Improving efficiencies in 3D scene generation is imperative for driving and other simulation disciplines, as it has the potential to reduce timelines, effort, and cost. It was a hot topic on everyone's lips at the recent DSC 2024 and IPG Open House driving simulation events we exhibited at. This is a technique we've been using in Rail for some time and our attention is now fimly in the automotive space. If you're building a driving or other simulator environment, and you need stunning realism, it takes a lot of time and effort. You can, for example, use a generic environment and manually customise it for each scenario using simulation tools, and objects from a generic library. This might get you close, but will take considerable time and will never be perfect. Another - even more manual - option is to ask a 3D modelling team to create the visual scene necessary. This could achieve exactly what you need but will take even longer – not practical when the number of test scenarios is very large. Could procedural scene generation provide the solution you need? What can road learn from rail? When it comes to 3D scenarios for simulation, quite a lot! 'Procedural scene generation' is the key phrase here: the ability to automatically create complex, dynamic 3D scenarios for simulation and testing, without building them from scratch every time. Earlier this week, David Turner from Agility3 visited Virtuocity and the Leeds Driving Simulation Centre at University of Leeds, where he met with Dr. Albert Solernou Crusat, who oversees their state-of-the-art simulator facilities. David had the opportunity to see the progress on their Driving Simulator upgrade and explore their Highly Immersive Kinematic Experimental Research (HIKER) pedestrian lab - an incredible setup! We were proud to see that the Truck Simulator, for which Agility3 developed the 3D environment back in 2017, is still looking fantastic today, which is a true testament to the quality of our work. And, beyond reflecting on past successes, this visit was an exciting chance to discuss future collaboration opportunities, particularly in support of ongoing autonomous vehicle research.
