and the population coverage falls well short of the maximum that is economically viable. This is due to limitations on the availability of affordable capital, with Operators forced to prioritise their precious capex on technology upgrades and coverage improvements in the high-population-density cities, rather than invest in expanding coverage into the rural areas. AMN offers Operators across Africa a simple and compelling solution - expanded coverage, more subscribers, increased revenues, guaranteed positive margins and no capex. Africa currently has 170,000 towers - and needs at least 60,000 more. AMN plans to build approximately 5,000 towers over the next 3 years.

  • Just over two weeks ago, we shared pictures of the AMN team in DRC as they left our warehouse to install new sites. They left with a very ambitious target, to install 60 sites within two weeks. They had to contend with the end of rainy season, extremely difficult road conditions, and transport by boat for many locations (if you missed our video of the team clearing a path within the river, be sure to take a look!). Despite all of the challenges, we are happy to report that we now have an additional 70 sites installed in DRC. These photos were taken in some of the communities that now have access to a mobile network for the first time. We are in awe of the gargantuan effort the team has displayed over the last few weeks, and it is representative of the effort we see year-round. Well done, AMN DRC! We will continue to share videos over the coming weeks, so stay tuned... #DRC #rural #telecom #satellite #mobilenetwork #towers #Congo #Africa

  • The journey is tough... but not as tough as the AMN team in DRC. We're on our way to install towers in DRC, and nothing will stop our team from reaching the village. We can't say it better than the team in the video. "We brave it all to allow people in the deep Congo to have network, to finally be opened up. That is our work. Congo will always win." #rural #Africa #telecom #DRC #Congo #mobilenetwork #satellite #village

What does ubiquity really mean? Our rural solution is ubiquitous. Our sites are 100% solar powered and use satellite backhaul to provide high quality, dependable connectivity anywhere in the world. Ubiquity is key to what we do, but nothing shows the true meaning of a 'ubiquitous solution' like this video of the team in DRC on their way to build a site. If you are truly building sites anywhere and everywhere, the journey sometimes looks like this. Yesterday we shared the team in DRC at our offices in Kinshasa, and today we see them navigating the jungle. We're in awe of the work our teams do on a daily basis, and we hope you enjoy following their journey with us! #DRC #mobilenetwork #satelite #telecoms #rural #Africa #ubiquity

Our team in DRC is ready to leave Kinshasa to roll out new sites. They are targeting 60 new sites by mid-December, which is an astonishing number of sites in extremely tough conditions. That's 60 communities that will have access to telecommunication services for the very first time. We currently operate more than 700 mobile network base stations in DRC, providing connectivity to 4 million people. Over the next couple of weeks we will be sharing more photos and videos from the field, so be sure to follow to see the rollout in DRC and the impact of connectivity on the communities we plan to connect. Good luck team AMN DRC! #DRC #mobilenetwork #satelite #telecoms #rural #Africa

  • Yesterday we shared the boat journey taken by the AMN Congo team to reach a rural village and we thought you might like to see what came next! The team travelled for four days to extend rural coverage into this village, located near Congo River. More than 1500 people live here, but until today, they had no access to any mobile network services. Yesterday we shared the 'how', and today you see the 'why'! The mobile connectivity AMN provides changes lives. Farmers can find information about market prices, a healthcare provider can consult with doctors in a larger town, money can be sent safely and securely into the village, and businesses can expand beyond their own community. Our team will spend only a few hours in this village building and commissioning the site before start their journey to the next location later today. The AMN teams in Congo have now built 180 rural base stations, offering mobile connectivity to approximately 300,000 previously unconnected people. #congo #ruralconnectivity #Africa #satellite #telecommunications #mobilenetwork

"Unstoppable AMN" We use this phrase a lot at AMN, and this video from the team in Congo shows exactly what we mean. The AMN Congo teams are currently transporting site equipment to a location that is inaccessible by road. For many this would prevent deployment, but not for AMN. We specialise in extending network coverage where others are unable to do so. This team is transporting a full set of site equipment by boat to bring network connectivity to a currently unconnected village in Congo. From steel to active components, the engineers transport the equipment from our warehouse to the rural village. For some deployments, it can take days to reach the final location using multiple methods of transport. Our teams share photos and videos of their time in the field, and it's clear that "unstoppable AMN" isn't just a phrase, it's a core value. It's used as a congratulations from colleagues, encouragement during difficult deployments, and a way to show pride in a job well done. #AMN #rural #Congo #Brazzaville #ruralconnectivity #Africa #satellite #telecommunications

In this video, Mboussa Elion tells us about the impact of the AMN tower in Akana, Congo Brazaville. Before AMN built a tower in the village, Mboussa Elion struggled to use the very poor signal in the village. Despite being largely unusable, Akana was considered to have service. For a long time, the solution to providing coverage to ultra-rural villages has been to build a macro tower to serve four or five communities. In the beginning, AMN had the same idea. But during a site visit, we noticed that we were providing the best service to the empty space between the villages and the tower. No airtime reseller, no matter how good of a salesman, can sell airtime to a snake! At AMN, we believe that everybody should have access to high-quality, usable mobile network coverage, so we designed the low-cost 12m monopole tower. This tower has been designed with the rural and ultra-rural application in mind and the small footprint means we can install it at the heart of the community where it can provide excellent service to everyone. Now, Mboussa Elion can receive calls no matter where he is in the village. He no longer needs to find a specific spot to make a call. He can reach out to family in the cities, and he can expand his business outside of Akana. AMN Congo has built 180 towers in communities just like Akana. In total, AMN has built 4,400 towers, providing high-quality services to more than 12.5 million people. #congo #brazzaville #rural #connectivity #satellite #mobilenetwork #Africa #digitaldivide

AMN Liberia recently shared this video with us, and we think it shows the impact of rural telephony perfectly. This village had no exising access to telecommunication services, and the excitement at the prospect of being able to connect with people outside the village is palpable. AMN builds towers in areas with no existing coverage, and we have spent a lot of time talking to community members about what network coverage means to them. One person explained that many of the younger generation will leave the village for opportunities in larger towns and cities. With limited or difficult road infrastructure, this can mean long periods of time (even years) without seeing those who have left. Families relied on sporadic word-of-mouth updates to confirm that their loved ones were well, but now that confirmation is only a phone call away. We now operate more than 360 sites in Liberia, providing network coverage to more than one million people. Thank you to the AMN Liberia team for all your hard work. #Liberia #ruralconnectivity #Africa #satellite #telecommunications
